  • Robert Q. Lewis appears on a 1959 episode of "I've Got a Secret" doing beatnik schtick. His secret is that panelist Henry Morgan, who had recently released a comedy album that included poetry recited over jazz, would be taken after the program to the Village Vanguard to recite his poetry to an actual live audience.
We get to see a couple minutes of Henry reciting some of this to jazz played by Norman Paris. It's actually pretty funny. I think this is from his album "The Saint and the Sinner" but I haven't yet been able to play it to be sure of that.
Program host is Garry Moore; the panelists are Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan, and Betsy Palmer.

Every time I see Robert Q Lewis of this era, I always think of Jeff Goldblum of today. I would be rooting for Jeff to be cast if they ever create a movie with a 1950s or 1960s Robert Q.

Love that where Garry Moore changed from "kool" to "Salem" as Salem was also made by RJR who made Winston which sponsored the program. Gotta love live TV

It's especially ironic to hear closeted gay celebrities say "I've Got A Secret." As a 60-year-old gay man myself, I grew up on these old Goodson Toddman shows, and Robert Q always creeped me out. He always went overboard leering at women and trying to come across as a playboy, when it was all cover for his real orientation. Sad, but those were the times.

Are you sure? I don't care one way or the other, but it never occurred to me. Robert Q. Lewis is a magical name to me from my early childhood. I used to listen to him on the radio and I remember the image of a pair of glasses on the television. Nothing else, really.
Incidentally, didn't Betsy Palmer star in Friday the 13th (1980)?

That's basically the gimmick that the 2000s GSN revival ran with....the entire panel on that show was gay

@@geraldmartin7703 Sinatra said the Q stood for Queer. Personally, I could care one way or another.

@@geraldmartin7703 Robert Q Lewis was apparently a known entity in the Hamptons gay scene of the 1950s, so yeah, he was probably gay.

Did Henry Morgan really go through with it and play the Village Vanguard?

On another website listing descriptions of the episodes it states that Henry Morgan did play that venue. And was invited back.

Gary Moore: "Hop Talk". Robert Q.: "No Hip Talk". So, they invented "Hip Hop"???

I just figured out something."beatnicks" and "valley girls" have got to be relatives. How closely related,is as of yet unclear, but related they are.Compared to "beatnicks" and "valley girls", a tree stump is more intelligent.
