She doesn't need gold, she already had it in her heart.

When I was 18 I was training in Denver Colorado. Janet Lynn came to the rink to skate. I have been on the ice with many skating championships. Janet Lynn is the only skater I've ever seen skate a full hour session without one break. And to top it off she was beautiful delicate and brilliant the whole time.
    I cherish that moment.
    A true champ. God bless.

I was a young skater in the era of Janet Lynn, and have always loved her skating. I don't mean for this to sound controversial or nasty, but why did she not work harder to improve her school figures - this might have helped her in the international standings ? Instead even with the new short program guideline, it was not enough to make up for lesser results in the school figures.
It does not really matter more than 50 years later, but if the archer can not hit the mark , we do not move the mark; instead we improve the sight.

She did work extremely hard on perfecting the school figures, going so far as to train under Pierre Brunet, one of the experts in the field. However, school figures are an art unto themselves requiring a certain inate talent or skill that some if us simply don't possess. Janet also had the misfortune to skate at the same time as Trixie Schuba, probably the greatest exponent of figures in the history of the sport. Trixie amassed such a commanding lead in the figures that it was almost impossible for Janet (or anyone else) to catch her.

In Janet's time there were academic "school figures," complicated tracings on the ice to begin the competition. If one was good at the figures they could build up a big lead before the free skate began. Janet was never very good at the school figures, and that is why she did not do as well against others who were excellent at school figures while not being that good at the free skate.

And your reward Janet when you’re standing before God will never fade, Matt6:19-21 😊 You we’re a excellent witness of what a Christian athlete should be.

I've watched a lot of skaters in 50 years of watching. This girl has a purity, innocence and grace on the ice that is only hers. Only skater that made me tear up.

I was absolutely thrilled that she came from behind to win the free skate (with a 6.0 for artistry) and the bronze medal at the Sapporo Olympics. My hope is that, at times, she looks at that medal and views it as a great achievement.

Janet, Sasha, Michelle, Todd, Paul are demonstrations that a Gold does not always make a winner. I'd love to see an interview on Schuba or Poesch to see how the Gold changed their lives and what they did after amateur careers.
