    The flatter the surface the more the IR-light gets reflected, the less you can messure it. It basically acts as a mirror for IR and you messuring the ceiling.
    You can even see the outlines when you move the camera.
    For the CPU for example there was an outline on the PCB which should be an indicator for how hot it is at least.
    Touching it (rather don't do it xD) will show your finger it is above 60 degrees. But faaaar away from 30 which would be cold to the touch.

    • @Rob_65
      @Rob_65 Před 7 měsíci +3

      It is not just the flatter the surface is. It also depends on the material and color. This is why the more expensive thermal cameras come with an adjustable εr
      If you want to compare different components on the PCB, you have to put a (mat) black sticker on the CPU. I will often just use a piece of black electrical insulation tape, that seems to work as well as the "official" stickers that came with my camera

  • @digitalsparky
    @digitalsparky Před 7 měsíci +15

    Unfortunately with that first test, the handbrake process had already completed by the time you were doing thermals. You could also see the cores were all inactive.
    Edit: another thing to add, you may need to put something (like masking tape) over the CPU before you thermal probe with a laser - this is because the results you get back will be malformed due to light scattering from the mirror finish on the die.

    Hi Lee. Thanks for the interesting test. But it seems to me that it will be much more interesting to see the results of testing these same cooling systems under full SoC load. I mean 100% CPU PLUS 100% GPU. This will tell us more about the limits for use with emulators and for working with media.

    @leepspvideo, in case you were not aware, the thermal camera needs to be calibrated for the emissivity of the surface you are measuring. The CPU being metallic and shiny has a lower emissivity than non metallic matte surfaces.
    I recommend to use some 3M Blue painter's tape and apply it on all the components you want to test and repeat the test. Then you should see that the CPU is reading much higher than 28C you measured around 4-5 minute mark in your video.

    With the stock cooler, you are also cooling the ram at the same time as the cpu. With the icecooler, it is only cooling the cpu.
    So, you will notice an overall (slightly) higher temperature (especially with the fan off) when cooling all components than just the CPU

I really don't see were the ice tower would be needed maybe extreme over clocking? I would think it would become unstable before heat would be a problem but I could be wrong .. that being said the ice tower is just awesome its like a mini 212 evo and thats almost worth the 15 dollars in my book

    I bought a Khadas Edge 2 last year and finally got video drivers working correctly with an Armbian distro running off an SSD. Compared to the Pi 4, it flies. Kinda seems like the thermals are the same between the pi 5 and rk3588s with the official khadas cooler. Price-wise, the pi 5 is definitely tempting but I just don't feel compelled now that I have a distro that can pretty much benefit from the pi ecosystem of software. Kinda wonder how the next release of rockchip devices will compare to the pi 5. I'm sure the video drivers would take time to iron out.

    I guess the CPU cover is aluminium which has very good thermal conductivity, but very very low emissivity so won't be picked up by the IR camera. It's also the reason survival blankets are made from aluminium foil, all of your body's radiant heat is reflected keeping you warm.

    Can you do a video about USB SSD enclosures please? I would like to know if the RPI5 has the same issue as the RPI4 with USB enclosures. The issue where some usb enclosures were incompatible with the RPI4
    Thank you

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 7 měsíci

      I assume you're talking about the electronics and cable within the enclosure, rather than the enclosure itself. If it's the former then, yes, there do appear to be incompatibility issues, I have seen them myself.
      I don't think there's an easy answer other than to keep the connecting cable as short as possible and you might need to use either a powered enclosure or connect it via a powered USB hub.
      Those issues do tend be because the RPi PSU can't supply enough power to power both the Pi and any peripherals connected to it simultaneously.

    • @TBMartin
      @TBMartin Před 7 měsíci

      @@terrydaktyllus1320 No, I am talking about the usb issue all RPI4's suffer with. Because they designed the USB part of the RPI badly, There are certain chipsets used in enclosures that are known to be working/not working so not all USB enclosures work. I'm wondering if this has been fixed so they all work now.

  • @NeilBakerUK

    On the official pi cooler setup you were testing it has a plastic case bottom limiting air flow to the bottom of the board.
    On the ice tower setup the pi was standing on tall legs with lots of air flow under it.
    I wonder if the original cooler pi couldn't radiate as much heat away from the bottom of the pcb, and how much this may have adjusted the results?

  • @makerbymistake

      @@leepspvideo I read that too but isn't the heat spreader mate instead of glossy and reflective? Perhaps the only easy way to find out for sure is to actually touch the heat spreader to see if it is anywhere near the number (very low temp) given by the temp reader.

    Are you able to do a test on how quiet the coolers are?
    I've heard the official cooler is fairly loud?

    • @NeilBakerUK
      @NeilBakerUK Před 7 měsíci +2

      The official cooler is very quiet. Its rpm is controlled via hardware, and the fan doesn't even spin under normal desktop use so silent. When you play CZcams, it might come on, but then only at the lowest speed. This fan fits within the official case, which has vents at the bottom and top for air flow. That would lower and fan noise further. You can't put the ice tower in an official pi case, so you'll hear all the fan noise it creates
