Shinobido: Way of the Ninja - My Garden

  • I finally got around to make a video showcasing my garden. Just read the subtitles for my garden's description and the reasons for constructing the garden that way.
    I used the game's widescreen option this time, so it was easier to follow the actions of the barbarians.
    Recently there have been some good news about the Shinobido franchise. Famitsu polled their readers for the most wanted sequels of all time. (Read here: kotaku.com/5238574/ ) Shinobido ranked at 11! This is pretty great considering which games were placed behind it (Some notable SquareEnix games). Famitsu also contacted the publishers for their comment on the poll. Sadly I couldn't find a translation of Spike's comment. It would be interesting if they said "We still don't give a ish" or the more positive "We have to reconsider our position on Shinobido".
    Anyway please leave your comments and if you happen to live in Japan and don't want to see Shinobido go the way of the Dodo, let Spike know of the recent Famitsu survey!

    PS2 use to have so much good games that I can't get enough of. These days the games has great graphics but they don't have great gameplay or plot/story as these games. These are golden age of gaming, if you game for story and gameplay at that age, damn it was an exciting experience.

    "Shinobido Way of the Ninja" for the PS2 is the 1st game in the Shinobido series, which has a story mode that leads to an infinite number of missions with unique maps, cutscenes & the garden & a mission editor + 40 custom missions. Then there's "Shinobido Tales of the Ninja" for the PSP that only has 80 custom missions made with the mission editor from the 1st game with a little (forgettable) story wrapped around it.
    Another PS2 game is the Japan-only Takumi that features ~130 fan-made missions.

    Wow this game is still one of my favorite!! Your garden's defense is way perfect! However I wouldn't like a garden like that since I prefer a garden a bit more "realistic" you know with trees, decoration, and so on, and also bcuz I like killing barbarians by myself hahaha, but I include good defense anyway.

    As you progress through the Story, more items come available in the shop menu, Scroll aaallll the way to the bottom and check what is in stock, basically after any important events including Fighting Zaji, The Twins or Hebitumbo or Kabuto, that mean you are moving through the story, after any of the fights or after finding a soul fragment, Take a peek in the shop, thats the best way i can explain :) They cost a wopping 4000 or something so make sure you have some cash :)

    Pretty good Garden, Good defenses.. The Canons Places on the Ground and up high are always my favorite choice, as well as lowering the Ground so the Hideout is high and hard to reach. But the way you placed a Tower sort of layout in the middle is Really good i usually focus around the Hideout only on my game.. Spikes and Fire Traps always go to good use when placed well, Im gunna try this layout for my self :) Awesome job!

    I don't think that the graphics and controls are perfect, but aside from that I agree with you, it's definitely the best ninja game ever made and a overlooked masterpiece, despite being rough around the edges. I still have to play the sequel however (but that seemed to have removed so much that I probably wouldn't rate it higher than the first game).

    honestly, sekiro was such an amazing game but it lacked so many things!!
    interactions, other modes and consequences.
    actual optional paths that lead to a different game ending.
    shinobido allowed you to intract with the bodies, pick items in the enviroment and use it, make your own items, choose a lord or person your on the team with, enemies interaction changes depending on the missions etc.
    so many great points but sadly, sekiro for me was only partly enjoyable for its nostalia for tenchu and shinobido.
    there needs to be more of these amazing games like tenchu and shinobido in this age 😥

    @oblivi0ndoll I usually alternate between hard and very hard, but tend to play more on hard because fighting Gamuran in the end with the very hard setting is such a yawning endurance test.
    My garden has only two beneficial traps located on the top of my tower, which only 1 out of 20 invaders seems to reach, non of them being barbarians. Maybe the curiosity what the traps on the tower do, leads the barbarians to walk into the deadly traps instead along the row of cannonball traps.

  • @NameThatNobodyTakes
    @NameThatNobodyTakes  Před 12 lety

    @oblivi0ndoll I know that in one Onji letter it says that invaders will change their tactics, but it somehow never happened to me and therefore I didn't care, just like the random letters you get that tell you nothing. This definitely gives the garden a bigger dimension than I thought it had.
    Would be interesting to know what causes this, I think I need to experiment a little with my garden map next time.

