i noticed your comment and i too have been reading all of Lucy Maud Montgomery's works now in my late 30s. If you haven't read them, there are several volumes of her short stories published in the 80s + 90s that are wonderful as well.
I've just discovered your channel and feel I've died and gone to heaven! I too love reading children's books and go back to them from time to time when I need a "cosy" read. I'll contribute Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain as an early favorite, not sure if Tolkien fits in here but I do reread him pretty much every year. Arthur Ransome's We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea is wonderful too. There is such comfort in rereading - I already know where things are going so I can relax and savour the writer's style. Alison Uttley's semi-autobiographical Country Girl written in 1931 is my go-to comfort book. (I have an Audible version which I listen to if I have trouble sleeping.) It is a sensitive and lyrical account of a little girl growing up on a remote Derbyshire farm in the Victorian period. I suppose it might be called children's literature but in its subtle exploration of not only Susan's feelings and experiences, but also those of the adults in her life, the book can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
The Country Child? I discovered this at a very difficult time in my life and I was entranced. I have a lovely old paperback and it is a treasured possession, nice to hear that others still love it too!

Some favorite children's books of mine: Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, The Abandoned by Paul Gallico, the "Jill" books by Ruby Ferguson, the "Five Find-Outers and Dog" books by Enid Blyton. I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone in enjoying a re-visit of my old children's favorites!
Any Rosemary Sutcliff novel is a delight to read, Astrid Lindgren’s Seacrow Island, and Margaret Leighton books. The Phantom Tollbooth is always entertaining. How did I not know about Eva Ibbotson!

I just finished Wind in the Willows for the first time (I'm 57!) and I mentioned ot someone that I don't know why it's a kid's book as the descriptions and esp with Toad's pride and impulsiveness seem so relatable to me as an adult

thank you miranda, i really find your videos to be comforting and i love getting these recommendations. i too turn to children's authors i love very often, particularly lm montgomery, and completely agree that the emily trilogy doesn't get enough attention. i've recently discovered enid blyton's adventure series and am really loving it.
I'm so pleased that you gave the Emily books such a great review. I love them so much! I also love Ballet Shoes, Tom's Midnight Garden and of course Little Women and The Wind in the Willows. I've only just found Robin Stevens (thanks to you) and I'm finding the book 'Mistletoe and Murder' enjoyable. If you're fond of ballet books, have you read Ballet for Laura and Laura's Summer Ballet by Linda Blake? Ballet for Laura is set in London and Laura's Summer Ballet is set at West Bay in Dorset. They are both lovely reads though I have a preference for Ballet for Laura.
Oh I loved Ballet Shoes!! I read Tennis Shoes last summer which is so fun. Wind in the Willows is so wonderful, yes!!! I should read that again. I read middle grade books often.
As a child I read tons and tons of Enid Blyton. Also liked the William books by Richmal Crompton. Enjoyed a lot of animal stories by Thornton W. Burgess and adored The Wind in the Willows. I have two sisters who were older than me and they had a whole series of very small print books stored away in an old cupboard written maybe in the 50's. These were adventure stories written mainly for girls, but I thoroughly enjoyed them. I wonder if you have heard of these? I think they came out very week and had tiny tiny print. But the stories were wonderful and exciting and a lot of them were about boarding school. I also enjoyed the adventure stories written by Malcolm Saville, but these I think are all out of print now. I have searched for them with no success. I love listening to you and your readings!
I think Linnets and Valarians, is the most perfect book around, it is a real toss up between that and The Little White Horse. I have read all of Elizabeth Gouge and have several copies of my favourites as they keep falling apart with constant rereading! I shall always cherish these books!
Yes! I LOOOOVE reading children's books as an adult. I remember the Betsy-Tacy books! I have a few of them! Yes, Emily of New Moon is a must as well. I have to say, you get the most beautiful editions for your library. I have never seen this edition of Little Women; it's GORGEOUS! I have added a few of these that I haven't heard of to my birthday wish list for the end of the month. I must admit, I really hate when your videos end as I could listen to you talk about books for hours. I feel like I am sitting with an old friend. I've read almost all of these and I heartily agree with your recommendations. I've just discovered Eva Ibbotson and have only read A Countess Below Stairs, which I love. Serendipitously, I just ordered Reluctant Heiress and Morning Gift and now I even more can't wait! It's been a while since I've read the Emily books. Miranda, have you read Montgomery's Pat of Silver Bush books or The Blue Castle?

I just found Linnets and Valerians at an estate sale for $1. I really enjoy Elizabeth Goudge also.
