Flea and John compliment each other so well because John often plays really high whilst Flea is often cranking those mids and playing so hard to create a really sharp but balanced mid range. John and Flea alternate in and out of that space but they're always working in tandem to create a musical salad, instead of other Bassist who just add behind the guitar to beef up the musical soup.
If you play in a funk based rhythm heavy rock band, like the Chili Peppers, you’re a tight-knit beat team. Ego is left at the door, you have to serve the song and make people move their asses.

I ❤JF! I can’t get enough of his music; he’s an underrated genius! In my mind he ranks with past masters like Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. And his voice is SO beautifully angelic.
Whaa- have you heard his solo albums after he left RHCP in the mid 90s? His hands had more life in it than anything else in his body, and in his second solo album his hands worked mostly so he could pay for some more heroin to inject
You can hear it. It’s what made the two parts work so well together. I love them so much. I don’t listen to them non stop like when I was I kid, but I might go on a binge. I need to see them live. They were everything to me for most of my life.

I see the bass too. Also drums. I grew up playing drums so I hear the drums first in everything I do. I play a little guitar. But ai hear the drums follow bass and vice versa. Everyone is different it just follows your ear.
So true. Songs can get made in so many different ways. With a bass riff someone came up with first or maybe a sweet guitar cord started something amazing with others around hearing it and adding on. Drums and bass are the groove victor wooton talks about everything has
The sign of a great band is a great bassist. The bass really sets tone of song and is the peanut butter to the drums and guitars wonder bread. When I can’t figure out what I love so much about a band that would otherwise be described as simple or unsophisticated, it’s always the bass lines. Why British bands are so great
You can really tell in John's playing. He's really the embellishment of the band and really glues all of the sonics of the band together after Flea's bass lol!
The music style and song should define which instrument shines and when. It’s music, when it comes to this kind of stuff, there are no rules. I can see why he says that with a band like RHCP though.
I love Frusciante but that really shows in their music. I was listening to the riff from This Velvet Glove today and I forgot it’s basically just him picking one string the entire song besides the chorus where he plays 3 chords. Dude knows how to coast.
