Hey buddy, I needed this reaction today. The revelation you had during Candle in the Wind, the emotion in your face, and the sudden need to get facts on this masterpiece before going any further really touched my heart. I was in tears from there till the end of the reaction knowing a beautiful young man like you was experiencing and feeling great art before my eyes. Maybe there is still hope for the world.
There are still a few young'uns out there who give us hope.
100% yes!! This is impactful to myself in ways deeply beyond words. Elton was THE foundation to my own life now being what it is (you can see that buried among some vids on my own channel). And I appreciate your recognizing this young man's beauty! Indeed!! Much love to all. Without that, life is senseless! 💞
Elton also did a version of "Candle in the wind" when Princess Diana passed away. He changed the lyrics to "Goodbye England's Rose". Elton and Diana were very close friends, and he played the song at her funeral. It's a very powerful and emotional performance. You might want to give it a listen. May she RIP. 😢🇬🇧🥀
Bernie changed the lyrics.
It remains to this day the best selling single ever, in Billbaord's history. Pretty significant, and worth EVERYone knowing, I'd say! 😊

@@SteveFarmerMusicyep, I was only a teen when she died and that version came out, but I vividly remember it being the only single where people were literally buying multiple copies just to gift friends and family. I think my mom owned at least 4 or 5 copies herself between cassettes and cds, and I know I owned a couple as well lol
Candle in the wind is exquisite. Bernie Taupin's lyrics are so poignant and Elton delivers them beautifully and composed a lovely melody for them. I want to mention the production of this album by Gus Dudgeon. I think it still sounds fresh and crisp even to our 21st century ears. I also want to say how glorious the harmonies are provided by the guitarist, bassist and drummer. They add so much to the drama of this song.
Good choice, Silas... Just a note: Love-lies-bleeding is a type of flower, goes well with funeral...
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is nothing short of a roller coaster. Your reaction is spot on.
One of the best openings to an album by anybody. It completely draws you in with Funeral for a Friend and blows your socks off with the impassioned Love Lies Bleeding. Bernie Taupin is so, so good at lyrics and Elton John is one of the greatest composers of all time. I went to see him live at an open air concert and he started the show with this. It was absolutely incredible. The crowd went wild. I had to pause your reaction just to say this. Glad you're loving it man!
One mustn't forget the massive contribution of Dave Hentschel on synths on that track particularly.
But when the piano chords kick in, you know that's pure Elton.
The album is a MONSTER up there with the best of the 70,s albums by any artist in that era ..❤❤
Yes that’s Elton’s falsetto. When he was young he had a huge range. One of the best pop rock singers ever.
Candle in the Wind is SO moving. Watch the clip of Elton performing this song, with different lyrics, at Princess Diana’s funeral. Gut wrenching.
FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND / LOVE LIES BLEEDING is a clasic to this day and he plays it at his concerts .
Funeral/Love is at a level occupied by few artists or groups; Stairway to Heaven, Freebird, On the Turning Away, Hey Jude, Good Vibrations, Stormy Monday. Regardless of one's favorite genre everyone will recognize the brilliance of these and others extended singles.
The song Benny and the Jets was used in a movie called Aloha Bobby and Rose.
Right back to 1973, Freshman in H.S. Incredible album!
I don’t know what that means but in Australia I was in form 1, my first year of high school. So many memories that I had forgotten how wonderful it was!!
@@karenglenn6707 Same apparently. Freshman (1st), Sophomore (2nd), Junior (3rd) and Senior (4th and final).
@@g.e.5723 oh thank you for that. We do 6 years at high school before going to University so what do you call those please? So we do 7 years at primary school before high school. In sixth form, now called year 12, we do VCE, and our VCE score can often determine which university and degree we can choose to do. Cheers for the info 👍
@@karenglenn6707
Starting with "Kindergarten" then to "Grammar School", (grades 1 through 5), on to "Middle School", (Grades 6,7 & 8), then to High School for Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12.
That ended the "required" Education of our citizens.
Pursuing higher education was a choice.
High School is (generally) completed at age 18.
@@g.e.5723 we have kinder but that is separate from primary school. After kinder, we start Prep at school and stay there until the end of grade 6 and that is the 7 years at primary school. Then on to high school, a separate school again. There are some where the primary and high school are all based together but that is not common here. Thanks for, explaining, I’ve always wondered as if you say that to an Aussie or a Pom it means nothing to us as we don’t use those descriptions of seperate years at school. As it is, when I was in high school it was called Form 1, Form 2, etc. But for my son it was called year 7 instead of Form 1, so when I talk about my high school years he gets very confused 😂
I’ll never forget the day I tore the cellophane off the album and placed it gently on the turntable - my Pioneer SX 1010 receiver with Bose 901 speakers about to amaze and thrill me! Sophomore year at Gannon College in Erie, Pa.
