    This week we are going to resurface a concrete patio with a sprayed concrete overlay in a slate pattern.
    All of the tools used in this video(including our hand grinder setup & scraper): dcva.us/so
    0:00 - Intro
    0:35 - Pressure Wash
    0:48 - Grind paint off of the concrete
    1:09 - Acid etch the concrete
    1:33 - Mix the concrete overlay
    1:58 - Apply the base coat of concrete
    2:49 - Tape the slate pattern on the concrete
    3:37 - Apply the sprayed concrete overlay
    4:20 - Remove the tape stencil
    4:47 - Prep for concrete sealer
    5:09 - Seal the concrete
    The first thing we have to do is prep the concrete so that the overlay will bond to it. We do this by pressure washing the concrete. Once we removed the mold, we realized part of this patio was covered in paint, so we had to grind the concrete to remove the paint. After we finished grinding, we acid etched the concrete and pressure washed it one more time.
    The next step is to apply a concrete base coat. We mix the concrete overlay and then apply it with a magic trowel on the surface.
    We return the next day and apply a slate pattern to the concrete. We do this by applying strapping tape to the concrete to create a slate stencil. Then we mix our concrete overlay material and spray it directly on to the concrete. We run a trowel over the concrete on the second coat to give it a knockdown texture.
    We let that material cure overnight and then we return to seal the concrete. We scrape the surface and then blow it clean before we apply the sealer. Once the concrete patio is clean we roll two coats of a solvent based clear sealer across the entire surface.
    We use many different types of concrete overlay materials. A few of our favorites are Increte Systems Spray-deck, H&C Duratop, or Westcoat overlay products. We can achieve similar results with any of these brands and they all seem to hold up really well in our Virginia climate.

The concrete deck was coated in the past, and I now believe it was this process, after viewing. So my big question: how could I repair an area that has lifted due to the substrate concrete spalling. Chipping up and feathering all loose first of course. I am just not sure what this product actually is? Thanks!

    Thank you, very informative. I'm planning to border an existing concrete walkway with railroad ties, and I'm leaning toward this style of overlay because it's so thin (I can hopefully do my ties first and not worry about leaving a space to dress the edges). What temperature is 'passable' for this method? I'm in PA, and have been going from 40-60 lately. If you think I need to change my thinking I'm all ears. Thank you!

    Great video and wonderful job. I've been contemplating doing something with my patio and this looks like the perfect solution. However, giving some thought to how well this stands up to chipping by children playing with toys, chairs rolling over it, table legs scraping against it. Is it that durable to handle such wear and tear; especially having the beautiful good looking grout lines. I guess my concern is how long will this stand up to prolong patio use? Nevertheless, wonderful and beautiful work and inginuity.

    The owner of the property should consider a corrugated vinyl ceiling to catch the rain and a gutter along the edge. While they’re at it, get some screen and make it a room!

    Hi, I'm thinking of trying this on my new poured concrete around my new pool. What would you recommend for the material in the hopper. Or possibly the same as you did but maybe a COOL paint for pool decks. I'm in AZ so the floor does get pretty hot.

    • @TimDCVA
      @TimDCVA  Před 3 lety

      We use a lot of different brands. I like Increte Systems, Westcoat, H&C...and many others. You probably just need to find something that you can buy thats relatively close to you because shipping bags of concrete across the country can get pretty expensive.
      We like to use a solid colored sealer around pool decks. It makes it easy to maintain under the harsh chemicals of the pool because it looks brand new every time you re-seal it. Solid sealers in lighter colors also don't get too hot in the direct summer sun.

      @@TimDCVA I have an older pool I would like to do resurface as you did in this video, are you recommending a solid color on top of the sprayed on coat? Do you have an example or brand of the sealer your talking about.

    @donp439 Před 3 lety +1

    This looks very similar to the process done on my driveway. I was never informed to seal it regularly, only to power wash it occasionally. Now, 10 years later it is chipping in several areas and getting worse. Are you in the Philly area or can you recommend someone near here than may be able to repair or resurface? The original contractor is retired and no longer in business.

    • @TimDCVA
      @TimDCVA  Před 3 lety

      I think the overlay would hold up well as long as the surface of the existing concrete is in good shape.
      An overlay like this is usually between $6-$8 per square foot for an average sized patio.

    This is beautiful. We have lots of cracks that we would have to fix first. will this process still work? It is a lot of cement and is curvy. Any suggestions for dealing with the curves? Also, what about using an epoxy as a pool surround?

    • @TimDCVA
      @TimDCVA  Před 2 lety

      Thanks! This process doesn’t work very well over cracked concrete. We can patch cracks but there’s always a chance they will come back.
      I wouldn’t recommend epoxy or polyurea around a pool. A cementious overlay (like in this video) would be more suitable.

      @@TimDCVA What in particular is wrong with using a polyaspartic around a pool?

    • @TimDCVA
      @TimDCVA  Před rokem +1

      Pool decks (and all exterior concrete) never have a vapor barrier under the concrete. Non-breathable coatings (epoxy, polyurea & polyaspartic) would be susceptible to issues from moisture passing through the concrete.

      It lasts a long time. We have quite a few commercial jobs in town that are >10 years old and still look good.
      It holds up really well under normal use. I wouldn’t drop a metal dumbbell on it though.
