It has one of the best sound quality among portable kits, in fact the most understandable for me. What a pity that it's also one of the noisiest radio.
I bought the Tecsun R-909 as a companion to my XHDATA D-219 thinking it would be better on AM (and to experience "pure analog" tuning on SW and FM.) The 219 is adequate on AM for local stations, but I was hoping to hear distant clear-channel AM stations at night. I would say the 909 is better on AM, but not by much even though the 219 has 9k steps. FM seems the same, but I think the DSP in the 219 makes discriminating between close FM stations easier. Only having the 909 for a few days, I'm surprised how much I like the 219 more than the 909. The 909 has weird ergonomics (band switch on the top of the radio, volume on one side, tuning on knob the other.) The 219 is better in this respect. Having the band switch on the front along with the dial indicator is nice, as is the tuning and volume on the same side of the radio. The tuning wheel is better on the 219 versus the 219's knob What really surprised me is that the 219 seemed superior to the 909 on Shortwave. I think the DSP has a lower noise floor. The 909 does take good advantage of a long wire additional antenna. The 219 doesn't seem to benefit as much with a long-wire. I think for $12 or so, the D-219 is the better buy, except for someone primarily interested in AM listening.
