Thank you for mentioning the herbicide that will target it but not kill the grass. Up until now, I thought gly was the only way. We have a lot of Johnson grass and I'm worried about the cyanide it can make when its stressed with our goats and sheep eating it. Is this that big of an issue to where I should keep livestock off it?
Good mention of Outrider - it is very effective early in summer. Worth noting that Johnson grass is an Asian sorghum; in the western hemisphere it has repeatedly crossed with introduced African sorghums to become a superweed.
That mess has started to take over my back yard! Because it's growing right in my garden area, I have to be CAREFUL. I have poured boiling water- it laughed! Didn't even wilt it. Saturated the ground with the strongest vinegar on the market..It didn't even cough. The ONLY thing that has worked, and we started 3 test areas, is BLUE tarps. Why blue? I don't know. We put down silage tarps, clear plastic, and the ACE hardware blue tarps. It took about 3 months, But, the clear plastic, merely wilted the grass, but it come right out from under it, and continued to spread, so solarization didn't work. The black silage tarp, the same. Just wilted it. As a matter of fact, I think those both encouraged it to spread. But, the blue tarps, it actually died. It turned brown, and became crumbly, and so far, has not returned anywhere the tarp was. Now, to buy 50 tarps to cover half my fence which it seems to enjoy growing. ( BTW- we put the plastic down in August, and today it's still in place, and still alive under that plastic.)
If u have small amount u can pull and keep it under r control and get rid of it all , but like said if large areas u have to spray, and kill for decades because the seeds are already in the ground
