Basically, James Labrie used your vocal melody on most of this song then modified some parts to fit it to his range.
To me, your singing sounds the same way how James sang it on I&W recording.
Great effort Charlie. You’re still one of those ppl. who helped built this band as to where they are now. Without you and others who left, DT is not that famous as today. Respect.

It wasn't intended as an apology more an eye opener for the guys that were judging my performance compared to JLB. I'm very proud of the fact that for over 25 years, James has sung pretty much the exact melody i wrote back in 1989 and JP has only suggested one or two notes that changed to showcase JLBs high range. \m/

I feel like Charlie's take on the song is more operatic, theatrical whereas James's is a more forwards rock style for Metro. Two entirely different feelings in my opinion. With James, it feels like a rock song. With Charlie, it feels personal and somewhat saddening. Really amazing stuff

Dominici has a unique tone and beautiful emotional voice in general. That said he’s a High baritone, and on good well rested days can sing these DT songs, not without effort though. That takes a lot of strain on a singers voice if you constantly push your range abilities(he does have a impressionable range for s baritone though), but he could never have toured with DT full scale without sounding shit like on this recording. LaBrie was a true vocal beast blessed with an amazing vocal range for men and power as well which made him so versatile and practically a vocal virtuoso until he got sick. Anyone who questions LaBrie, listen to the live at the Marquee album. He shines on it. That said, Dominici’s voice suited the first album.

Very perceptive and musically knowledgable comment. I've often said that I joined this band and took on the vocal job for the first album for The same reason why people climb mountains- because it was there. I knew the melodies I was writing were out of my comfort range but I wasn't looking to be comfortable I was looking to be great. Aim for the stars and you might at least get the moon. It took a lot of work and preparation to perform every night singing 2 whole steps above my natural range and there were those typical rock and roll situations where too much partying made that goal line a bit farther then it needed to be and the results can be heard on bootleg live tapes occasionally. A friend used to say " I pulled a carrot" lol. A very adequate analogy! That said In not making excuses just putting some truth out there among all the speculation. For my 4 CD trilogy I tended to stay in a semi- Comfortable range on the high end anyway but I took myself out of that easy chair for the low stuff. There are many that had no idea I could sing low notes as low as a natural E. Of course that's not the reason why I did it that way I did it for the same reason (you guessed it) as The reason why people climb mountains.

Charlie Dominici Honored to interact with you Charlie and thank you for your response! I totally understand what you are saying and I applaud you for your effort and honestly love to enjoy listening to your voice. It is very special to me and for many years I preferred yours, but I have stopped judging great singers because it’s like apple’s and oranges and if you know singing there is nothing but pure respect for vocalists. Many singers get to much unjustified critique from idiots that knows nothing about singing. I just love impressive singing techniques! and appreciate different styles. I really am impressed with your tone clear high notes, which many non-tenors tend to put more uncontrolled distortion and strain into that further fatigues the voice(big mistake). So your ability to keep the tone clear and bright even when you struggle a bit amazes me! As a baritone myself and amateur singer I understand the challenge you took on, I worked much on my high pitch range but it’s just such a marathon to improve it and takes a lot of practice and bad habits to break to get it right. I believe your voice brought an amazingly unique style to the band! I haven’t looked in the album sleeve in a long time, but did you also contribute to the lyrics?

Oops. To continue: arguably one of the best songs on the album. 8 also happened to be what solidified my entrance to the band. That song was Afterlife. I don't know if I'm actually a baritone or possibly a high tenor but if you've listened to any of the part 2 and part 3 of O3 a Trilogy you'll notice that I do have a deep voice in me as well as a high voice but yeah once you get up to that be note with talking OK face, mask, stay off the throat, watch the diaphragm etc. and all that vocal training from the 6 lessons I took back in 1980.

    • @djglammetal9666
      @djglammetal9666 Před 4 lety +1

Charlie Dominici When I was younger I didn’t really appreciate complex rock as much as I do now, so Afterlife and Status Seeker was actually my fave songs on the album funnily enough! I love the whole album today though. It’s a timeless gem! There is nothing like it, and you had an influence on that which no one can ever take away! Thank you so much for the stories behind the lyrics to the album. The lyrics on Afterlife has so many perspectives and seems deeply philosophical! Pleasure to know that you wrote them! About the vocal ranges, I could imagine that as a naturally gifted all round singer it is hard to determine one’s singing stereotype, I guess it’s just where you feel most comfortable. And I am sure you can sing everything - but what a I hinting at was that with constant performances, the “true” range/stereotype, that you feel most comfortable in, would show by where you have the best stamina over a longer time frame of daily singing, if you know what I mean? Anyway, it’s not important - you can sing everything on normal days, I am sure(growling, screamo etc not taking into account haha)... I have not heard your own albums I must admit - did not know they existed!(But I have played your DT album a 1000 times perhaps) I will check out your own ones ASAP! Hope you are doing well in general🤘🏼🎤

It's no secret that the bulk of DT's repertoire is in a higher range than my natural ability to perform night after night and especially under any kind of duress. Anyone that performs vocally knows that there are many things that can affect the human voice which is much more susceptible to obstacles such as environment ( thick cigarette smoke, heat or air conditioning, humidity, too little sleep, inaudible stage monitors while the band behind you is pushing a level of decibels similar to a 747 taking off (120-130 db), too much parting, and list goes on. The truth is I probably shouldn't have even gone to the audition that fateful night when the band that hates being compared to Rush played an hour of Rush songs as I sat there thinking 'Oh I'll just sing high like Geddy and nail this gig. Of course the rest is history but in closing let me say that noticing my difficulty for any one or more of the reasons mentioned earlier is no sign of musical intuition but rather as redundant as saying James wasn't hitting the notes because he had food poisoning. When you hear me pulling a carrot on any one of these recordings it's not so much for the reasons I mentioned but more that the songs are out of my range. But getting up on stage in front of thousands of people and making them scream and jump around flashing metal horns at you is such a f*king rush that I'll tolerate any unflattering criticism however minor and from any self proclaimed music critic regardless of their knowledge of the subject. After all with the advent of the internet it seems that any 12 year old with a keyboard and mouse is a credible source on the subject. I only hope they feel the kind of rush criticizing we performers that we feel when we throw ourselves to those little lions! Rrrroar!!! Lol

@ScrotumCancer2 Eh, it depends on the music. Overall, LaBrie is better, but make no mistake, this song is NOT a Dominici-range song. He does well on this version, but the LaBrie high-pitched vocals version is obviously the best.
A lot of WDaDU's material is far more Dominici-suited than LaBrie, as was evident in the 2004 reunion show.

What's the point of recording an intro that you'll never play again in the future? Since I&W, intro to this song is played from the studio recording for performances. Maiden did the same with Aces High.

The great thing about a band that goes back 26 years is that you can see how they've evolved over the years, what trials and tribulations they've gone through. Nevertheless, Dominici's vocals still hurt my ears here.

Hearing this along with stuff from his self titled band honestly makes me wish he never left. His voice was always better, and still is better than Labrie's imo
Original lineup was the best in terms of how they sound
Though at the same time, without Labrie we might not have songs like Disappear...

Charlie just can't match pitch all that well live. Even james is off sometimes but this is inexcusable. Not to mention the melodrama of the delivery of the lyrics (aside from the melody obviously)
