But the Allman Brothers made us all cooler somehow. It is southern gospel. So Midnight Rider is party and laughter. Blue Sky is should be next. Wee Willie You raise a good point, but to be fair, they gave credit to whoever wrote the song, and paid royalties to whoever own the publishing rights. Now if they said they wrote the song, and kept all the money like the way Led Zeppelin did on a lot of songs, well then that’s stealing.

When you have stellar musicians like the ABB it's just magic. These guys were so young, too. Gregg turned into a great songwriter, and other members did also, like Dickie (blue Skye). Oh, I think the length was for radio play. They were pressured by their record co. to put out some "hits" so they could make bigger money. The ABB still did it their way, but did put out some music that was better for radio to let more fans get to know them. I'm sure they can do a Long jam on this song as well when in concert. Thanks for playing this !!!

3 minutes was the Max for quite a long time if you hoped to get on the radio. In those days, radio was pretty much the ONLY way to get your music out there to the public. Radio stations wielded immense power and the thousands of stories about all the shenanigans radio stations forced the artists and their agents to perform are legendary...and funny and perverted and most of the time...illegal.

As a baby boomer in his sixties, having lived and flourished in the times that these artists originally recorded and released this music, it is very moving and gratifying to me to have young people such as the two of you exploring and appreciating this music. These are the sounds and energy that powered so many of us through our lives, this kick ass commitment to the rock and roll ideals of living life to its fullest. Now long replaced by drab factory music. But just as dinosaurs once strode the earth in droves, this music was everywhere in our lives, so many great artists, too many to actually even rediscover in full--and young people today have no idea. So I appreciate and as I said, am moved by young people such as yourself who are making the effort to listen to this music and allow yourselves to be moved and even shaken by it. I loved your reaction the moment when Roger Daltrey screams towards the end of The Who's "Won't Ge Fooled Again." That scream happens to be one of the great moments in rock and roll, maybe the purest expression of the art that exists, certainly one of the top ten moments. And it was great to see your honest excitement. What next? SO much more. Of the Allman Brothers probably just get right to their most played classic, "One Way Out," though for a little change and some exquisite guitar duets, "Blue Skies." The early Allman brothers were powered by legendary guitarist Duane Allman, who died all too young and early in a motorcycle accident (his brother Greg handles the vocals and plays keyboards). He is featured on both the songs I mentioned (along with fellow guitarist Dickie Betts) and also lent his magic to "Whipping Post." Other legends you should check out: Ten Years After and super guitarist Alvin Lee. Try their supercharged version of "Coming Home" on the woodstock album (that one you should watch as well as listen to). Also give albino guitarist Johnny Winter a listen. Wow. Try his version of "Johnny B Goode," though almost anything he ever recorded will do. Santana is amazing. Start with "Black Magic Woman." Anyway I really am enjoying your videos and getting a chance to relive some of the greatest music of all time through fresh ears. Thanks!

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is on of the greatest instrumentals you’ll ever listen to. One Way Out is an ABB classic... The there’s Kind a Bird, which was the tribute to Charlie Parker, cowritten by Warren Haynes...
Also, check out Gov’t Mule..., Warren’s main band. There first 5 albums are ridiculous.

So many worthy songs...if you choose Statesboro Blues, make sure it's the live version from the Fillmore recordings. Jessica and Liz Reed are monster instrumentals. Seven Turns, End Of The Line, and Nobody Left To Run With are quality tunes from the Betts/Haynes period, and their recording of Rockin' Horse from Hittin' The Note is one of the best versions of that song.

I'm lucky enough to have seen the Allman Brothers a bunch of times, and as great as their tunes were, their live versions are ridiculous! Live at the Fillmore East is probably one of the finest live albums you'll ever hear. If the fadeout is too fast for you on the studio versions, have no fear - the live versions are jamtastic!
