  • In this video I have a look at a customers 2016 Chevy 2500HD Denali with the big 6.6 that has a customer complaint of no horn. I think they built the truck around the horn 🙄 Let's have a look.

I remember with the old glass fuses, we would screw with newbies by taping 1 end with transparent tape and sticking it back in the fuse terminal block. The newbie would look at the glass and see it was not blown and move right by it in troubleshooting. Same principle. Had to make sure the coffee mug didn't leave my sight for a few days afterwards once they found out for fear of them adding a special ingredient to it

As a live sound engineer, that DeoxIt is like gold. We get scratchy pots(potentiometers) all the time, especially here in the muggy south where average humidity is 80%, and that stuff has saved me more times than I can count. I once was asked to bring in a loaner Midas mixer, while the client got theirs repaired. Knowing that’s it’s otherwise the finest gear available, I figured it was just dirty. Living in a bar/restaurant, especially back when smoking was legit, wreaks havoc on electronics. After pulling every knob off the mixer I emptied an entire can of DeoxIT into every place with a moving electrical part, and ran signal through it for 24+ hours. Wiped it down, put the knobs and fader handles back on, she was 100%, previously looking at a $1000+ repair or a $5000 replacement. Less than $10 and some time, and Midas was reborn! Gold I tell ya, gold!

Back in my work training at the repair shop of a local hospital, we had access to used (and autoclaved) "root canal files" or whatever those might be called, from the dentistry department. Those were handy for rubbing corrosion and debris out of small connectors as well as other small crevices. A less abrasive replacement might be a plastic bristled toothpick for cleaning the small pockets between the gum and two adjacent teeth.

A long time ago a 15 year old had just bought an old Chevy, and the horn didn't work. Through my excelent detective/diagnostic skills I located both horns in plain sight on the front side of the radiator support, and determined that the connector had fallen off the tang. When I plugged it back in I found out why it had been unplugged, and gouged my scalp on the hood release...turns out the spring behind the horn button had failed, so the button was making continuous contact.

I thought that when the windshield washer pump died on my '15 Sierra 1500, replacement would be a quick & easy given the size of the engine compartment. Unfortunately, the tank is located right behind the horn and is buried under enough crap that just getting to it is damned near impossible. Once you clear enough room to get to the pump connector, actually removing the tank requires even more random disassembly. What used to be a 15 minute job back in the day has morphed into a three hour tour full of pain and suffering. Thanks, GM!

so back in the 90s when i worked for GM we would look in the glove box or trunk of vehicles for the list of RPO's from time to time, I ran across a code on a Chevrolet truck(don't remember the code) but the code translated into something on the lines of "Chevrolet conversion", in other words it was a GMC to Chevrolet conversion. i recognize they are the same vehicles with different badges... just wanted to share, take it however you like i have no skin in this game

Eric that prank description brings back memories of my training days. We had one clown who would mess up the test circuits we'd built whilst we were off getting an instructor to view our progress. I fixed him with a very high voltage / low amperage circuit that he touched just once, grin.

4 drops! That’s like $100 of that stuff!
I get absolutely paranoid anytime I get a bad connection. When I see corroded connectors, I think about why they got that way. These are not supposed to get wet inside, so if that red tab was clicked, the connector might be put together wrong, defective, or damaged. I just fixed the air bag acceleration sensors on a Benz and noticed that the one connector had a small cut in the gasket, which invited the green crusties in even though the connector was clipped in securely. Sure, the new sensor worked, but by February it will be dead unless I make it saltwater-proof, which is why I end up replacing lots of these gaskets and have cases of things like electrical grease, liquid tape/Scotchkote, and cosmoline on hand to seal and coat everything I can as if it was going to be sailing between here and the Vineyard for the next ten years. The car makers seem to think connectors just want to unplug themselves and put a lot of design effort in making them impossible to disconnect without going full ape on them, but they underestimate the ability of salt to get into every nook and cranny and dissolve stuff from within and these gaskets and wire seals they use are too often not doing the job.
