    This was a great guide. I continued with building before the eggs hatched and learned why the OP waited until they had done so, and the hens were mature. Those chicks can be pretty slippery and I had trouble with a few falling through the floor or otherwise escaping and it's hard to get access into their upper enclosure when more has been build out. One modification I made was to the half wall in front of the breeders, which I changed to 1x1 iron bars so it was easier to see the hens and interact with them.

    I love the design Tom, you took my concept and ran with it, and it turned out so good. I kind of want to scale this up and see how efficient I can get it, using concepts from both designs. I think you should do an infinite Lox breeder vidoe next but I can see why that may not be something at the top of people's to do list. I have been working a Greydwarf farm that levels blood magic too! Might be and interesting idea, a bit more late game but the easiest to setup imo, since there is no need for lots of terraforming

    POST PATCH SOLUTION: Since I think they patched the eggs clipping through floors. You can follow all of the steps as normal until 4:09. At this point your going to need to replace the 2 1x1 beams connected to the center with a single 2m core wood log beam (MAKE SURE TO GO UNDERNEATH IN ORDER FOR IT TO AUTO SNAP ON TO THE BOTTOM OF BOTH BEAMS AT ONCE THIS IS IMPORTANT***). After you’ve done that you can continue to follow all of the steps exactly how he showed until 9:09. Once the chickens become fully mature Hens go back underneath and destroy the 2 1x1 floors the Hens are standing on. The Hens should still be stuck but their eggs can now freely fall down. After that follow the rest of the vid. Hope this helps!

    you can separate the chickens and the hens by creating a checkerboard floor with 1x1 floor tiles. for some reason, the chicken hitbox seems slightly larger than the hen's so while the chickens can't fit through the 1x1 gap the hens can fall into a separate chamber where they can be killed.

    • @RkHalo
      @RkHalo Před rokem +2

      This is a really great way of keeping the chicks safe while letting the hens be harvested. I just used one of the longer half walls blocking the exit going into the brazier then snapped a roof piece piece on top of it. Then I removed the half wall to create a gap the hens can get through but the chicks cannot. I use a single piece of food on the other side of the brazier which causes them to path to it as well to help speed it up instead of forcing them to push each other out.

    • @RkHalo
      @RkHalo Před rokem +3

      @@nanetteporter3373 Hi! I'll try to explain it all out as best I can sorry if this gets a little lengthy. To start I have a pen that is 4m tall (two full walls high) I also have a raised floor using the 2x2 stones underneath it. With the pen fully closed off I then added two 2x2 stone floor pieces in a line as the exit spot and turned it into like a corridor with walls on either side. Remove the bottom full size wall next to the exit and place two half walls in its place.
      Now you can snap any roof piece (any angle, any style work afaik) on the top of the lower half wall. Put the low end at then pen and the higher side down the exit corridor. Then you can remove the lower halfwall to create a small gap. For the autoharvesting I take out the first piece of floor in the exit (right next to the gap in the pen wall), put a floor brazier down and then make the floor flush again with a 2X2 iron grate. I then throw down a piece of food (dandelion) on the ground of the other side so they try to eat it.
      If you need I may be able to send you a few pictures if this doesn't help. Let me know!

I would say yes, buy it, because games like these you will start over at some point, since even after 1.0 there will be content updates and if you play until then you already know the basics.
      But there is also the risk of playing it dead before release, happened to me with Terraria, but i would still say YES, BUY IT!

    Love the design mate, truly a great balance of efficiency and esthetic, I wasnt even looking for this video but I was hooked from the first few seconds and easily persuaded me to sub. I do have one question in regards to perhaps potentially tweaking the killing system reliability and speed by instead using pufferfish on item frames at CHICKEN height (I assume the hitbox of a chick is shorter than that of an adult chicken), as you would only require the drop shoot to be walled off and lined with the pufferfish at chicken head height... would that work or are pufferfish in itemframe hitboxes unreliable?

    • @JamesTheVikingGames
      @JamesTheVikingGames Před rokem +1

      Unfortunately the chicks have a slightly bigger hit box (yea idk why) then hens, and run and jump all over so would likely die just as much as hens to the pufferfish. I have found that forcing the chicks to hatch in small enclosed area that has only a 2 meter wide by 1 meter high opening at the bottom forces the chicks to stay in the hatchery area and pushes the hens out since their hit box is slightly smaller, and can be forced through that open size easier then chicks. I can provide you with a quick video of this if you need.

Thats quite an odd quirk, Im sure the developers had their reasons, but you're right it is very counter-intuitive for the chicks to have larger hitboxes (I can accept that they run around and jump more than the adults though, as being overly energetic is a more juvenile trait anyway), and yes you know what I would (and Im sure others definetly would too) absolutely appreciate a video that delves into the more technical part of your process/the features and limits encompassing chicken breeding... I do have one query about chickens vs chicks in terms of their behaviour with swimming in water, do they drown or does it change their hitboxes (higher or lower than the other), or even are chickens better at escaping water? (If you were to have a drop chute go into like a river/small pond near ur base, seashore I assume wouldnt work due to storms)

      @@joshilane539 Happy to help out, I love messing around in Valheim with the mechanics trying to work out way to use AI behavior to my advantage. I'd like to put together a little video about some of the finer points I have learned along the way but that will take me some time. For now I can provide you a short video of the hatchery in action. The opening is made of glass and is 2 meters by 2 meters here because I let the hatchery get too full, and needed to let out hens faster. IF your hatchery isn't full of hens and chickens, then a 2 meter wide by 1 meter tall space works best to separate them. czcams.com/video/J9wU9NMwD4k/video.html
      As for the chickens swimming and their hit boxes, it could be interesting to look into, but I think all pets do not drown, they swim forever. I will dig out the floor of my hatchery area there a bit more and test it, should be able to hit water.

    what i could understand is that the eggs will clip through the back wall and fall to the ground or any other surface (and not break compared to real life eggs). Perhaps devs fixed this and it's ok to just leave an open slat instead of a full half wall covering the rear?
