      @@mr.w7803 yes, a little slower would be nice. These concepts are a bit complex, and I find myself still thinking about one thing, trying to piece it all together in my mind, and he's already off to the next bit. lol
      Really good content though. This is just what I need to level up my comprehension of everything I'm trying to achieve when producing/mixing.

    It's so refreshing to see a channel that talks about the literal behavior of sound and how to manipulate it in an intelligent manner. I'm really tired of other tutorials that utilize the philosophy of "just use your ears". Like I get it, using your ears is important but I want to be informed on what exactly it is I am doing when I'm tweaking settings. That way I can make decisions based on actionable predictions and not have to be stuck in settings-tweaking-limbo banging my head, hoping, pleading that I miraculously land on some sort of useable tone that works well within my mix.

I deeply love the recent improvement in digital models of analog saturation. Besides fancy math (P42 Climax, Softube stuff) i also really love Acustica’s recent saturation plugins (their tech is based on convolution). @@sseb_music Honestly the basic "What is saturation and How do I use it" I always got the answer, "saturation will add more harmonic distortion in areas where it didn't previously exist or perceive well." but that never fully explained how I use it. I always see big artist use the HECK out of saturation to get big and fat basses or their "Fat rack" but I never understood how to get it to sound to such a degree. But the way you explained and demonstrated here helped be MUCH better understand what saturation is doing and how to go about using it/abusing it.

    Very good video, very helpful. It's amazing what a little EQ before a saturation can do. And this maybe explains why engineers really preferred analog EQ (and analog everything) in, especially, the early days of digital audio. Of course, many engineers still prefer analog everything.... I've discovered just by trial and error that multiple stages of saturation seems to work "better" in most situations; now I have a good way of understanding why that might be. Choosing the best combination of saturation types is still ad hoc for me though.

It's great to now the theory side, but I think it's more useful when we use something practically and learn by doing. It's come more naturally to me, as opposed to front loading the theory and then trying to let that influence my creative process. Anyway, great video!

    EQ is EVERYTHING. The reason we can tell a hihat from a kick or a snare is mostly harmonic content, their stamp on the spectrum (of course duration of the sounds and how their harmonics decay is also key, but it's just the same thing, but over time)

  • @QuabmasM
    @QuabmasM Před rokem +1

    Simpler way to say all of this: saturation plugins have a threshold & the more dynamic louder frequencies in a signal are whats hitting the threshold first thus distorting first & more than the other frequencies as they come in later as you continue to raise the signal into the threshold. The interesting & mystical part of all this is how doing this adds harmonics & thus adds harmonic volume w/o raising the dynamic volume.

    Hearing "missing fundamental" is why tube hi-fi amps (I'm speaking here more about those used for listening, not music production) have that "fat bass" sound - in fact tube amps aren't very good at amplifying high amplitude bass but because of distortion they make an impression of that bass being there.

    Glad you're back man! Once again you've outlined some critical principals that are absolutely invaluable to know and I deeply appreciate the work you put into this. The notes about producing more evenly distributed distortion, balancing the resultant distortion products, executing Distortion Voicing, driving higher frequencies to produce the Missing Fundamental phenomena, and the noncommutative nature of saturation in relation to EQ are all excellent principals and I can already see how I might implement them when balancing large groups of instruments while trying to keep them all distinct from one another.
    Your depictions have been extremely helpful, and your general editing, sound levels, and scripting have been perfect thus far. Definitely looking forward to your next video on Saturation Curves.

      Thanks for all the kind words! I appreciate it 😀 Saturators can commute with other nonlinearities. If you have nonlinearity like x^(1/2) (which is a classic looking saturation curve) and another nonlinearity x^2 (which I guess technically would be called waveshaping) those two nonlinearities commute since x^(2(1/2))=x^((1/2)2)=x so the order of the nonlinearities doesn't matter in this case. Also interestingly, the system becomes linear, so you can stack nonlinearities together and end up with something linear!!

      @@sseb_music I didn't think it would be that elegant. Thanks for the clarification!

    Lots of helpful information. Aside from that the Dani California mix had too much bass. But as far as understanding saturation thank you. You explain things in waveforms and thats so helpful instead of trying to break it down into simple forms. Understanding waves is a much broader sense of music production.

    Maaan, it’s such a deep knowledge that I definitely should watch your vids several times to understand it properly❤️ 🧠 👂 So sad that English is not my native language
