Whoever did the sound for this needs sacking! Amber is an amazing vocalist and they did not do her justice with that awful echo.

ONCE AGAIN, Amber Riley is forgetting she's human! I saw a video here called 'Times Amber Riley Forgot She's Human'. These were when she was on Glee. She's made me cry so much from her "forgetting" I should be dehydrated! But she's just amazing, a real star 🤩
This version of "Listen" makes so much more sense! I mean, I know the original one was made up to the film and to promote a Beyoncé' single, but the new lyrics is so girl power and sisterhood that makes total sense!

I totally agree. I honestly didn't feel that much sympathy for Deena when watching the film. That changed after I saw a great live production of "Dreamgirls" (the actress I saw really brought the character to life). Although "Listen" isn't in the musical, this performance adds so much to her character as well.
Amber is such an amazing singer.... She deserve all the grammys and all the recognition she could have!

first, they sound great.
however, it bugs me that only the original cast seems to understand there should be a huge contrast from Deena to effie. effie is the voice and Deena is the whole package. deenas voice should be light and pop and shouldn't rival effie's. when deena is cast as great singer the plot starts to crumble. deena can't sing like effie which is why it's such an injustice effie gets sidelined.
Exactly alot of these recent productions cast actresses to follow Beyonce's portrayal rather than follow the original characterisation of Deena who is fashioned after Diana Ross.

Saw this in London this year in July didn't see Amber saw someone else but the Effie I saw wow when she sang And I am Telling You she blew it away who acting and singing were above and beyond would of loved to have seen Amber Riley but the Effie I saw was just as talented.

The sounding crew in this performance is shocking its a credit to the artists that they held it down like they did! but i will say that I prefer the original Listen lol
I have never been a fan of Listen. The original solo I thought was too contemporary for the period score, then the first version of the duet just didn’t sell me. But now we have this new, reorchestrated version and it is perfection!!!!! This is a showstopper to rival AIATYING. Just epic and wonderful and Amber and Lissi performed it perfectly. Love!!!!!

The idea of Listen as a duet takes away Deena's agency, in a way. In the film, she leaves on her own terms, but in this production it's because Effie helped her make up her mind. (It also doesn't help that the actress plays her as pretty helpless. But to be fair, Deena's agency didn't exist really before Beyoncé took the role). With this, they're trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. A duet between Deena and Effie makes sense, and so does putting in a popular song from the film. But Listen isn't a duet. To tell someone "Listen" is pretty commanding and when she's asking for forgiveness, it looses that. If you're going to try to put Listen into Dreamgirls, it should be Deena's solo, as it was written. I wish the song was presented as the opposite of And I Am Telling You and staged as such. Deena is now where Effie was and I wish we could see that more played out.

Stage theater use wigs so they can properly mic them on stage. From a theater, seating 400+ seats, the look isn’t terrible and it’s functional for actors.

Who has the higher harmony for “back in the day” at around 7:00? In one version I saw it’s clear that Deena goes higher but in this version it seems that Effie goes higher? They are both amazing and sound so similar that it’s hard to figure out tbh

Listen wasn't in the original play it's only in the movie they had to add it in a place that it for best meaning it would have to be changed a bit.

JHud delivered it with about 40 takes and great editing. Bill Condon won her that Oscar.

bryands86 well, the song was written for Beyoncé to have in the film. Clearly they adapted the song for this production. That's all well and good, however, I don't like it. That song is so iconic; everyone knows the lyrics. Also, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just my two cents.
