I work at LCE in Guildford, a few of us are big fans of yours and fuji shooters. You should have popped in and said hello!😂👍
Great take on a great lens. I prefer the slightly wider length over the new 18/1.4, I love how close it gets, I love the character wide open, and that it smartens up when I stop it down. Wide enough for 90% of my landscape needs, tight enough I can get unique shots by getting close and playing into the distortion. It's just an awesome lens. I briefly had the 2.8 and just never got along with it. The corners get way too soft with how much software correction it needs to straighten things out. The 16-23-33-56 prime quad-combo is where I've settled at, usually picking two for the outing.
One big plus factor for this lens (and the 23mm f/1.4) is the manual focus clutch. Pull it back and it reveals a DOF scale and marked distances allowing zone and hyper focuses to be set... perfect with a wide angle.
I have both this and the f/2.8, love both but for really serious work, the f/1.4 gets used. The results make the extra weight worth the effort to lug it.
Also, IMO... the Fujifilm square hood is a must. The supplied petal hood is too big and not too sturdy.
Awesome video review!
This is easily my favorite lens.
Loved the walking around part of the video.
Curious if there would be any film simulations to approximate your lightroom preset? Really liked the balanced contrast for the monochrome look. I usually shoot raw+jpeg with my film simulations, and only edit the raw in Capture One in case the jpegs didn't please me.
Close focus is also a big plus for this lens, not just the 1.4. That being said I am half thinking about trading it for the new 18. When I bought it, I was shooting different subject. Currently distortion does play well with the work I am doing, but I still like wide angle.
The 18mm is awesome too, but both lenses have different strengths. I tried both a bit in a shop, and like the 16mm quite a bit better. The 18mm has less distortion, is sharper and the autofocus is a bit better. But I like the 16 being wider, I use the closefocus a lot, and I like the distortion :) I had great results with it shooting candids from really close. Makes the pictures look like you were there :)
Good video!!! What lense were you using for the video? 18-55?? Any grading on that part or film simulation? For a non gimbal setup the movement it is great.
Hey Great review! I got this lens this summer, and it already is my favorite lens. It's awesome for travel: it's weathersealed, so you can take it everywhere. You can get insanely close for close-ups and it's really wide for capturing a whole scene. And with the 1.4 you are good when it's dark as well. So if I can bring only one lens: It's usually this one. For my usecase it even beats the new 18mm, because I can get wider and closer. (and I don't need the faster autofocus and increased resolution that often)
I never use it below 2.8 for streetphotography. For astrophotography I put f1.8 to 2,2. 1.4 is only used at night indoor photography or close up bokeh shots. F8 for landscapes. But I still prefer the 18mmf2 for daily use.
Also, the images you show in the vid, are they cropped in any way?
Would you please share your film simulation recipe that you were using?
if I could have only one lens for the rest of my days - this is it. I love its versatility, unique IQ and the manual focus clutch.
how does it compare vs the new 18mm 1.4?
My favourite lens for street is the 35mm (ff equivalent) but in the last year or so I've been using the 24mm as well which adds a lot of perspective and structure especially in big cities. Now I use the 16mm f2.8 because of its size but the 23mm f1.4 is much better. Cheers!
Good review Chris. It appeared that climping that hill was a workout. What I have often herd about this lens is that it has an amazing close focusing distance.
Say hi to Lee from Andertons in Gilford
Finally my dream amazing lens review is done!!
Thank you sir for answering all of my request here in your channel.
I really appreciate your kind concern for your viewers in this great CZcams channel.
God bless you and to all of your family ~
Glad I could help! 😊
You sound as excited as I was when I first got this lens 5 years ago. Still my favorite Fuji lens and I have a lot of lenses.
That is a super lens, way better than the 2,8, even though the 2,8 is not a bad lens.
It is a great lens, but I prefer the F2.8 for my street photography. It's not as heavy and I'm never going to shoot at F2.8 let alone F1.4...
Every lens is a compromise, the new 18mm f1.4 replaced my go to lenses the 16mm and 23mm f1.4's for events, as well as better IQ the faster - confident AF was the deal breaker especially in low light. I've kept the 16mm f1.4 for i'st close focusing capability's. but like camera body's everything comes down to use case.
It's a shame you didn't shoot more people with it. I do zero landscape or scenery or movies, but if I did I would just get the cheapie 2.8 and shoot it all day on F8 or something. However the whole purpose of this lens is to shoot people, and really, really close. I get in really close, always shoot at 1.4 and it kind of exaggerates their features (for rough people in the streets, workman etc it's great), but it also has the power to blur the background. It's the best win/win on the planet - wide enough to get the subject plus all the background, but focusing close enough to be able to isolate them from the background. I love this lens and as I said on one of your other videos, the whole reason I stay locked into Fuji. My other camera is FF, but I won't leave Fuji solely because of this beautiful lens.
I like the review but my vertigo was triggered by all yah camera movements. ;-)
Personally this lense isn´t my first choice for street, just a little too wide.
First.
