Why I don’t think “self help” works

    I have gone through the five stages of grief when it comes to the concept of self help. I ran into it late teens and read through so many self help books, albeit hiding the covers of my reading material on the train commute to uni, as the had outrageous titles. Early twenties I had a deep hatred for the whole concept, and it felt phony af. Now in my late twenties I am more in the grey area and feel like its a tool like everything else, and a stepping stone to come to the conclusion that the self cant be helped with a roadmap to success laid out by preexisting ideas. We all have to pave the way individually and things arent as ordered as we as a collective makes it seem. Its all chaos from our perspective, that is limited to the human capabilities of perceiving and interacting with the world around us. hope that wasnt too much of a word salad, good luck on your journey!

    I do agree that I think the only way you can truly get there is through your own thought and introspection, but I do think some self help can atleast get your mind in the right place and get you thinking about the right things. I do completely agree though the only way to truly be comfortable with yourself is through your own experience and self work

    Self-help is a product sold to fit a want/need in the market. Whether or not that product works, is another story.

    It is only through you! (Me, us!)
    Our environment is a manifestation of us and if we’re struggling, then a tool like therapy, self help books/podcasts/videos, whatever, is great to help break that pattern and be the “glitch” we need to push us more towards our own individual self acceptance and enlightenment. None of it works unless we are intentional with how we want our lives and ourselves to be structured in a healthy, freeing way.
