How To Find Your Creative Flow

- Creative Flow is something that always sounded so amazing to me, but honestly, I didn't feel it for years. Once in a blue moon, I would experience just a bit here and there, but nothing I could generate on a consistent basis. Like many things, it just seemed mysterious and frustrating to me.
Then I heard something about how our brains work, and I ran with the idea until I undeniably detected that I had cracked the code to finding my creative flow. My inability to find it wasn't because I didn't have talent or wasn't a real artist, but instead, I was just starting in a place that left me nowhere to go and nothing to work with.
First, you generate things to work with--this is the 'generative' stage, and you don't judge anything here. This is play, free-flowing, stream of consciousness creating--it's interacting with texture, color, shape without any judgments.
Only then will you naturally move to the 'evaluative' stage and with this organic order of things, you don't get stuck. It still takes practice, mind you, but try it and see if you don't feel the difference.

This is why the notification bell is so important re favorite channels. Thanks for what you said; it makes a lot of sense. My life is an almost constant flow of problem-solving AND making (or dreaming up) improvements. My brain is always doodling. I know what THAT is, but I LOVE my brain for providing the hobby of thinking. 💜💜💜
I know-it’s so helpful to understand the different functions it can have. That made all the difference for me.

Hi from the UK! Im just starting in collage (still making a stash of coloured papers). I love this video as I've always been held back with art as I'm always trying to be (almost) perfect and I love your way of just putting pieces randomly. I'm definitely going to try this. Thankyou for making these vids.
Wonderful! I love hearing this-collage has been so good for that part of me that tries to be perfect right from the start but it ends up really hampering the process and I don’t get the joy of seeing it ‘come together’ later. Glad you are discovering this as well!
I loved your classes, they always bring such joy and great ideas to the table!❤
Thank you Jill! 🥰
This makes so much sense and helps clarify my creative process. Thanks Marabeth!
I’m so glad it makes sense, Janine! I know it changed everything for me…
great tips! i find what helps me is to use thrown away items or cheapo tat then i really care not but always turn out the very Best .i bought somebody elses old craft paint stash and theyre good too . Your vids are amazing by the way
Thank you, I’m glad it’s helpful! And sometimes the less we ‘care’ about the materials (as in value$) it can bring down the urgency enough to really let us be more creative.
Thanks dear.
You are so welcome! 😊
