- In this video I have a look at a ladies Chrysler Town and Country that has the big 4.0 in it. Her complaint was that it is hard to get it started and when you do it smells really strong of gas. It also has an engine light on with a ton of codes. Let's have a look.
-Enjoy!

Going to guess N/L = no leak. I bet this lady was happy the fix was relatively inexpensive. Great job as usual Mr. O!
I couldn't sleep down here in NC, and I am rewarded with a Saturday morning show with THE Mr O! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I miss NC, where the cars don't rust! All hail Chatham County NC!
This is the highest value channel I've yet to run across. Not only do I learn from your problem solving logic and your parts/procedures tips, but you also manage to explain what components are involved and how they interact. It's been a long time since I turned a wrench, but it is still really enjoyable to watch your process.
I had a long crank and smell of gasoline so strong that I got out and looked under the vehicle. My wife had run over a tree limb in the driveway and cracked the plastic fuel line. That also explained the fuel gauge dropping so fast.
Amazing how one sensor can affect a lot of other systems. Mr. Eric has so much experience. Great to see a real tech at work.
This shows how invaluable a good scanner with all of the functions are.
And knowing how to interpret the data.
Agreed and more importantly The wisdom to use the scanner and The discernment to comprehend it and act appropriately
A good scanner is useless unless you have a good mechanic using it!

Kinda like diamond cutter it’s not just the tools but the hands on the tools
OR it's a code reader and the parts cannon ! That code reader can get expensive in a hurry !
The comedic "Enhance. Enhance." Harrison Ford in Bladerunner impression as Eric zooms in the camera never fails to make me smile. :)
That's a Super Troopers reference, Sir.
You've done it again Mr. O. Where's my coffee? What a great way to start the weekend. I'm going to repair my fuel line. Break out the swear bucket! Have a great day.
Eric, I think the proper technical term for this Chrysler condition is ' Factory Fresh'. 😉🤣
Experience definitely counts in this situation. I also say she got maybe a year or so then she can pull it into Wilberts.
It looks like the owner of that car is in a position where she needs to squeeze every penny of use from it. I wish her luck. At least these repairs were relatively minor.
yeah I have an 06 T&C, they are money pits. the interior is now falling apart. egr valve is crap on the 3.8, I've replaced it 2x. I've fixed thermostat leaks, radiator leaks, alternator, distributer unit and wires, etc, etc, etc. this T&C is the main reason I bought a XTools D7 scanner. i put more hours into T&C than I do my 3 other cars combined. finally have enough money to replace it altogether.
With cars being crazy expensive right now and with how fast they rot out in NY, I’d be squeezing every penny out of my cars too.
@@orbitalair21032006, that is 18 years old😂. Either keep throwing parts at it or walk away
Agree! Blessings to the owner! I've slayed 3 deers and 3 automobiles at the same time(it's a skill).. I wish this on no one.
I bought one of these POS for $1,000 paid another another thousand to have an engine put in it and so far so good other than it's got an axle vibration on the passenger side which I'll be dealing with here in the next couple of weeks but yes all I can learn about this vehicle will be a most help to me in the future what to look for and what not to do
Its smart enough to know there is a problem with coolant temp sensor ............but not smart enough to NOT use it for for its fueling strategy, unless it goes open circuit then it substitutes a value.
Great video as always thanks very much
Yep. It’s odd they haven’t gotten around to making it smart enough to ignore the sensor when it gets enough outside the window to set the code.
Exactly my thoughts, stupid software design.
It forces people to take it in for service.
I once encountered this condition on a 1991 Tacoma with a small head gasket leak. The coolant temperature sensor was at the high point in the engine and when it developed a coolant bubble around the sensor, it would stick in cold start mode.
3am upload... Well I'm still awake, why not.
Me too , hahaha 😆 😂 🤣 😅 😄 😜 😆 😂
True that......
Same here - night shift at the cruise ships in Alaska
must be on a timer ⏲️
It's 3 hrs later in New York
My grandpa had a temp coolant sensor cause a nightmare of issues on a 1989 s-10 pickup back 30 years ago. The s-10 would do all the same that van did plus go right into a super high idle when it did finally start. Damn coolant sensors!
Looking forward to another great video Mr O !! Glad you ran it past Mrs O :-)
Hopefully this van can live several more years for this family.
All that valvetrain noise is not a good sign.
it's what they do. it'll do that for 100K+

shes rotted under there pretty good. The crusher is where its going in another year or two.
That ESIM switch connector is the exact same as the 6.6 Duramax fuel injectors which have a constant failure at teh corner cylinders. You can get those for cents on the dollar from amazon. Those connectors (oem and amazon) are a tyco clone...ordering the actual tyco terminals is the long term fix...because ive even had them fail soon after replacement with the cheap oem and the amazon pigtails. If you ever have one of each side by side....brand new the tyco has an incredible amount of tension compared to the others.
Also...are the 4.0 and the 3.6 the same block just different bore/stroke?? I swear I have changed that exact sensor but don't recall ever working on the 4.0....but have worked on more 3.6's than one person should.
