    Interesting to note that even though the process looks inefficient, at this time Reliant were in profit every year, while BL were losing about a million pounds a week.

    Great documentary,I knew they built their own bodies and engines,never knew they also built their own gearboxes,interiors,chassis or built GRP mouldings for others

      Not sure they had the expertise to design a gearbox or an engine from scratch, they were given the rights, drawing etc. to build the Austin 7 engine. I assume they designed an aluminium version of the Austin 7 engine and modded it to OHV for the later Regal, Robin & Rialto (exact info. is hard to come by). I believe that the main running gear for the Scimitar GTE was all Ford. Sorry to sound so negative!

    • @x66Hawk66x
      @x66Hawk66x Před rokem +1

      @@Martindyna The gearbox was Reliant own design, the early side valve engines were based on the Austin 7 engine, but the OHV Alloy engine was not the same as the Austin engine in any respect, except is uses the same concept like any engine. the Scimitar used a ford engine and gearbox, but the Robins and Rialtos used Reliant's own engine witch is loosely based on SC standard cash iron engine . they had the expertise, to develop engines. Reliant produced the first All alloy engine mast produced of it's type, and even before the Hillman imp. Reliant biggest expertise was in building fiberglass cars, they even taught Lotus and TVR how to build fibreglass cars, they built the Ford RS200 rally cars on behalf of ford. Reliant were far from inept.

    Boils down to the fact that it’s target market has died out, ie northern factory or pit men who wanted to travel the 3 to 5 miles to their place of work without getting wet through on the Honda 90. Should have moved on with the times .

      @@arfanmedni7294 4 wheels is boring though. There are loads of 4 wheel cars so it wouldn’t have stood out as much. The kitten was a 4 wheel version of the robin but didn’t sell nowhere near as many as the robin or Rialto.

    Wacky British company. Factory on BOTH sides of the main road, they had to take the half finished cars over the road to the other factory. Road testing was done on the public roads [as seen in the video], no test tracks for Reliant..a sad loss. I had 1 Supervan,1 Regal,2 Robins and a Scimitar GTE in the day.
