      This was a great follow up. So you've defined how to use this tool. Now bring it together with a mix that uses distortion curves + subtractive EQ (cuts) to add flavor to a mix versus just using EQ (boosts and cuts)... maybe those differences aren't apropos and a different set of distortion vs. X is more relevant. But I think you can squeeze one more video out of this that focuses on bringing all that knowledge forward.

    Man. These videos are so good and hit all the right buttons for me. It's just such an engineer thing though. It won't help most people mix an album or pick out the right gear like other videos that most people would be searching for but it is still an invaluable tool. Even for non engineers like myself who just really want to understand the tools at their disposal to hopefully make something different to someone making new hardware we can all learn something from this. Demand makes it much harder to make this into a successful CZcams series and pushes stuff like this back into a space where, as a creative in the studio space or even someone developing music tech, you have to get lucky enough to meet someone who can understand and help you with this kind of knowledge. This is the type of understanding and knowledge that is severely lacking on the internet especially in such an educational format.

    That was a science lesson. Your series of videos is excellent. You've clearly studied audio engineering to an exceptional level and present it very well. The only disconnect I have here, is how does this relate to the real world? If you're using a saturation plugin with a graph type input, then you can easily see what type of distortion is being applied. But if you're using one that doesn't (like Decapitator or Tape sims for example), how do you know what type of distortion that's using? The only thing we can go on is what it sounds like as we try things. How do you know if the plugin you're using is symmetrical or asymmetrical?............Hang on a minute, you're not going to suggest we read the manual are you? That's sacrilege!

    • @sseb_music
      @sseb_music  Před 2 lety +4

      I demoed the difference between symmetric and asymmetric at 14:22. It's pretty easy to to build up an ear for the differences. Experimenting is really the quickest way to figure it out, but it doesn't take long to hear the differences in tone and once you figure it out you can apply that to any plugin where the curve isn't shown.

    Amazing! These are the videos I need, not the ones I deserve. Don't know if this is too big a topic but maybe you could explore loudness. I make electronic music (and I think you do too). Old engineers say crushing the master is stupid and DJ´s say its necessary. I've done nole tests on limiters and have to say the result is scary awful but I still think there's something really satisfying about a square master with kick drums smoothly transitioning to sub. Dan Worrall has some awesome videos on why crushing the master is stupid, but I think it might be interesting for someone with more sensitivity towards electronic music to explore the areas of grey. There's no right answer but I'm still interested in your two cents. Anyway thanks for the videos!!!

    It makes me happy that you showed examples using izotope trasher.
    It's my most used distortion and the fact that it shows the actual distortion curve is perfect!
    Thid video really helped understand how distortion is mathematically and digitally applied.
    Thanks!

    I rarely comment on videos. I must say, you are doing a really good job. I’ve been watching music production videos for 10 years and I’ve never seen anyone combine the science with the history, with practical implications in quite the way you have. What program are you using for the graphs and the graph animation?

    Your videos are immense, mate. Hope you return with more. There are loads of techniques I’ve been using for years in mixing that I don’t understand the science behind.
    The theory of synthesis and exploring the different types would be bloody brilliant.
    Hope you’re good!

    Ok, this is my new favorite channel on the internet. No offence, but usually when I see a music youtuber your age talking about technical side of things, I criiiiiiinge so much. In 80% of the cases, they just try to target producers for views by passing on any disillusion they currently have about mixing. Your videos are complete opposite of that. In fact, aside from music as a side hobby I worked for over a decade in broadcast indutry on various technical postitions. Not only I can fact-check 80% of things you say, but the rest 20% is new shit I just learned from you. And given the fact the rest is spot on, I'm absolutely sure the new knowledge is based in reality. There are three channels really worth looking into when it comes to mixing I think. Old Andi Vax videos, all Dan Worrall stuff ... and yours. Thank you. ❤(And pls don't give up.)

  • @Noone-of-your-Business

    Crossover distortion was also a problem in consumer level "Hi Fi" stereo amps up to the late 1980s when "Class A" amplifiers did away with the problem - at the cost of, well, _money,_ as well as sacrificing efficiency.
    Nice video. I won't remember all of this, but I now have a much more solid handle on the buttons and dials in my plugins. 😉
