Just in case anyone is interested, Sigourney Weaver, in addition to kicking ass in many a film, is actually a very gracious lady in real life. I once met her with a friend while she was walking back from the "set" of the movie she was currently working on (The movie was "Copy Cat").
She was surrounded by two very large body guards.
Despite the fact that it was late at night, and she was obviously exhausted, she smiled at us and and talked with us for about 10 minutes, just shooting the breeze, and even a joke or two. She then happily autographed our "still in box" Aliens action figures. As she was signing, she joking said "I hate these things. I don't earn a penny from them because the likeness is always different enough so it doesn't resemble me, and I have no rights to Ripley the character." But she wasn't complaining of bitter. On the contrary, she was just letting us know how things work in Hollywood.
In any case, after talking with us a bit more, she had to get going, so we thanked her for talking to us/autographing our items and that was it.
The fact she took the time to not only just autograph something but to also shoot the breeze with us with no pretensions speaks very highly of her.

Probably too late to this, but, Hudson is much more understandable if you look into Alien lore. He mentions in the movie he only has four more weeks of service. What they don't go into is that Hudson, unlike the other squad members, only signed on for ten years. After that he planned to buy a bar, and live the rest of his life on the profits in luxury. So he's literally a month away from a lifelong dream that would set him up forever.
Another thing the film doesn't do well is illustrate just how much experience the squad has with dealing with alien species, it's just they haven't had to deal with a species as powerful and dangerous. Hudson has survived in a top squad for almost ten years, he isn't a bad soldier, just overwhelmed.

@@richardgaldos6901 , I have to disagree. Especially the way the Special Edition of Aliens spends time showing Hadley's Hope and Newt's family before Ripley and the marines go there... makes the movie drag and takes the suspense away.
The theatrical edition follows Ripley's point of view during most of the story and that, to me, is its greatest strength. It makes the 1st act much more atmospheric and way more mysterious, especially because you as a viewer see Hadley's Hope only when it has already been destroyed. The Special Edition has the daughter plotline in it, that's true. That's the only thing I would have added to the theatrical cut myself, but I have reservations towards that as well. As a sci-fi action movie the theatrical cut of Aliens works - we as viewers root for Ripley's relationship with Newt in a more universal way - Ripley has a parental instinct as a human being - she doesn't necessarily need the specific background for the main story to work and to make her character feel believable.

    • @bjlewis5431

One of the other things not many folks appreciate fully is how strong the Xeno's are..that single punch, right through the APC's bulletproof drivers windshield..and with still enough inertia left in its arm & claws to swing a strike at Ripley in the same movement after going right through the armoured glass..
And later, their climbing upside down, silently, across the roof of the ops center..and again later, down vertical ventshafts easily & quietly, like that one trying to get the drop from above on Vazquez..with no problem supporting their entire body weight in a vertical climb, silently & quickly..
And gliding so silently through water that Newt didn't even sense or know it was right on top of her until it was already in arms reach of her, literally..
Which is copacetically every bit as graceful as any human gymnast or ballet dancer, or swimmer could ever get respectively..not something you notice or appreciate at the time, watching the movie..but in hindsight..these are highly telling levels of fluid power & Grace, clearly lots of evolution and their ability to silently communicate & work together as both a hive/pack mind..hunting all as one..
And yet, single Xeno's take on specific roles & targets seperate from the rest of the hive..like the one that targeted the drop-ship crew, and took out Spunkmeyer without alerting Corporal Collette Ferro that anything was wrong, until it's already seriously invading your personal space, in your own cockpit..
And the other ones, that went after Newt, and one for Vasquez..another for Hudson, from below..all single, specifically targeted, 1-v-1 engagements & taskings, even as all the others grouped & attacked en-mass with brute force & overwhelmingly numbers.
But, (as we saw against the sentry guns in the special edition).. they can reason & count losses, see cause & effect..alter strategies on the fly & change their plans..even know enough to cut power & use elevators..
And the Queen, later on as she chases Ripley to the Sulaco's cargo bay bulkhead door, and rams into it like a bulldozer, you can actually see & hear the entire, giant hydraulic door paused & slowed in its travel for a moment, by the Queen's charge against it..
Given how skeletal they seem at first glance, they're clearly immensely powerful & 'graceful' bastards, in their own right..
A far cry from just being mere 'bugs' Hudson, Drake & Ms "Where they are" Vasquez..you all seriously underestimated your enemy, mate..
That's why it's "game over" for you All. Newt was by far the wiser of them all, even Ripley saw & recognised that early on..understanding Newt's assertion that "It won't make any difference" was this hardened survivor's genuine assesment of their situation & chances..against the Xeno's.
That's a far more competent & evolved, pro-level, apex-predator species than most folks ever give them credit for, as you first watch the movie.
Ripley's idea of just getting the hell off-world, and nuking them from orbit, was not just good tactical thinking for minimizing risks saving their own human lives..
It was her own recognition & consideration of just how powerful and resilient & apex-predator level these Xeno's really were.
Like Newt, she had experienced them first hand, up close & personal, slaughtering everyone around them..
The supposed 'bug-hunting' specialist Marines (their squad motto, on the side of their dropship, in a diving eagle shooting a weapon logo, is "Bugstompers! We endanger species.") were actually the real 'amatures' here, in this story..something you also only appreciate long after they're all gone, and the movie's over.
That subtle but serious twist of 'mere civilians' to be mocked & told to shut up..vs the might of much military power..sure did an about-face towards becoming a farce, fast..
Admittedly, the plot twist that had them all disarmed of most of their capability to fight hard & use all of that military might, like the APC and all its heavy weaponry as well, inside the atmoshere processor's reactor..was a big factor in dumbing down the marines & the massive amount of ass-kicking they could've given the Xeno's in a real, unfair fight..
But there wouldn't really be a movie, much less a true redemption & a rescue, for Ripley & Rebecca, otherwise..
But take a few moments to think about the fight & the tactics, the capability, vitality & smarts of the way the Xeno's actually held up their side too.
Devilishly smart, smooth & detirmined bunch of giant, hive-minded, preying mantis level bastards.