Marilyn's real name was Norma Jean Baker. I vaguely remember when she passed away; I was a little kid.
Bennie and the Jets was recorded in the studio with the live effects added, so, not live.
A few other albums worth listening to from start to finish would be Running On Empty by Jackson Browne, Hotel California by the Eagles and Against the Wind by Bob Seger.
Love your enthusiasm Silas. Love Lies Bleeding. One of my favorite Elton songs. Grey Seal is another amazing song. It is indeed Marilyn Monroe. Real name Norma Jean Baker.
Grey Seal is a winner
If you were into rock and roll and you owned a turntable in the seventies, you owned this album. Simple as that. It plays almost like an Elton John greatest hits album part 1... That's how popular so many of the songs off of it became. "Bennie and the Jets" had to have been one of the most played songs on the radio of the 70s. You had the song coming out your ears. Couldn't get away from it. It's not live, it's about a make-believe band called 'Benny and the Jets'. All the crowd noises you hear are just recorded effects for the song. All done in studio.
Mom had his first three albums in her amazing collection. I was spoiled musically if nothing else
@@Prone2Thrill Empty Sky, Elton John and Tumbleweed Connection.
@@Prone2Thrillme too, my mom is the reason I have the deep musical tastes I have. I was born in 85, my mom had a huge record collection throughout the 70’s and passed down her musical tastes to me. I was raised on classic rock, artists like Elton, Billy Joel, Springsteen, and many more. I wish I was around in that era, but I’m grateful that the music is still going strong and still being passed down generation to generation.
Two amazing movies with Marilyn are "Some Like It Hot" and "Seven Year Itch". I've heard people say "she can't act", but I beg to differ. I am in awe of her talent.
I freakin love you, kid! You so get into whatever you've watching, and you don't shy away from being authentic. A lot of people don't jump up from their chairs to dance and enjoy what they're experiencing, mores the pity, though you make me hopeful. Keep on doing what you've been doing
Like Cosmo's Factory every song on this album has something to offer. It really is one of the great ones of the seventies.
I AM SO HAPPY YOU REACTED SO WELL TO ELTON'S GYBR ALBUM! This album is my favorite of all albums in the world and Elton John is my favorite musician, vocalist, and celebrity person of all time. I am so happy I am on this planet along with Elton! Listen to more for the compositions and the production skills of blending his voice with the instruments. (A little echo here, a little reverb there, incredibly well done harmonies behind him - and sometimes with his own voice blended into the backing vocals.) The recording production value is so exceptional it actually excites me and leaves me wanting to listen again and again!
To reiterate: Two words: TINY DANCER!
YESSSSS SILAS, THAT'S ELTON! 😊 HE HAD THAT GREAT PHENOMENAL HIGH PITCH RANGE FOR A SOLID 20 YEARS ( 69-89 ) 💯😊 ENJOYYYYY SILAS! 👍
Bernie Taupin is a fantastic lyricist, as this song confirms: "The roses in the window box are tilted to one side"
Love Lies Bleeding is a blood red variety of rose.
"Love Lies Bleeding in my hands" She's gone, and he's left with dead roses.
I saw Elton live on his last tour of the US and they sound just as good, maybe better live (if that’s even possible) than the studio albums. It was so electric!!!
I got it for Christmas in 1973 from my parents. I was 14 years old. My Mom actually loved Elton as she loved piano playing and Honky Cat was one of her favorite songs. She was already in her 50's when I was a teen, but she was a "cool Mom"
Love Lies Bleeding is my very favorite Elton John song of all time! It still makes me emotional and reminds me of hearing it for the first time in 1973 when I was 13.
Silas, Elton just finished his Fairwell tour this year. He's in his 70's now. This album came out at his peak in his mid 20's. We all had it and as as a double album, (rare then), it was pricey.
Hey Silas you should check out the album cover and all the included artwork for this while you listen. Awesome music to come, some great deep cut type songs on the way! ..The Ballad of Danny Bailey, Grey Seal, Harmony, This Song Has No Title...
What a kick-off! Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is Elton's most awesome opus in his whole repertoire! Love Lies Bleeding his best rocker!
Funeral for a friend /love lies bleeding is my all time piece of music and song! Nothing better imo!
oh yea by the way... Music by Elton John, Lyrics by Bernie Taupin
“Love Lies Bleeding” is a type of flower too, so maybe a double meaning?
