    It might take some further digging, but what I’m looking for is the *best* way to pan all the instruments in your mix so that the music doesn’t sound like it’s purely coming from the center, but spread out. I’ve listened to several pieces of music like that and it just makes the music sound fuller.

      Hey Max. Great question.
      Short answer: It depends on the mix and what you're trying to achieve.
      Long answer: I like to play with the width of a mix. Meaning I don't like it being static the whole length of a song. There are things I always keep dead center. Bass guitar, kick drum, snare drum, and lead vocals if there are any. Guitars I will pan depending on the song section. In a verse I may pan them 70-80% left and right, and generally there is only 1 guitar track on each side. But when a chorus hits I will have say 2 guitar tracks on each side. I'll keep one track on each side panned around 70-80% but the extra guitars will be hard panned. This way the chorus gets a little wider but then narrows out when it gets back to a verse.
      Drums on the other hand I do not pan them very hard. I think they sound too unnatural. Keeping in mind I always pan drummers perspective I pan things based around where they sound like they are coming from in the overheads. My room mics are the widest and sit around 70ish % left and right. I try to find a sweet spot where they blend with the guitar tracks, but nothing is interfering with each other. Overheads are panned a little less wide than the rooms.
      If there are synths or pianos or anything else in the track, it just depends. Since I always have guitars and drums I generally keep them closer to the center, panned maybe 30-50% left and/or right. Again just depends on the track.
      Oh, back up vocals. I treat them similar to synths and such.
      I hoped that helped. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    I have a question. I’m working with a song that has a lot of dynamic changes. For example, different drums are used in different sections. Different instrumentation and pads on different verses. Even different vocals and chops. In this setting, would it still be best to categorize / group according to drums, bass, mids, and vocals? Or do you think it might make more sense to almost categorize according to section with those groups as sub groups within the section? Example: VERSE 1 GROUP (sub group of bass, mid, drums, vox) and then CHORUS (bass, mid, drums, vox)?
    I noticed this feels more organized to my brain but it obviously takes longer since I’m having to mix each individual section with their sub groups accordingly.
    Yet on the flip side, if I have ONLY the broad group stacks of bass, drums, mids, vox - I run into the issue of mixing the drums for verse 1 but then those general group effects applied don’t translate well to the drums in the chorus… and so on…
    does that make sense? What are your thoughts on this? 🤔

    As someone that uses soft synths a lot I've had issues in the past where an install of the plugin update or for some other reason reset the plugin to default. It's a good idea to take a picture of the settings (this could apply to outboard gear as well) and save the picture in your project, or even take a screenshot to save elsewhere in case of file corruption. If you have the extra time even write them down on paper or print out something as a backup. So, not really organizational as much as a fail-safe.

      @@EverythingMusicRecording Would you happen to know if Logic 9 did the same? I'm preparing old projects to move to Pro X, the tracks with only 32bit support I'm just going to bounce to audio, but those with 64bit support I wonder if they'll transition over just fine?

    how do you sort / reorg the buses in mixer view ? you have then in an order but missed how you did that if the buses are already created.

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Před 2 lety

      Hey Alan. Normally you would set up the busses in order, either in the session or any template you might be using/making. But sometimes we still need to re-arrange our busses after they have been created. To do this, Press X to get into Logic's Mixer view. Select the Bus (busses) you need to re-arrange and press CONTROL + T on your keyboard. Alternatively from the mixer view you can go to Options - Create Tracks for Selected Channels.
      From there, go back to the arrangement page and you'll now see track lanes for your busses. From there you can re-arrange them like any other track. It's a few steps I know, but unless something has a track lane (busses do not by default) then you can't re-arrange it in the mixer view. Why? I don't know lol.
      Hope that helps Alan =)

    All Fine and good. However I've been trying to find out how to MOVE tracks/channels within the mixer view AFTER everything has been written and recorded.

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Před 3 lety

      Hey Dino. You cannot actually rearrange tracks in the mixer view. It has to be done in the arrange window. That will update your track order in the mixer view. Aux’s also have to have a track created in order to rearrange them.
      My video that just came out on Friday, tho on a different topic, will show you how to do exactly what I just explained. It’s called Logic Pro X Tutorial: Saving Custom Presets.
      Let me know if that helps you out 🙂
