  • This video explains the basic concept of analyzing a sentence by using a tree diagram. The diagram is drawn based on the formulated phrase structure (PS) rules. These PS rules determine the number of branches each constituent has.

    Thankyou so much for the explanation sir 🙏🏻In a tree diagram, a sentence is divided into two parts: a subject and a predicate. They are made up of noun phrases or verb phrases. These are groups of words that include a noun or verb and any words that add as modifiers. The subject is a noun phrase while a predicate is usually a verb phrase.

    Thank you for the explanation sir🙏.
    One thing that must be underlined is that every sentence must have NP and VP. To be able to make a tree diagram, we must understand how the rules are. The first, NP, consists of only Noun elements but can also be followed by other elements such as Det, Adv, Adj, PP, CompP. Second, VP, the main element is only V but can be followed by other elements such as NP, PP, AdvP. Third, AP, the main element is Adj, but can be followed by other elements such as Deg, PP, CompP. Next to AdvP, the main element is Adv, but can be followed by other elements such as Deg, CompP. Finally, PP which consists of Prep and NP.
    In writing the Det element, it must be specific because Det consists of several types such as article, Dem, Quant, ProS, NP Poss.

    3. Noun Phrase only can be composed of a personal pronoun.
    4. Verb Phrase can be composed with linking verbs (it symbolized with v1)
    5. Adjective Phrase only can be composed of an adjective as the main element of adjective phrase.
    6. Adverb Phrase only can be composed of an adverb.
    7. Prepositional Phrase only can be composed of preposition.

    The most important poin before drawing a tree diagram is we have to know the PS (Phrase structure) rules. A sentence must consist of NP and VP. So analyzing or visualizing sentences using tree diagrams can also sharpen our memory about parts of speech.

      You should know the possible modifier(s) for each of the phrase core, i.e., noun, verb, adjective, and adverb.

    Terima kasih pak atas penjelasan di video di atas. Saya pernah mengambil mata kuliah morphology and syntax tahun 2019 yang lalu pak dan saya tidak mengerti sama sekali dengan tree diagram, apa itu tree diagram, bagaimana cara menggunakannya, dan sebagainya. Namun dengan video ini saya lebih mudah menyerap dan memahami materi ini, terlebih lagi saya bisa memutar ulang video ini berkali-kali sampai saya benar benar memahaminya. Semoga dengan metode kuliah yang bapak terapkan semakin banyak mahasiswa yang menguasai materi di mata kuliah yang bapak ajarkan. Semoga bapak selalu diberi kesehatan dan perlindungan oleh Tuhan Yang Maha Esa🙏

    Thank you so much for your clear explanation, sir🙏 It's really helpful for us to understand about sentence analysis. The use of tree diagram support your explanation and made it all clear and understandable. Now I know the main key of the sentence analysis as what you said "it is not difficult as long as we know the phrase structure rules".

      The most important step is to break up the sentence into several phrases. Once you are able to identify each of the phrases in the sentence, it will be easier for you to formulate the PS rules.

      Penggunaan tanda panah tidak disarankan dalam membuat garis pada diagram pohon. Silahkan lihat ke teori dasarnya (Veit, 1986).

      @rusdinoorrosa9155  Před 2 lety +1

      In addition to a tree diagram, there are several other diagrams that can be used in analyzing sentences. However, a tree diagram has been confirmed to be a simple and comprehensive diagram in visualizing a sentence analysis. It clearly shows all the words that constitute a sentence together with their respective labels.

    Thank you for the explanation sir, I conclude that from the beginning the sentence consists of NP and VP. Does the sentence always consist of NP and VP from the beginning sir? or can it be more than that?
    I'm really looking forward to a video explaining more complex rule diagrams sir.

    • @saskiamaharani2709
      @saskiamaharani2709 Před 2 lety +2

      In my opinion, sentence structure starts with NP and VP because a sentence has at least one verb and one noun. Furthermore, the formula for NP and VP is very complex and comprehension or almost has all the parts of speech and also the phrase.

    Thank you so much for you good presentation, Sir. I quite understand some of the points. It's just that I don't understand the part of analyzing sentences using a tree diagram with three branches. So, can I get more explanation about it?

    • @rusdinoorrosa9155
      @rusdinoorrosa9155  Před 2 lety +1

      The number of branches depends on the phrase structure rules. The number of branches can even be more than three branches if the PS rule states that the NP is composed of more than three elements (e.g. Det + Adv + Adj + N). In the sentence level, three branches are required when the sentence analyzed is a compound sentence. You can follow the way I demonstrate such analysis in the video.

    Thanks for the explanation sir, but I wanna ask you how we can create a NP which is have more than one N? Like may be my name SRI REVI REGITA so how we can create a NP then sir?? I hope you can reply my question because I’m stuck here
    And another like PP because more than one preposition like In Queens, New York on 12 december 1998
    How we can creat PP in tree diagram sir??
    Thanks a lot

    • @rusdinoorrosa9155
      @rusdinoorrosa9155  Před rokem

      NP can consist of only N. So, in relation to the name (no matter howclong the name is), it only belongs to N.
