    In this video we will show you how to remove or replace the rear shocks struts on Dodge Journey / Fiat Freemont. In Europe Fiat Freemont is actually Dodge Journey and that is why it should be the same procedure. We will demonstrated how to replace the rear shocks struts on a 2012 Dodge Journey but it should be the same for the whole generation.

    I referenced this very informative video before replacing my own rear shock/struts two days ago. It is very time consuming and somewhat stressful because you are constantly worried about breaking something plastic, and i don't mess around near air bags.......
    I was able to remove both the large (black panels) panels from the car without unbolting the upper seat belt anchors or any of the upper (light tan panels) plastic panels. No need to mess around near airbags!
    Just be patient and go slow with interior pieces . Taking the car apart and interior re-assembly takes longer than replacing the shocks/struts...
    Between careful dis-assembly, cleaning interior, doing the shock/struts, re-assembly of interior (very carefully), then a final wipe down, this took me about three hours to do.......hope this helps!

    great step by step video! no useless chitter chatter or music like so many other people who blabber for nothing and try to be funny...you get right to the point!...I was going to change the struts tonight after work, but now that I see how stupidly this van is made (how ridicoulous that there is no access door for the strut bolts!!)..you just saved me a whole lot of trouble as I'ts going to take me a lot longer than I thought...so I'll save the job for the weekend instead of being up until midnight tonight!.. Thanks!

    remove the rear seat that covers the plastic in front of the strut nut location and just cut the plastic side panel enough to get to the nuts and then patch up with some gorilla tape to hold the plastic panel back to gather then reinstall the rear seat and you will NEVER see what has been done, also save from removing all the panels and creating creaks and noise from loose plastic parts that never go back together again like they should....LOL

    Professional Mechanic. I always recommend springs. Springs fatigued just like struts. So now the new shock is doing part of the spring work. Shock has premature failure due to trying to hold up body weight that is the springs job

    Thank you for this video. About to do this job tomorrow. I always laugh when the domestic car makers wonder why their market is shrinking. Turns out that at least in the 2012 models there is a cut-out built into the panel in front of the bolts (for the two seat model but not the 3 row seat model); that can be cut out to fold out of the way to remove the nuts.

New battery, alternator, brakes all around, new tires, need a windshield, need rear struts replaced and rear control arms. Likely have to put into it in repairs about $2500 cad. Not sure if it’s worthwhile. I will stick with Toyota going forward.

    You can back out the seat belt out the seat seat belt anchors a little but not off completely to give you a little room to pull those plastic covers down and out'. You don't have to mess with the white plastic pieces at all. Leave that stuff alone and don't disconnect the fan motor electrical OR remove the AC breather, it's bad enough as it is, it's a 5 to 6 hr. job by your self. Great car, unbelievable to have to work on.

    Would a bad strut cause extreme squeaking?

      Probably bushings, but it could be something like the bearing plates on the strut.

    The socket got stuck because the chrome caps are swollen. No need to clean the hub either, just use anti-seize for easy removal later down the road. If you chose to clean the hub, use a die grinder, not sandpaper. Really makes no sense in using only shallow sockets when deep sockets are a must for this type of job. You know you can use socket extensions on impact drivers. Also, most mechanics would use magnetic trays to hold all the bolts in so they don't get lost. Making it more difficult than what it should be by attempting to remove interior panels that you don't really need to remove. A better way to prevent damage to the CV axle is to hold the wheel hub assembly up with a jack. There are other alternative tools to use other than a screwdriver to push a bolt out, which can damage the tip of the screwdriver, like a punch.

    This video is very incorrect. I replaced the rear struts of my mother-in-laws 2009 Dodge Journey this weekend and the interior panels do NOT need to be removed. There is a large plastic tub in the rear of the car. It is held in with 4 nuts. Remove those and the tub come out. When that is out, you will see hatches on each side of the car. Those hatches are partially cut on the sides. Use a utility knife to cut the remaining small plastic tabs that keep the hatches closed. The hatches will not fold up allowing access to the strut bolts. You can use a closed end ratcheting wrench to loosen the nuts. through here. There is some foam insulation in the way so I cut it out of the opening with a utility knife.

      I'll be doing this job on my GF's 2011 this weekend, so I'll let you know if I can do it like you say, cause I don't exactly understand what you mean by "a large plastic tub in the rear of the car held with 4 nuts".... I guess I'll see when I get to it...

      I believe models with a 3rd row rear seat do not have the "hatches". Models without a 3rd row rear seat do.

    • @MaddMaxx2012
      @MaddMaxx2012 Před 5 lety +6

      My GF's DOES NOT have any hatches. It was EXACTLY as the video described....and yes it is a three row seat model so maybe there is a difference between models, but Mine was like this and it was a pain in the ass to do...I can't believe they wouldn't have access doors to be able to get to these bolts...Shame on you Dodge! it would have turned this 4 hour job into a 1/2 hour job!