  • @NameThatNobodyTakes
    @NameThatNobodyTakes  Před 12 lety

    @oblivi0ndoll The barbarians have seen the layout now dozens of times on multiple playthroughs and they still react the exact same way as shown on the video, no matter which difficulty I choose.

    as for me: i just sank my hut into the ground (like the one guy here on youtube) for the barbarians to fall into their death and simply have a tower one one end of the field surrounded with traps.
    the rest of my garden is more like: feng shui meets a soccer stadium (some wooden stairs as tribunes, lakes - a real eyecatcher :D

  • @NameThatNobodyTakes
    @NameThatNobodyTakes  Před 15 lety

    I already thought "aren't you talking about my video?", hehe.
    The garden portrayed here is my standard garden. I also would like use the sunk hovel more often, but it's such a pain to change it back to its regular setting. But it actually doesn't matter because 99% ot the time barbarians don't make it past the tower anyway...
    Your garden does sound interesting - i like nice looking ones, for example the one by ShinAkuma200X, it's like a castle/fortress.

    @99042111 I share your thoughts on that matter. I don't see a lot of a reason to play a game if it doesn't challenge me on the first playthrough. Additionally I think the hardest difficulty setting actually forces you to learn a game's mechanics properly instead on easy difficulties where you can make the same mistakes repeatedly without really being punished for it.

    i don't know how this is working, in my game w.e i do the barbarians will zig zag between all my defenses and if i put canons the go from the square around the garden that can't e edited... it's still easy to kill them but eh i worked so hard on so many different trap variations...

    • @NameThatNobodyTakes
      @NameThatNobodyTakes  Před 5 lety

      I believe the trick is to place traps in such a way that when barbarians walk around a particular trap, they will be forced to walk into another.
      As for barbarians walking on the uneditable walkways on the side - I'm not sure what triggers this behavior but I think there needs to be something which catches their attention on the editable field to lure them away from said walkways. Maybe guards etc may do the trick. However I don't remember fully what actually causes them to walk on the field.

  • @adeliayuliarni7411
    @adeliayuliarni7411 Před 10 lety

    My garden has the same strategy as yours, I mean the 'guards' part as your last defense.. But every sound that barbarian or enemy also the canon's explosion made, it will alert the guards and it will make them go to the sound source, of course they will find the enemies but the problem is they also get into the traps, so they died quickly, and that also annoying cause that's mean they're useless as my last defense.. But, in your video I didn't see them around, so, I assume that they stay in their place... So.... How can that be?? Anyway it's a good idea about the 'fire hole' thanks, and I like your garden... Please reply, I really curious...

    • @NameThatNobodyTakes
      @NameThatNobodyTakes  Před 9 lety

      I also realized that the guards are pointless as hell if you decide to have a garden that includes a lot of traps (the AI in this game really could be a teeny bit better).
      Now the reason that you didn't see the guards in the video, hmm, I really don't know. It could most likely be that I removed them - I'm pretty sure that the garden editor part and the part where I actually showcase how the garden works were recorded during separate playing sessions, which means that I could have removed the guards (however this is a purely hypothetical thought as I made that video five years ago).
      It wasn't my intent to give someone the perception that I found a way how to make guards ignore explosions etc., but anyway you made a good observation!
      The fire hole is still the best way to get rid of ninjas attacking your garden and is possibly the best idea in my garden design, I highly recommended it.
      And sorry for my late response, I don't think that I ever received a notification.

      You mean changing the altitude of the floor? As far as I remember, square lowers the floor and X raises it (if those buttons are wrong look at the button prompts at the lower right of the screen. I'm pretty sure that another of my videos shows how I lower the floor, I believe it's "Pandora's box"). You have to take into account that there's a cap on how much you can lower/raise the floor on a first playthrough.

      You are correct that you receive far more placement memory if you lower the floor to its bottom limit. All the different traps can be unlocked during the main game for either aligning yourself with a specific faction for most of the game (or just making sure that the other factions don't realize that you are a snitch) or beating the game. However don't ask me how to get them exactly because I forgot it and the only way for me to know would be to play the game again on a fresh save file.
      I really should make an FAQ for this game some time in the future.

      "secret move or word of this game" - I don't think I understand what you're asking me. Well as for moves in the game, attacking combos that is, they work similar like in Devil May Cry 2 where you need to move the analog stick in the direction of your target at a specific period during the combo for example like moving the analog stick after the first/second or third sword slash will change the combo, but don't ask me for the exact details as it has been *years* since I've played the game.