Tool & Die maker for 30 years with AMP/Tyco the test we used was insertion & extraction can't remember numerical range but they were tested hundreds of times in lab to see if they were in the correct value range. Cheap knock-offs from offshore fail almost immediately.
It's amazing what the coolant temp sensor does when an engine's hot and the sensor says it's cold.
You definitely have that ESIM system figured out.
Good one Mr. O, nice to see Mrs. O., and the kitty.
Of course we learned something! Another great diagnosis and soooo glad your shop supervisor came out to check on you not asleep!
Early video today. You are by far my favorite and best diagnostic mechanic on this platform
How did the Deer which was clobbered not HEAR it coming...??
How valuable is it to know after some decades of working on Chrysler's that you need to order a leak detector pump for a simple ESIM switch. THANK YOU for offering valuable info that the neophyte couldn't
Mr O says it all the time: “What we expect to see.” If you don’t know what to expect, how do you know what you’re looking at? That is a major part of trouble shooting.
About ordering parts, I sometimes had to look up numbers and order by manufacturer part number to get parts that were "not listed" at the parts store. When you're dealing with a mid-year revision, you sometimes have to order the previous or following MY to get the right part.
My family had a 99.5 Pathfinder, I had to look up what changes took place for that half year update when ordering parts. Luckily, it was fairly reliable so not too much work was needed on it.
Thanks Eric, The Dash was saying gascap so they try to spell out a common problem to the non mechanically inclined. You forgot to say enhance when the esim switch was tested! . Have a relaxing weekend!
We call cars like that in Michigan a "beater". You keep beating it until it will no longer go.
In the military, we called them a beater with a heater.
Great video, as always, Eric! We'll be leaving for a 4,000-5,000 mile vacation trip in a few days. We'll be driving...you guessed it...a 2010 T&C with 160K+ on the clock. I thought I better watch this in case I have a rich start issue & can't find a good mechanic. I always learn & always enjoy your content. Blessings to you & your family!
I enjoy the scanner vids Eric i never learned that stuff now im older and paying for it as i dont know how to use them been messing with vehicles since the 90s at back woods mom & pops shops or farms
Great job Mr. O.
Some times we just keep these automobiles going ,just to get by. Like how understanding you are, many people including mechanics forget the struggle. 😊
Should've did a tuneup and seafoam 😅. See.. what you have to do is put the seafoam in the gas and intake 1st then oil. Trust me bro. The trick is to use 1 can though and put oem plugs in
Mike Becker’s teaching skills are phenomenal. Super nice guy, too!
It has a lot of issues but you have fixed the main problem now it's just a matter of running drive cycle for the computer to normalize at least in that respect
Love Your stuff!!! Keep teaching and I'll keep learning!!! Remember, if you can do it, so can I!!! Thanks again Mr. O!!!
Congratulations on another 1000 subscribers!
I hope CZcams is paying you well!
Town & Country was the Upscale Chrysler Model for the Grocery Getter and Grandkid Getter back in the Day. I once drove a New Grand Caravan on Vacation. Was Smooth.
I love my Town and Country! Like you said, the ride is very smooth.
Best videos on CZcams, I always learn something! Thanks Eric!
Hey Eric, I don’t think you need any advise but we use Deoxit D5 on our aircraft connectors when we think they need a tad of cleaning. Work very very on the green crusty plugs. Usually if they that bad we replace them..hey you’re the best, enjoy your show. Tell Miss O, HEY!
I keep a can of D5 around when I need to do some electrical cleaning. I'm pretty sure Eric pulls his can out occasionally also.
Perfect day to have SMA first thing in the mornin! Have a great weekend!!
God bless~
Eric,
Great video - thank you.
She drove 7500 miles with the CEL on!

I have a 2012 Just Empty Every Pocket, 3.6L Pentastar engine. The rattle I just fixed with mine was the water pump. It has 105k on the odometer, so it also got a new belt per maintenance schedule. I know about the predecessor 3.7L V6 issues and nothing about 4.0L V6 issues, but the 3.6L Pentastar is a solid running engine. It is just annoying to work on sometimes and engineering could've used much better parts. An oil filter assembly housing made of plastic? 🤦♂️
Thank you. You really splaine yourself quite well.
Had a 6.4 powerstroke come in with a complaint of when towing the temp gauge would suddenly peg hot and start defueling. The coolant temp sensor had a bad spot and anything over normal non loaded temp would read full hot, worked fine from cold up to that spot.
As a NAPA employee, the wrong listing for the EISM switch is annoying. A lot of people call it a vent valve.
I have always found ur videos veery educational no matter what ur working on . Thanks for all ur hard work
I had a similar but opposite situation with a Ford explorer a while back. Intake air temp on a cold engine, on a 60 degree day was reading 110 degrees. Vehicle would not start in cool weather.
Awsome job, thanks for bringing us along.
Nice video as usual. My friend from Alabama was visiting. When he said the coffee maker was plugged up we thought he meant clogged up!!!
Always informative and entertaining to watch Mr. Eric diagnose a problem with a vehicle. Thanks Eric for your content i always learn something.
