I Made my OWN Keyboard Mods... It didn't go well...

- There are a lot of mechanical keyboard mods out there! In this video, I explore 2 pre-existing hacks and create my own. The one I made is actually really interesting but I don't think I took the proper measures before attempting it. In any case, it was a fun experience and a new skill unlocked!

Leave your suggestions in the comments! Y'all are killing it already with the ideas!
I can't find the channel you mention. Could you write down the name?
keybored@@danmar007
silicone in the key caps!
I would have just filled the base of the keyboard with silicone caulc and let it dry.
Someone else already suggested this for the caps too.
Pretty good result though.
Caulk wouldn't dry out fully. That's the main issue
This is a great video! Considering companies charge an arm and leg for various different dampening effects, this is very promising for the tinkerer!
Mass loaded vinyl is the way. Also, those switches need to be lubed. They sound super scratchy.
Sooo... Hmmm... seems the videos have slowed alot or am I mistaken...... any reason?
25 yeas ago, I brome a stem in an alps mount keycap (on an AT101W). I used hot glue to fix it, and liked the sound, so I glooped a bunch of hot glue into them. Then the stem fell back off, and I tossed the keyboard. They were stupid common at the time, so no love lost.
Maybe try some thin self adhesive asphalt/bitumen mats instead of the tape.
Would say try some peel and sticke closed cell foam or maybe even a face towel or old shirt layered together.
Idea's in the bank!
What about hot glue gun, with some glue sticks? Can't be crazier than what you just did! Lol.
Noted! I think I know where I would put the sticks. Just need to find a keyboard with extra ping.
It's aliiiive!! 😂
I did some cheap mods myself just last month. Tape mod(2 layers of painters tape), clip and dielectric grease the stabs, bandaid mod and added some foam from one of those shredded memory foam pillows.
Very happy with the results.
Edit: Oh and also camo keycaps 🤣
Playdough would have work too.
good call, though playdough would harden after a while, removing the dampening capabilities. Might even rattle in the case. Might add this one to the next vid but put it in now to see the effects in a month or so!
I like this video. stay safe snows
Cut a load of rubber bands and pack them in.
Will that silicone melt or change properties under certain temperature? Cool project btw... Hope the smell is completely gone now...
BTW will epoxy work as well?
Shouldnt change properties. Its just rubber at this point. As for the smell, it would be ideal to let the silicone "air out" for a day or 2. If its trapped in the kb, it will go away slower. Epoxy would work, but thats an expensive project at this point. Who knows , I might try it out too!
@@BootSequence or for cheaper alternative try the kids magic sand (Kinetic sand)
How about instead of Elmer's glue we did some kind of epoxy resin? I know different types cure to different hardnesses so one could test if this makes any difference in sound. Most importantly, the curing process and consistency would be hugely preferable to water-based craft glue like that.
While you're at it, you might want to go ahead and get some pourable mold-making silicone lol. To be honest, I don't totally understand the point of adding corn starch. Just as a thickening agent? Was the silicone pad removable after? I imagine mold release would help.
Noted! Epoxy is expensive though. So this would be a very " Because I wanted to try it" Kind of video.
@@BootSequence Oh yeah for sure. That's a good point. I was thinking more as a follow-up on that experiment now that we know it works. I would be curious to try it myself.
Big fan of the channel by the way. You have such a clean design aesthetic. Underrated IMO
@@DaimyoD0 Yeah, I was thinking for the follow up too! With credits to you of course. Also thanks! I'm doing my best to try out new content these days!
okay so stock= 100% noise
tape mod= 100% noise +0.5% additional sidenoise
gluemod= 65% noise.
i'd scrap the tapemod entirely and stick to the glue one
This was hard to watch. I guess the elevator didn't go to the top floor on this one.
I'm sorry, what are you reffering to?
I might try silicon mod on some key caps or why not fill in the chassis with resin
good idea to try on my next video! this time properly with ventilation and all!
@@BootSequence Just be aware that resin will be more permanent and it has very different acoustic qualities. It will reflect sound more and absorb much less than other similarly dense, but more forgiving (compressible) substances, such as the silicone you already used. Imagine knocking on a slab of cured resin vs a slab of the goo you stuffed in your kb. =)
of course. Resin is much harder. But the acoustic properties of resin might make an interesting sound !@@Theorica
@@BootSequence I did not think of that! Was stuck on muting it. Got it! =)
melted lead should do the trick
after a few weeks, no more keyboard concerns... or concerns in general. 💀
instead of elmer's glue / white glue, i would use glue sticks.
It's next on the list according to the comments suggestions! Between the metal plate and the PCB to be exact. Should eliminate ping from ANY keyboard if the theory/intuition sounds right.
Not glue… liquid rubber will not reduce volume as much.
You working full time or what?
Yeah, I actually for for hardwarecanucks. I do testing and stuff for them. This is just my personal side channel!
You could do a spray lubricant assuming they are linear switches. Think wd40 but actually a lubricant. It's the quick and dirty way to lube switches. Biggest issue you'll probably run into is getting a consistent spray into each switch.
superlube
it will ruin your keyboard and high chances it will make your switches not work
Find a keyboard that makes a lot of ping sounds & try out some different mods to see what works best to stop the ping. I really could have used such a video three months ago when I got my MageGee.
The redragon actually has a lot of ping. Its still there after the mod. If I am able to capture the ping, I'll try a mod for that next!
@@BootSequence 👍 It didn't come through on my speakers, so I presumed there wasn't much ping. Hopefully any audio engineers in the audience have some good recommendations for you.
Edit: The ping comes through pretty well on headphones.
good! I actually couldnt hear it at all because I use studio monitors. Good to know!
dynamat would make a killing in the keyboard market
Thanks for the idea!
Use "goop" in the key caps.
Where have you been? We miss you bro
I'll be back I guess. Bro, CZcams is hard 😂
Other than your discomfort, this was hilarious. Your new keyboard sounds like it's had its manhood cut off!. 😅 I didn't the US had French on its product packaging.
Im from canada, Quebec, so that explains it! 😂
Oh, and the sound. definitely the definition of clacky.
Hey i remember you 🤣🤣
If anyone wants to try the silicon do yourself a favor and go to a hobby store and pick up a silicone kit for making molds
the objective was cheapness. Hobby store silicone is at least 4x more expensive than this.
@@BootSequence I meant for anyone trying to copy that mod at home. It'll be more expensive but the end product will be nicer and a lot cleaner.
@@VetBodGaming once again a 5$ tube of silicone an 2$ tub of corn starch is way cheaper than hobby grade silicone. These kits will run you about $40... My attempt cost me $7 with no experience for a $35 keyboard.
instead of Elmers glue you should try epoxy or hot glue. - at your own risk of course
all this mess and the thing sounds same before n after
objectively, it doesn't.