Elton made 10 perfect albums in 6 yrs
This is one of my favorite albums. I listened to this so much and I love all the songs. My favorite Reginald Dwight (Mr. John's birth certificate name), song is on this album, it's a deep cut titled, Harmony.
I don't know who suggested this album to you but if I ever meet this person, I'll definitely shake their hand!
Have a nice trip down the YBR, when you're done, I bet you won't tell it Goodbye! AGR
Mahalo for continuing to share your hard work 🤙😎
This is the LP that his band members finally started getting their flowers from the general public. Well deserved. Glad you looked up the meaning of "Candle..." Context is important. Great reaction Silas.
Keep in mind, most/all of EJ’s lyrics where written by his longtime lyricist partner, the great B. Taupin. Elton wrote/performed the music.
Just started watching your videos. Great reactions. Definitely recommend watching Ellon John singing at Princess Diana's funeral. Really moving performance and he did a flawless performance with the whole world watching.
I've been lucky enough to see him twice, and I cried both times.
Bernie Taupin later said that the song Candle In The Wind could have been about anyone who died young, such as Jim Morrison or Montgomery Clift but they chose to dedicate it to Marilyn Monroe and later rewrote it for Princess Diana.
I have this on yellow vinyl :) Its a great album.
Your reaction moved me to tears well done matey
This is great! I had never listened to this album like this. I had heard many of the songs by themselves. One thing I learned is that Elton was more progy and experimental than I realized.
Go back to Empty Sky album. His first solo album.
Oh, I forgot. You mentioned the piano. That's all Elton. He wrote every song and is a prodigy, a born genius with the piano like mozart.
I was waiting for your reaction to this Masterpiece...
Great job reacting. Props for rewinding Candle in the Wind and re-listening. Great album I haven't heard most of it for 30 years. LOL.
NOTHING better than 70s music ... PERIOD!!!!!
Elton John is a virtuoso in every way. Amazing! You MUST listen to Honky Cat from the release Honky Chateau. You’ll get a very direct experience of Elton John’s remarkable piano playing.
I have so many fond memories, of all the albums and songs, you so enthusiastically react too. Peace!
Another icon who has stood the test of time, Reginald Dwight I believe is the given name of Elton John
Kenneth Reginald Dwight, Elton John came from Elton Dean and Long John Baldry.
@@TheMagnum60 Thanks for clearing that up
That’s Elton singing falsetto toward the end of "Bennie and the Jets."
This album is just fantastic! You'll love it, Silas....keep going!! ❤
Greatest double album in history. Don't forget that Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics.
Thank you. Elton performed the music flawlessly, but the heart and soul of Bernie Taupin is what brought the band to the forefront. Except for Funeral for a friend, which is amazing and stirs the drama of my past into a sad, heartbreaking story, I still believe that too many people steal Bernie’s moment to shine. Especially in songs like Someone saved my life tonight and Tiny dancer, as well as the three songs we listened to here.
You can spend months listening to Elton John's seventies music. He had about 6 great albums back then that were #1 on Billboard 200.
I'm glad you're checking this out, it's a great album. "Bennie and the Jets" contains sound effects that make it sound live, but it is a studio recording.
Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You Rock Silas !!!!
Sucha heartfelt reaction . You deserve elton and elton deserves fans like you
I want to see him react to "Sweet Painted Ladies", this song will grow on you...
Norma Jean Baker was Marilyn Monroe's name before she became an actress.
Thank you so much for this. I know every word on every song on this album. I was a teen in high school when this came out. Thank you
The lyrics are written by Bernie Taupin. He revealed recently that his original inspiration for the song was a young actor, Montgomery Clift, who also died tragically. But Bernie thought the Marilyn take would have a bigger public draw . . .
This album is a classic. Thanks for doing this one
Nostalgia galore!! Can't wait for next part!! 🎉
Been awhile since I stopped by Silas. Nice seeing you again. guess I'd better see what I've missed.
That is indeed Elton in Bennie! He has one of the marvellous falsettos out there in the 1970s. It's a fucking tragedy he lost it in the 80s (surgery for vocal polyps lowered the tenor of his voice considerably).
I adore your enthusiasm! I was much the same at your age.
FYI, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (a double album), was recorded and mixed in around two weeks.
Pretty damned amazing, even back then.
As an aside, Douglas Adams, the author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", once described the drummer, Nigel Olsen, on this album as sounding "like a wet Frankfurter being slapped on the bottom of a plastic bucket." He was dead right, but still, the perfect sound.