Great video and informative! Can’t think of a better way to start my day! 👍🏻👍🏻
That Autel is one amazing unit
I get something out of all your videos. Even if it ain't mechanical. Thanks, Eric.
Hi Eric:
I have told you more then once that I love your diagnostic direct approach. This time I would like to give you an "ATTABOY!" for the way you and your wife get allng. It is wonderful to see how you compliment eachother. Give her a big hug for me and always thank God that you have such a wonderful person as your wife!!
All your videos are valuable. You tell exactly what, how to do job. There are so many things on the computer control on these vehicles one problem can fix other problems or like you said could be other things to. Thanks for the video
Mopar plastic factory coolant sensors are junk. I had a 2009 Jeep liberty limited. Sensor went bad, broke off when taking it out cause the plastic hardened within the threads of intake. Absolute pain! Great video
I had a new one that went wonky after a week. Except it was reporting warm when the vehicle was cold. So we had no high idle when it was cold and the gauge showed that it was warm even with a ambient of 45 after sitting all night.
I'm back a tad early on my rounds here on CZcams village. I belong to so many channels that it usually takes me 5 months to circle back to all my automotive stuff, but still fighting this nerve disease, and some days are harder than others, need a mood boost and work my mind so I often find myself coming back to SMA. If I wasn't married, and inflicted by a nerves disease, I see about getting a job in a little sleepy NY farming community, surly you'd hire a once ASE Mechanic with 40 years under his belt. Hell, fo peace of mind I'd work for free. Wait a minute, I do that now. Lol oh well, guess I'll stick around for the humor and mysteries. Thanks for bringing us along. Helps some of more ways than one. ❤
You just keep getting better Eric. Thanks
Good job! Thanks for bringing us along.
I could smell the gas at 04:25 or so. I could actually hear it too! 🤪🤣
error P00 - buttcrack, small leak detected
Great job, very interesting. Thanks for the OBD lessons, really helpful.
I love all your videos. I'm trying to catch up from the beggining. I always learn from your videos. Thanks Keep up the great work.
Awesome job, thanks for all you do. Scan tools are invaluable! Stay safe and God bless
Another excellent video. Thank you.
Good diagnosing Eric Holmes !!!!! Nice to show the part in the box, its numbers, what it looks like out of the box before you install it, and where it is located on the vehicle, and the proper way to install it with Eric's tips and Me-Maw's advice !!!!!!! Well done !!!!! Saw Luna scoot by quickly, must of been dinner time !!!!!! 😸
I learn something new every time. Thanks Mr. O.
Been watching your show for awhile now. Love your show. I learn alot. Thank you from San Diego
Mrs. O is always a pleasant sight on your videos. She is easy on the eyes. You are a lucky man.
I just want to thank you i enjoy watching you I thank you for being so knowledgeable and explaining things
It's 3.10 here in california , Eric you are at 6.10 a.m. on the east coast , don't you ever take a day off ????? Hahaha , love your channel !!!!!!!!!
Video uploads can be scheduled just like emails, text messages, etc. Now if it was some single guy's channel, then yeah it might be manually uploaded at that time lol
Always nice to see Mrs. O.
Great video! Your experience shows. 👍
Thanks for the video Eric.
Don't have this application but fun to watch, thank you
Great diag!! I like how you give out other websites for more indepth information. You are a good man Mr. O!!
Nicely done !
Nice video. Launch works a lot better than Autel on the chrysler evap tests. I usually keep both scanners handy for different makes. You said you have OEM which is even better.
Cool video Mr. O! You are a very good mechanic with good scan tools!
I certainly enjoy and understand your explanation. Thanks ck wisc.
great catch Eric. You know after a while of working on these vehicles right where to start looking by the codes and symptoms.
I always learn something new. Thanks for sharing 🤤
I get something out of every one of your videos. That small little detail might make all the difference in a diagnosis or repair. You're the Man Eric!
Morning! Eric! Thanks for the momma van edition!
Great video today. Really enjoyed it. Kindest regards 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Cool.
Plug it up - Jake makes some awesome videos. Really sharp dude.
18:12 Looks like Mike at GoTech has a few evap vids, here's one people could search "EVAP - Chrysler / Dodge - Operation and testing of EVAP leak detection systems; LDP, NVLD, ESIM"
More useful information! Thanks for sharing... 🙂
Great work
T pins in the hat! Tricks of the trade. 😄
Great Job !
Thanks my guy😊
I learn more stuff from you and channels like Mike's, then do from anything else.
I need a garage for filming! (so I can produce more content, like the X3 2.8ix that I'm replacing the starter in...)
Thank you for the video
Chrysler Thunder
I've used a shop vac connected to one of the fittings on a home hot water heater to prevent water from draining. Might be able to do the same on the coolant overflow tank when replacing coolant sensors to prevent coolant loss.
Hello south main auto great video brother keep up the hard work. Can you make a video on 2014 Toyota Camry hybrid fixing a small coolant leak issue.
Brilliant Eric
That 4.0 sounds like shaking rocks in a metal Coffee can on camera 😂 Eric O 12:35 @South Main Auto Repair LLC
👍 another fine job
Nice work !
