I'm sorry for your loss. My father retired from the Marine corps and kept up those values the entire time. He passed away December 2020 at 63 years old. Very hard losing such a role model. I feel your pain
My dad SSGT Siegmund L. Odom is now guarding the streets of heaven. He was faithful to the Corps for twenty years. He retired 16 March 1976 with full Honors. He served two tour's in vietnam. He was buried with full Honors in December 2019. I thank you all for your sacrifice and love for this country, those that have served in all branches of the US Military. Thank you for keeping us safe.

I, as a single parent had some assistance raising my children. By my Grandfather, he was an immigrant with Old World values that became very successful and also, my father a retired Col., and quite eccentric. During the early teenage years of my children, my father became ill and passed away. The burden was all mine, and the weight on my shoulders had increased. Like the foundation of a structure, every stone had to be carefully placed. My son Michael decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corps , He felt the need to exceed all the men in our family. As a rooster in a hen house, the feathers started to ruffle. All I could do was standby his decision. Michael has a sister Michelle: she is two years younger than him. By no means did she agree with her bothers decision. By leaving, Michelle felt abandoned. I was blamed for everything. The day before my son left for the Marines was the most difficult for me. These were my sons last moments of boyhood, and the first steps of manhood. I had to dig deep to find the right thing to say. So I whispered, Michael no matter what happens the door is always open. , He just looked at me and nodded his head. Now the house seemed empty, and for the first time in years I was alone. In a strange way I was relaxed, but my work was far from over. Within three months I would go to South Carolina and see him graduate. Michael wrote and telephoned every chance he had. His letters were always upbeat. He told me that he would go to Church every Sunday. Later I found out everyone did their Staff Sgt. wasn’t allowed. Michael sent his friends letters that were totally different. He had told them of his dislike of boot camp and how he wanted to come home. The time had come to be a spectator at Michaels graduation. I arrived in South Carolina a day early and went right to the hotel. As Noah’s Ark the lobby was filled with pairs of parents from all walks of life. I wondered how much we had in common, since all our sons had flocked in the same direction. I felt a sense off fulfillment, that I as a single parent had done something right. On the day of graduation I didn’t know whose moment it was, his or mine. All the parents were given a tour of Paris Island that lasted about four hours. The history of the Marine Corps, was everywhere, and the reminder of how many men gave their life for this country. I watched the Marine crucible, the melting pot of boys turned into men through intense mental and physical training. The time had come to witness the graduation ceremony. The young men marched back forth with every move as if mechanical. ( all to the beat of the drum). As I watched, moments of my sons childhood flashed through my mind like a movie in reverse. My mind was somewhere distant from my surroundings, graduation was announced. White hats flew in the air as doves at a peace summit, it was time to see what had become of my son. The search seemed endless in a sea of blue. Just when I gave up hope, there in front of me he stood. At that moment I changed how I regarded my son. Michael walked up slowly and reached out his hand, never losing eye contact with me. He shook my hand to acknowledge the fact he had taken the first step toward manhood. The lyrics left a major impression on me, the attitude, in your face valor, work ethic, and humor made it thoroughly enjoyable to sing this. Usually I do classic Star Spangled Banner and America The Free, and also have done the German ww2 Paratrooper song, but this, I will never forget.