I saw this tour in 1974 in Detroit with my brother.... the whole stage was dark and the dry ice fog going.....then the ARP Synthesizer starts up and it is Funeral For a Friend! Blew me away. Chills run up your spine. I have some great pics from that concert. BTW, Benny and the Jets is not live....they added in the cheering and the crowd sounds to make it sound live. And the high voice really is Elton!
Marilyn Monroe is Disney's Tinkerbell. She's forever remembered....Candle In the Wind.
Please do "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," my favorite Elton John song. Thank you.
It’s such a beautiful song. One of my favorites as well, and that’s really saying something considering how many masterpieces he has!
EJ's lyricist Bernie Taupin recently wrote an autobiography and is beginning a book tour. I wonder if the "kid" in "Candle in the Wind" was Taupin or Elton?
Bernie Taupin.
Back in the 70's, my friends and referred to him as EFJ (Elton effing John). The talent here is unimaginable, eh? I wasn't able to see him live until well into adulthood, but to see him with his original band play Love Lies/Funeral with Davey Johnstone on guitar was otherworldly.
Marilyn performed for the troops overseas on tour with Bob Hope. As you can imagine they loved her! So much sweetness beauty and charm!
"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" really showcases her talent
Silas, have you seen the movie Rocket Man yet? I think it would help you understand what Bernie was talking about, in the lyrics.
Remember that Bernie wrote all of the lyrics, and Elton put the music to them. A majority of the songs are about Bernie's experiences in life.
My Lord, what a perfect album side.
After the Candle in the Wind reaction I'd love to see you do "Ticking"
I remember where I was and with whom in 1973 when I first heard this album. I bought it the next day. Amazing collection of music.
You went all Twenty One Pilots - Blurryface on us there for a minute😂
Adding to my original comment in someways I consider this Elton’s version of Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin . ❤❤
Thank you! Love your reaction!
Thank you for the great reaction video. Your reaction was the same one I had when I heard the opening track, the day it was released. This is a rock masterpiece, and to see your reaction mirror mine 50 years later is priceless... thanks again. You show great music appreciation !!
There are no bad songs on this double album.
Silas my boy, this came out when I was 15 and my neighborhood friends and I would play this over and over... good times. 😎
This album is also noted for a price hike of 6 dollars to 7. Caused a lot of backlash
GREAT ALBUM TY FOR REACTING!!!!TURN UR VOLUMN UP!!!!THIS WHOLE ALBUM IS A CLASSIC!!!!!I PLAYED AIR GUITAR AT 12 LOL!!!!
I love your passion, Silas.
50 freakin’ years ago
Nice channel and awesome reactions. If I could have you react to any Elton songs (besides Rocket Man of course), might I suggest 3 veritable Elton MASTERPIECES: "Indian Sunset" from Madman Across The Water - an orchestral gem, "Ticking" from Caribou - incredible lyrics, story and piano, and "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" from Don't Shoot Me...
Benny and the Jets is loosely based on the musical West Side Story a play written by Steven Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein The two gangs in the play are the Sharks and the Jets Silas if you have the chance listen to the West Side Story soundtrack and watch the movie with your gf
West Side Story was in turn inspired by Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet.
My favorite EJ song!
Been listening to this album for 50 years, my Fav. song on this Album is *I've seen that movie too* I think this album has hits and misses, for me, a guy who has every album up until like 2004 or so, his two best albums are 1.) Tumbleweed Connection and 2. Madman Across the Waters. This is probably his 3rd best album.
Thanks.. Three songs of Sir Elton John !!! ¡¡OMG!!! The rest of album is marvellouse !. Very big compositor. I love him, all this music was my live, is my live today.
This is a Gen Z story, but shows my childhood some too. The first time I ever recall hearing Benny and The Jets was when I was watching 27 Dresses (a very mom movie),but very good. Since then, it has been a playlist song and good memory I have with my mom 🤍 I always thought he said “electric boobs” not “electric boots” haha
Marilyn's birth name was Norma Jean Mortenson
You should do live versions
...after the studio versions first.
Just genius stuff from Sir Elton (his oldest stuff is my favorite).... Norma Jean went to college in the San Fernando Valley at Valley College. Such a shame that she was so alone and lost in the big bad world. Honkey Tonk Chateau / Capt. Fantastic
I actually got the sheet music for Bennie & the Jets in the summer of '74 in Arkansas of all places! lol. Spent the next year trying to learn it. The opening chords are actually pretty wide. taking up about a full octave. My hands could barely reach them.. Not sure why Elton wrote it that way because his hands aren't all that large either. Regardless. Bennie and the Jets is a killer wierd-ass song1
Amen brother
