This old veteran cannot listen to this great classic without having an emotional moment or a tear or two. Memorial Day is coming up soon, here in America. I served from 1966 til 1969. Many soldiers came home to nothingness , many never came home. All our well laid plans prior to serving were totally changed , but our love and our hearts remained in tact. We were just kids who had to adjust and start our lives over. God Bless the Aussie 3rd Brigade. You were and are special in my heart and mind.

I've seen you three time in four years." At that time the war was over, for me. All I see is chaos and madness......every day, Has been so for many years. More than you probably know. Stay safe.

My twin daughters found out on Friday the 4th of November 2022 that their best friend Seth committed suicide in his back yard. At 19 he had his whole future ahead of him, charitable, nice to a fault and handsome. He was paying of his first house, worked hard and we all loved him, I even called him my mate. We used to listen all the same music for Gods sake. There was no sign that he was contemplating this, even had plan to go to Good Things with my daughters in December. As I sat around consoling my daughters and their friends while drinking my sadness away, this song comes up in my feed and it felt so right, like a sign from God himself.
I heard this song many times over the decades but that day last week, these lyrics hit me like a thunderbolt and now I'll never be able to play this song without seeing him. Once this war is over, we'll keep going starting a new chapter in our lives without him. But no one will ever steal the love he gave to my daughters and he will remain forever in our hearts.
Please, if you're in bad place and don't think you can make it, just remember there are people out there who will grieve for you. Talk to someone, there is no shame in feeling this way, reach out and share the burden and you will find a way to break free from that chain. We can't do this world alone.
No matter how dark it gets in life, there is always a sunrise not far away.
We will all miss you very much Seth.

Thank you so much for sharing this story. I am a retired counselor married to a military psychiatrist and I always tell him that the people most likely to commit suicide are not the ones who say they want to do it. It's those who keep everything inside, and it takes those close to them to notice that there is something wrong. I concur with you in asking people to please talk to someone. You don't just kill yourself; you tear the lives of those you love apart. If you think for whatever reason that your life doesn't matter, at least think about those who love you. Would you want to hurt them? No. Hurting yourself is hurting them, sometimes irreparably. There is nothing wrong with asking for help or even just talking to someone when you don't know what you feel but you know something isn't right. There is always hope as long as you are alive.

Indeed, unlike Lennon and McCartney whose voices you could ALWAYS tell who was singing which harmony, sometimes I can't tell who is singing which parts when Ian And Jimmy really nail their harmonies. We're very lucky to have had this band....

      Kia Ora Anna,
I don't think anyone forgets that fact that so many innocent people died during this tragic war.
Yes the song is about what happened from an Australian soldiers perspective BUT comments weren't made regarding the rights, wrongs and horrors committed during this conflict.
The comments are about the SONG and the magical words, beat and performance - which is brilliant.
Many songs are about sad events in History - Paint it Black, I don't like Mondays and the list goes on.. and it is no disrespect to those who were involved.
Actually, maybe getting drunk and appreciating these songs is not a bad way to enjoy them ..... because we all know the meaning behind them.
I appreciate your comments and wish you a very Merry Xmas.
      Big Jim (NZ)

I think maybe we should just agree to disagree.
I appreciate and respect the fact that you obviously have strong feelings about this subject and i have no right to judge you.
Some people just enjoy the music because they like the music and don't think too much about the subject matter ...... I respect this fact ....whilst others think it is inappropriate......and i also respect their view.
I hope you don't feel too offended that others may not see things the way you do.......but in life....everyone has the right to enjoy music for different reasons.
Like i said before, i wish you and your Whanau (family) a very merry Xmas............. JIm.

Not just America, Britain too . I backpacked through Australia and New Zealand in the early 90s and soon came to realise how good the music was . And all Britain really got in music sales was Jason Donavon and Kylie. Crowed House are probably the only quality group that done well. Most of the UK don't even realise John Farnham had more than one song 😂

She was having the time of her life, who knows what sort of life she's had that she got so emotional in a concert, he probably left her scarred for life after that. Nasty alcoholic.

WOW..................i just have 3 major comments to make.
    1. To those who worry/comment about the 'thumbs down' to this song ..........Don't........you do NOT have to justify this song in any way. We know what a classic it is and how it re-ignites those 'old school' memories, in a time much forgotten and what it truly means to us. And in the end, that is all that matters.
    2. In talking about 'old school memories'..........and those who appreciate will truly understand.........It takes us back to a time when life was so much simpler. Our biggest worry was what to wear on Saturday night to impress the ladies. We lived from payday to payday and our most stressful moment was.........would our favourite song be number 1 on the weekly countdown.
    3. It is our escape from what total crap the world is now in.......................hatred, pandemic, global warming and prejudice.......something we dont understand and shake our heads at ...............what went wrong!!!!
This music is our 'escape' our 'salvation' and one of the few things that still bring a tear to the eye....and we wonder .......if only.................
So in being totally honest..................screw you - who dare to even try to take these moments from us and try to disrespect the few things that bring us so much joy.
    you

I think a lot people mistake this for a song about war, however it's actually about the break down of a marriage and eventual divorce... Cold Chisel was known for their songs about contemporary Australian culture, something no other Australian band has ever really done. Divorce was a dirty word in our country up until the mid 70s - early 80s. This is what this a song is about.

saw Ian moss in glasgow - in a place called stereo. loved every minute, and he spoke to me for about 40 minutes after the gig. Damn Ian you made my absolute childhood. I met the whole band in Glasgow a few years before. imagine standing outside the o2 in glasgow and your the only aussie surrounded by the whole band - i think i almost pissed myself
