  • Joey Hood, United States Consul General to the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, talks about how everything we think we know about diplomats is wrong.
    Joey Hood, US Consul General in Dhahran, has served in numerous positions in many places across the world, including the States, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, Yemen, Qatar. In the past he has helped establish the first sustained dialogue between the US and Iran in 30 years, apprised Washington of Eritrea's human rights abuses, and help establish the US-Qatari sister school program.

    We've been on the road for almost 40 years, first with the military then embassy duty and now a defense company. Our 2 children were born on the road (Botswana and Hawaii).

      This is sad. I have been in the same situation and frankly, I would suggest that you analyse your week completely on Sunday morning and think really hard: what part of the weekend did you really enjoy such that you were both being educated and productive doing it (it may be unintentional). If you can do this then I guarantee that you have taken the first step to success. If not then go on a 2-3 week hiatus from work, do anything sit in your home watch CZcams all day (what I did), go camping the mountains, live out of a trailer park, board a flight to some place and so on. Just stop giving priority to work and study for 2-3 weeks (you know you can do it if you have time to watch TEDx video). After the hiatus come back and ask yourself the same question I have mentioned above and you will find the answer. I am an Engineer pursuing my bachelor's in computer science and the day I realised I am interested in Foreign Relations, I wanted to be centrally involved in its intricacies. I enjoy my preparation every bit for it when I prepare for a life deciding task of becoming a Diplomat. It is not always rainbows and sunshine but the day you realise you genuinely want to do XYZ thing for 30+ years of your life, something wakes up inside you. This something is ready to wake early, work extra hours, meet new people, show everyone how great he/she is. It's great. Really.

    I'm very interested in becoming a diplomat aka FSO. But I'm confused why they continually move and switch diplomats around every 2 years or so. Wouldn't it be ideal to keep a diplomat in one place as they'd get the language, culture , city and government down and be more effective with time? Moving them just as they get good with the area seems counterproductive

This test is very hard etc.. All found on the first website after you Google the word foreign service. Then you continue and do extensive research on Google or other sources. And you call me a dumb ass lol my friend this is how stupid you are.

    • @js-hk6xs
      @js-hk6xs Před 7 lety

      Justin Ngome Paul again as I stated you question was exactly how does the foreign selection process work. This question is easily answered by Googling . The first site tells you have to take a test. It lays the process out for you. Yes of course you need a Profesional network connections are important in any field. But that's not what we're talking about. You question was exactly this how does the foreign selection process work. And the answer is easily answered by Googling. I'm just surprised how dumb you are doing everything to avoid what I'm saying and yes I'm American if that concerns that much. But that's not what iam here to discuss. It's that you asked a question that you can literally Google I'm trying to fix you brain apparently you can't type into Google and do research. As part of my life it is to educate the young men and shape them to be smart individuals for the future. You can't even Google so you have a long way to go trying to help not be a ass hole but you question is literally how does the selection process work did you brain not work to google the position like really.

      @@rookiej5587 truthfully,I was only with the State Department for 3 years. While serving in the military, I along with any member of the Armed Services working at an Embassy or consulate of the US is taken under the wing of the State Department. There are many ways to get involved with diplomatic work. The best is probably by graduating college and going on to the federal government web site for hiring. Different office s and departments have different websites of course. I suppose browsing through their sites and looking at career opportunities there may give you an idea of what you are looking for. The other option is to join one of the branches of military and try to get an MOS/job that would take you to the foreign service. This is the most difficult since there are a limited number of openings for Military Personnel. As far as you being an introvert, well, there are many jobs in the State Department and most require interacting with others, but if this is where you wish to be, you may have to adapt a bit. It’s no big deal being shy, in many situations we can adapt without giving up our personal space. Keep your chin up, don’t change for others sake just adapt to the situation, and do what you believe is best for your happiness and well being. Good Luck.

    I don't understand why you're talking about glamor... Anyone worth any amount of salt knows that hard work is its own reward...
    I don't know, I guess I mentioned it because your speech could maybe use a little revision.
    That is to say I would have learned a lot more if you would have just leaned in to the things that aren't glamorous a little harder and left out the weird contradictory focus on glorious moments by your recollections and estimations and then playing them down like they are mounting to Glory.
    If you're trying to come off as humble I can understand the motive but it's just not coming across well.
    That said, thank you for sharing and my best wishes to you and your family as you serve overseas.
