    Dave, the best part of this video was your youngest little chatterbox. Even if she never hunts, she has learned that food does not always come from a store. She has also learned a history lesson. This is how meat used to be put on the table. Thanks again for the video.

    Dave, I have so much respect for you as a sportsman and a father! Having your children involved and showing them practical and so very important life adventures. Your youngest daughter is off the charts for being so super sweet, "I'm holding it Dad" melted my heart! Watch her be your best little hunting buddy! I have never gutted a deer so I found this video so very practical and most helpful. God bless you and your lovely family and deer season will be here before you know it.

      When my kids were little, (girl and boy), I got a fresh road killed doe that someone had just hit, (wasn't damaged too bad). When I cut it open it had two embryos in it. So I got the kids and showed them and they found it interesting, did not gross them out. We ate a lot of road kills back then, didn't have much money.

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  Před 6 lety

      Merkdog, thanks again for the comment. The reason I say that is because sometimes I worry that my vids on a certain subjects are a little longer than others you find on CZcams on the same subject. But in this video I wanted to explain the reason for all the things that I do when gutting a deer. I think it's that important. I know some other vids try to show you how fast they are at gutting and that's cool, but that's not what I'm trying to do. For most of us, we should take our time, do it right and have a clean, best eating animal. At my channel I have a "Deer Processing" playlist in the library section, if you might be interested in doing the whole deer yourself. Keep in touch and let me know how the season goes. KPO

    Question: does all the Blood that you had to clean have not come if you had let the heart untouched?

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  Před 6 lety +1

      Pablo, thanks for the kind words. To answer your question, generally when you shoot an animal through the chest area there will be internal bleeding whether the heart is disturbed or not. So you're going to be dealing with blood when you gut a deer. I'm a big fan of Joe Rogan too. Thanks for watching, KPO.

    We always hung them by the rear feet-joint and removed the trachea to help with cooling and if there is clean fresh snow, pack the inside cavity, let it melt, drain and repeat until cool.
    I might try hanging by the head and see how it drains on the next one.
    Do you just rope it around the neck?

    I like the pliers for the butthole. I've always started up at the top of the deer in the chest and worked down to the butthole. Your method looks a lot better. Curious if you have had any luck with the Buttout tool? We usually split the pelvis with a small hatchet but that can be tricky and easily get screwed up if you aren't on center or swing too hard

    Oddly enough, I split the rib cage but not the pelvis. I use the "butt out" tool and a piece of string, which ensures there is no fecal matter in the cavity. I keep all of my gutting gear in a small tool box: knives, chest spreader, gloves (both arm and wrist length) cleaning wipes, hand sanitizer, and gallon sized zip lock blades. Immediately after gutting, I make sure to grab the inside tenderloins as they are prone to drying out (hence the zip lock bags). Is there a reason for not opening up the chest?
