The maintenance guy’s name is Wilson. We have talked to him the last few visits. He opens and closes the mall. Very nice man, he said he still has not heard about the mall closing or redevelopment… it’s all sad. Thanks for sharing these memories.
I feel sorry Wilson works in that environment. The mold in that place is bad.
Wilson is the ginger guy right?
@@CableWatson I was thinking the same myself 👍. Skinny redheaded white guy.
So much nostalgia for malls! He’s on ☄️ fire sad that malls have gone away. Even food courts were so cool back then. Wow Woolworth is real old 🎉
They have been talks for years about building a new shopping center for my old town. But they need to remove the old Signal Hill mall first. Who ever is in charge just let's the mall set there and rot. So sad for the community.
Man. I remember when JR’s was new. They had all kinds of stuff in there. We’re from Mooresville, but our friends took us to El Tio’s. That was THE Mexican restaurant in Statesville. I can’t believe the put put is completely unrecognizable. So sad. I also remember in front of JC Penny, they would set up a stage with local talent, beauty pageants, you name it.
Hey Tim. Thanks for sharing some of your memories. It is sad that the town has let the Signal Hill Mall area rot away. Thanks for watching my friend.
Great video. Grew up going to the Chick-fil-A in there as one of my brothers used to work there 20 years ago. Miss that mail
And then now 20 years later he is still with CFA and has started a lot of us in my family to be with CFA too
Hey Phillip! Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories. Have good day.
Did he work for Jimmy, aka manager of CFA way back when?@@phillipwall6519
That store beside the Radio Shack looks like an old Hickory Farms storefront
I have a friend that worked next door in Belk years ago. I will ask him if that was a Hickory Farms at one time. Thanks for watching.
It was Spainhours I shopped there religiously. It was a top of the line store.
Thanks for watching and have a blessed day.
Great video, brings back a lot of memories. I spent a lot of time in that mall during the mid 80's. I use to work part-time helping take out trash and making change at the Playhouse in exchange for free play on the machines. After the mall closed in the evening, I spent hours cruising and hanging out around Newtown. It's hard to believe it has turned into this.
Hey David! The last few years I have made videos about the mall and Newtown shopping area. Each time I visit the area I treat it as it might be the last time I see it. Have a lot of good memories growing up in this area too. Thanks for watching friend.
Great Video!!! This is definitely sad... I had great memories there.
It is a sad thing to see. I had so many great memories in that mall growing up. Thanks for watching Tirrellx!
We went to check this mall out today and it was completely closed :( was a bummer. I had never been
I sorry to hear that Nic. Better luck on your next adventure my friend.
I think it’s closed permanently now. There’s someone else with a video from Dec 2023. That’s the latest video I’ve seen and the mall was in absolutely horrendous condition. I cannot understand how people were still allowed in. Very sad to see the state of the mall, I remember it in the 90’s.
Thanks for your video. I was hoping to film this one before they suddenly closed.
I stopped by the Signal Hill Mall last week to make an update video. A friend of mine told me a section of the ceiling collapsed during heavy rains that battered the area before Christmas. I guess that is why the owners finally closed the doors. Sorry you missed out on filming. Best of luck to you in your future. Thanks for watching friend.
@@HitchHikingYeti what’s a shame is the owners let it get that bad to begin with for sure. I am trying to line up so other interesting NC malls soon :)
@@DyingRetail I did a walk through video at the Salisbury Mall in 2022. It was mostly abandoned. But, the mall was in good shape. That was a few years ago. I not sure what condition the Salisbury Mall is in now.
Oh man! I can’t believe someone ripped the wood off the door at the cinema… damn, I wanna see inside!
Also… question… to the left of the furniture store, what was the two story bar or restaurant? It’s closed now and all nasty, the place that’s all dark wood.
Yes, the Chinese place is still open! When we walked past, I was in amazement it was still open.
If you walk down where that guy was sleeping, the door to the old “corporate office” for village inn pizza is there 🍕 and the sign is still up!
The restaurant next to the furniture was Gluttons. It was a nice place to eat. They had a good steak at one time. It was semifancy.lol
Loved Gluttons myself 👍@@HitchHikingYeti
Chinese place is the Dragon Palace. Run down building but last time I ate there the food was still good. 6 to 8 years ago at least.
I’ve been visiting here for the last few years and posting updates. The interior has been getting worse and worse with mold. I don’t understand how it is actually allowed to remain open. In my opinion it is not safe for human occupancy.
I agree 100 percent. The mold and smell is horrible. Hopefully they will put that place out of its misery soon. They could build something more modern. People would shop there again if they had stores.
Cant believe this is open in this condition think it has since closed you know they gave up when didnt ever update map anymore of mall
Hey Robert! I stopped by the mall a few weeks ago. They did finally close it. I was told because of the heavy amounts of rain the area sustained before Christmas. The ceiling started to cave. Hopefully now someone will start a new development project. The people of Statesville deserve better. Thanks for watching. Have a good day.👍
Belk putting up a wall might help, but the mold will eventually get into their store through the ceiling. They need to just move out of there. They are exposing their employees and customers to mold every day.
Good point. Mold will travel in the ceiling to Belk. The wall they constructed will not stop black mold. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Have a good day friend.
I heard that everything from the Brookwood inn to the mall will be all torn down in a couple of years and I heard they are going to try to make it like a Birkdale Village in Huntersville NC. I hope that is the plan, the whole place from the motel to mall is become an eye sore.
That sounds like a good plan. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out in the coming years. Thanks for watching my friend.
Toxic
That is a good one word to describe that place.
Northgate Mall pretty much imploded as soon as Covid hit. I grew up in this mall and it was 1 of 3 in the RDU area while growing up. South Square Mall went away in the late 90’s and now Northgate is gone 😔
Sadly enough malls seem to be a thing of the past. Thanks for watching and sharing your some information about your local malls. Have a good day friend.
I really miss Northgate mall so many good memories
21:53 did you notice the double drop ceiling? So bizarre, I’ve seen that a couple of times i don’t understand why places do that
My guess is it had something to do with lighting design. I think drop ceiling are normally created to hide utilities. Also it can improve acoustics and ventilation. Have a good day friend. Thanks for watching!