Don't let anyone make you feel bad... this is absolutely a terrifying action/horror film. It's also a landmark piece of cinema. At the time it released, it was uncommon for an action blockbuster to have such depth of human relationships, particularly around a female lead. The movie's juggling of different forms of motherhood and maternal instinct really lifts it above the genre. The relationship and between Ripley and Newt, along with scenes like Vazquez and Gorman wrapping themselves around the grenade, are filled with so much raw emotion.

A great character, male or female, really relies on having a great script. While you could have cast any actor as the main protagonist, the theme of two mothers facing off in the end calls for a strong female lead. And Sigourney Weaver really cemented her position as that.
There are too many crappy scripts these days where they glue in female characters to try and cash in on the 'mah representation' bit. When they inevitably fail to garner a positive response (and more importantly, big cash returns), everyone who doesn't like the movie get's called a bigot rather than the studio taking some introspection in the crap they were trying to peddle... It does a disservice to great female actors (Emma Stone in Cruella for example) and puts people off trying new movies because most of them today are awful.

That's why she's a strong character, because you're allowed to hold male characters responsible for their own actions.
And that's also why the character got worse and worse with every sequel. In the 3nd one she was just awful, and in the 4th one... she was just a joke.

Last one I can think of that was written to take responsibility for her own actions and made to suffer was Sansa Stark, and it took her about 7 seasons before she toughened up and took charge, without having to be the slightest bit masculine.

Also, they're hardcore space marines trained to damage, not repair and be tough, not sensitive, so there's that as well. Your original comment said it was absurd to think profanity would upset to Newt because she had already seen death and carnage. Nothing you've said changes the fact that people who have experienced or are experiencing psychological trauma due to violence certainly can find profanity upsetting. This is because it demonstrates a loss of control, and that can make people lose hope or panic. That's the whole rationale behind Col. Danny McKnight forcing himself to walk and appear calm while he was under fire in Mogadishu and behind the British army tradition of officers not ducking. I think she is rather like Sarah Connor in: The Terminator and we know how that turns out.

My older sister had a crush on Harrison Ford. My younger sister wanted to out-badass him - she became a paramedic and worked search and rescue, so I think she succeeded.

I noticed she identified as if she was Newt more than Ripley

I'd pay to see Cassie doing cosplay of Ripley in the mech suit, saying "GET AWAY FROM HER YOU ... bad monster!"

you should look at the art that inspired the monsters of this movie, the artist did a lot of merging organic and machinery aesthetics, making for some really strange and horrifying images

Newt is one of the best badass kids I saw in a film. The girl is scary, strong, clever and funny at the same time. You feel for her and want to save her at any cost just like Ripley
