    I study fashion and nomura is a design genius. He's very aware of how fashion can age the design of the game quite quickly.
    He's choosing niche underground styles, then combining them to fit the purpose of the character. Big unusual silhouettes and wacky colors help distance it from reality and ease the suspension of disbelief. All the accessories like belts, zippers, pockets, serve to alude to functionality. his particular influences set the characters in a urban, contemporary timeline without specifying a particular year or place, unless the story requires it. I'd call his style atemporal but edgy while pretending to be functional lmao.
    Some of the characters show how dated they are, but given the amount of characters designed by Nomura im surprised how few there are.
    His bishonen androgynous characters, are very much a product of japanese culture. Softer features look more fashionable and tend to be described as better looking. in contrast of manly buff characters that tend to mostly alude to strength but are a necessity in fighting games.

      That's interesting because I've seen the same design choices out of him for a long time other than when he has to work on something more fantasy oriented. Always relies on the same color themes, lots of straps and buckles, even to overuse. A lot of characters end up looking the same, as do their designs choice unless going for a very different vibe/animation style. He's actually pretty limited or has been for the last decade or more.
      Also, most are inspired by fashion they see in magazines or in use. I really don't see his aesthetic out there as it hasn't changed much looking at certain characters, even hairstyles.

Not only is it more downplayed compared to Nomura’s other character designs in, say, KH or FF (seriously, there’s not an overabundance of belts or zippers to be found on them) but it perfectly fits Shibuya’s fashion trends, which is even more notable considering how much TWEWY places a huge emphasis on fashion, not just in the setting and story but also for gameplay as well.

    I feel like Nomura has eras where you can see what style he's into. In the early 90s he could mimic Amanos style, in the mid 90s his style used a more anime look with characters having a high waist and long legs, in the late 90s he was into silver accessories, feathers, and leather, by the 2000s he was into the urban meets punk look (by this point he was heavily into Zippers), by the mid Early 2000 belts were added with the zippers, by the Twenty Teens he toned it down and currently he's into Plaid.

      I don't ever recall him mimicking Amano's style, not even close. He actually has to do more of that with Dissidia, which outfit wise? Yes, he has to match it, but not his style. Very far apart in aesthetic. Amano is an artist, Nomura is a character designer. He's been into zippers and leather still, you're just thinking about Organization 13 it was overused with. Everyone has been in black since Advent Children.

    • @meteornome2556
      @meteornome2556 Před 4 lety +1

      @@blumiu2426 Aesthetic wise Nomura did originally mimic Amanos style, just look at Gilgamesh if you don't believe me. Nomura has been using less belts and zippers and has been using plaid and buttons along with brighter colors in his current designs. Previous designs like Organization XIII don't count because that's their uniform from the older games. Lauriam, Brain, Strelitzia, Ephemer, Ira, Aced, Ava, Gula, Envi, and most of the Torna group from Xenoblade. Those are examples of Nomura's current designs. He would have to just as programmers do when making 3D models. I recall seeing FF XIII and FF XV using zippers just as much. What game are you talking about where he is using plaid? It sure wasn' the Kingdom Hearts 3 or FF VII Remake.
      You are forgetting that Nomura is working within a theme for Xenoblade 2. In his own work, he uses certain fashion, but always the same hairstyles. The villains are wearing armor mainly. I still don't see this plaid attire. You realize plaid is patchwork design?

    • @meteornome2556
      @meteornome2556 Před 4 lety +3

      @@blumiu2426 Clearly you're not understanding what I'm saying. *Nomura copied the aesthetic of Amanos art style.* Armor, and multicolored Fabric with multiple designs is a staple in Amanos art style. And it was something Nomura translated into his design when he created Gilgamesh.
      Not trying to start an argument but you must be blind if you didn't see the overabundance of plaid and buttons in Kingdom Hearts 3, that or you're being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. Sora, Riku, Kairi, Lea, Isa, Xion, Mickey, Hayner, Olette, new outfits in that game had all of those traits. And Nomura is more prone to penciling his art rather than painting his designs. Sakuguchi even said what made Nomura so unique back in the day was that he was the only one who'd show him his sketchbook of designs when they would be having group meetings while talking about possible characters for the Final Fantasy games. instead of discussing them He'd show Sakuguchi his designs of what he had been working on.
      Final Fantasy XIII didn't have an overabundance of Zippers steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/368532262444438606/428797BD6EE274B4FB395AE4FBE49D2DF56F60E7/?imw=512&imh=487&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=true
      (And the belts used for the characters for the most part were practical.)
      Neither did XV res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/2/8/0/2809471-6499373576-final-d25e5.png
      Granted the fashion company Roen also helped in the designs for that game.
      So talking about how Nomura is only belts and zippers is extremely hyperbole. Even in the Final Fantasy VII remake the design of Sephiroth is a mishmash of his VII, Advent Children, and Dissidia look rolled into one.

    Studying character design, in school, it became apparent the effect of growing up with seeing the designs of Final Fantasy. It helped me to learn to think outside the box and just be different. However, on the negative side, I’m constantly bombarded with ignorant criticisms on why my outfits/designs are unrealistic. So another thing is that when I see a lot of designs from Final Fantasy, I can easily understand the intent of a majority of them.

