Coming from southIndia, I will assure you SPB's works in south Indian movies is nothing less than Rafi Sahab if not more. Losing SPB is biggest void for all of us. He was singing so melodious until his last breath.

Exactly. Unfortunately Bollywood never interviewed him properly or no one show promoted him as a mentor (except one or two shows that too during 90s). Otherwise we would have heard many things from him like this. But we southues are lucky becz we have tonnes of memories like this where he explains like this and yet it's not enough for us.

SPB was part of a musical troupe (before he became famous as a singer) which had other members like Ilaya Raja, his brother Gangai Amaran etc who are big names in Tamil Cinema. SPB has said he would often sing Rafi songs in the places that troupe performed.

Rafi was SPB's idol, SPB learnt singing and also began playback singing without getting classically trained by just hearing Rafi's songs many, many times, and Rafi excels in “most of the aspects (not all)” of singing compared to SPB, but Rafi has never-ever sung some songs like SPB - No body in the world can beat/match SPB! All-rounder Sonu Nigam, the King of Emotions/ Expressions/Feelings, comes close, but his voice texture with femininity will put him back! My choice for "all-rounder" artists would be Kishore Kumar (KishOre Dha), Sonu Nigam, S.P. BaalasubrahmaNyam, HimEsh Reshammiya, Zubeen Garg, & Dr. BaalaMuraLiKrishna.