    The FF Mobius one is double funny cause when we talk about female sexualization some go ''But guys be also oversexualized and shirtless!'' but also, shirtless isn't the same as some sexy overdesigned clothing, Mobius is the closest to the over-sexualization of something to the same extent, and it got some dumbasses mad at it, it be weird and I don't know what message I'm trying to say other than I always hated the argument of guys being also oversexualized when I honestly don't find a shirtless girl as hot as a girl wearing all those belts and whistles to make my eyes go to places that a designer wants them to go like Rikky from X-2 and all that.
    Like not that things can't be sexy, I like them sexy, i'm just saying that the argument for shirtless muscle man = hot isn't universal at all, it can be, depending on your tastes, yeah, but it's a wee bit different design-wise.

      @Eevee :3 Sigh, how am I gonna explain this, ok, i'm an artist right?
      So, as an artist, the way I draw something, i have to keep in mind where a persons eyes will go, where do I lead them to. A design isn't like, clear cut, if you're not thinking about what you're looking at, then its a bit boring, but also if you think too much, then its too much right?
      So, ok, low-rise thongs right? Why where they ever considered sexy? same reason as the male's ''V'' thing, it leads the eyes down there, the clothing and lines are flirting with you, same with a sexy bikini, its all about flirting rather than nakedness.
      Nakedness, shirtless, is a sign of wilderness and freedom, it is not inherently sexy unless you're a teen who has never seen a naked person ever, nudeness is a sign of freedom and you just go ''oh naked person'', there's not much to it, there's no flirt, nothing to think.
      Like, it is subjective, what you find hot or not, I'm bisexual, and it's just my stupid opinion, however when I design clothes to be sexy, I design it to lure the eyes, to catch the eyes of a person and take them to a ride to the good place, that's what ''sexy'' is when it comes to fashion, and if it's too little, nothing is left for the imagination, and boy, the imagination is the sexiest goddamn part!

    • @Densoro
      @Densoro Před 4 lety +9

      You get it. The way sexy clothes _frame_ the body. Not just visually either, but like...kinesthetically.

    • @QMMarc
      @QMMarc Před 4 lety +5

      @@Densoro Yeah, there's a whole art to being sexy, and for the most part i'll be honest and say that women has way more options, not because they're better at it, but cause of mostly culture, then we'll dive into how long they were objectified by media, art and whatevers and it's a whole big thing on sociopolitics that I don't really get or want to get cause it be either bad, sad or boring, or all at once.
      Point is that it be boring that the idea of man being sexy is ''shirtless and muscle'' is kinda lazy compared to how creative sexy girl fashion is.
      That said never cared for the booty-shake-sexy-centric some of it is, I dunno why but a girl shaking a big butt means absolute nothing to me and all I see is a hairless ape doing a mating dance that part of sexyness is dead on me and i find it not good but i digress, theres weakpoints on girl sexy, thats the point of the digression. I guess i like things to be overly designed and not rely on the animal part of the brain that go ''must put dick in and impregnate'', which, yeah thats why you find x or y hot when you take off all the pretenses and artistry, i guess thats what vulgar is maybe. I don't really know, i'm talking off of my ass, take all i said on a big salty grain.

    2:15 but that's JoJo's fashion, something that Bucciarati might have in his wardrobe.
    Also, never forget how Lulu still could rock that corset & those belts when she was supposedly heavily pregnant in FFX-2.

    I was really expecting you to comment on Viviane Westwood being a resident of Altissia and designer of Lunafreya's wedding dress. Somehow, so much came out about this game, for so long, that these kind of things become less known, but very much fashion-relevant.

    I'm glad you brought up and sorta linked Racing Lagoon and modern rap . The nostalgia for 90s and early 2000s also extend to the cars and the way they’re customized. I see vids of Nissan SIlvias cruising and drifting while 808s play. I could imagine a modern sequel of this game. I sometimes see photos of JDM cars used on amateur rap album art.
    I really wish there'd be a modern racing lagoon with Nomura designs tbh.

    I'm old so I find the Amano stuff to be my favorite of them. I found it neat I could look at one of his characters and not really be sure if it was a boy or a girl, more so than even some of the later artists like Nomura who obviously toned down that vibe a lot in more recent times. Cool video.

    If you ever decide to do a follow up video on the subject of fashion in videogames, I'd suggest taking a look at Kazuma Kaneko's work, the SMT series has some of the most amazing and interesting fashion choices I've ever seen in videogame history. Btw, since my two biggest obsessions in life are fashion and videogames I thoroughly enjoyed this video, thanks a lot for it!

  • @johnbayard6557
    @johnbayard6557 Před 4 lety +2

    I once heard that the reason why Tetsuya Nomura designs had numerous belts and zippers, is because belts are seen as a form of status symbolism, in regards to the respect that character has garnered. Zippers however, are probably about his personal style. Fantastic video man, like always.

    Thank you, THANK YOU for not completely sh*ting on Nomura's fashion designs. I see too many people just talking bad about these characters just because it's different. I love these designs mainly cuz (it's my kind of aesthetic but) it stands out. It's not so bland or following a trend. Even the tone downed designs still look great and without being lost in the crowd. Thanks for being unbiased. Awesome video!

    amazing video! i could say that im a lot inspired by FF art style, or to fit the video, ff FASHION haha.
    from the hairs to the cloths, i always considered ff such a good example to create stuff, i could even say that i wouldnt draw like i do without playing ff games.
    When i was younger, i remember the first time i saw ff12, i wasnt happy, it didnt look like a proper ff , it felt "mature" at least compared to 7,8,10 haha and that bothered me a lot, there wasnt enough spike hair, belts and swords bigger than the person wielding it
