2015 KTM 390 Duke Video Review

  • After two days riding KTM’s 390 Duke around Thailand, including many laps burned at a local racetrack, I’ve been seduced by its combination of style, performance and value. There are plenty of faster bikes, and there are several cheaper bikes. But, to my mind, the 390 Duke hits a wonderful balance in the coolness-per-dollar ratio.

What an amazing description "newer rider". That has so many meanings: Young, coming off dirt, first time to own a motorcycle. Thank goodness he didn't say beginner rider because that phrase now encompasses every motorcycle up to and including litre bikes. It's a way for someone to put down a bike they consider inferior to what they ride. When I was a young lad, I owned a Yamaha RD400 sport bike (no fairings then). Powerful 40 HP motor, two stroke explosive power, front and rear disk and alloy wheels, with a 52 inch wheelbase (similar to their diminutive race bikes). A beginner bike it wasn't because it would rip the front tire off the ground in four gears. The power was scary to any new rider, and I let my best friend ride it because he wanted to buy one. It scared him so much, he never bought a motorcycle. Be careful riders calling any bike a beginner's bike, because all bikes are beginner's bikes. It only matters which level you're moving to.

While I'm not a 'new rider' - I feel like this bike is open more to that.
I do a lot of riding around town, lots of stop and go, lots of lane splitting, etc....and yea, we can talk spec sheets, R1's, Super Duke R's, etc. all day long, but fact of the matter is that those things absolutely blow in this area. What shines are the small bikes, your SR400's, your CB450's, your Ninja 300's, etc. I feel like this bike would be epic fun in a setting like this (a commuter setting, I guess you could call it). Looks nimble, quick, upright, and you can take it into the canyons and enjoy it on a weekend.
Really liking what I'm seeing here, even though I'm not a new rider, and this wouldn't be my only bike.

Don't like the title of beginner's bike, Owned a Honda 125r and Ninja 650r and my last bike was Ducati took one of these out the other day and a beginner could get in to trouble. Experience riders don't always want big bikes wish company's would drop the title.

The footpegs is what annoys me on the duke 125, 200, 390. First time i rode this bike the first corner i went into i was already scraping the footpeg. You really cant go low with it and that bothers me. Is there any way to mod that ?

in europe, with 16, we can only ride 125cc bikes :(

    • @DnBDubstepManiak1
      @DnBDubstepManiak1 Před 8 lety +3

not in my country though. 50cc... We can only drive 125cc when we are 18. And we need a seperate drivers license for those as well. The older generation however may still drive all bikes even if they only did exam with cars or so. There are also extra limitations.
      A1 - 18years old - max. 125cc, max. 11 kW/15bhp
      A2 - 20years old - max. 35 kW/47bhp
      A - 24years old (or 22 when you have A2 for at least 2years) - no limitations.
So for this one right here, you need to be at least 20years old. The Duke 690 for example 24...
We also HAVE to follow at least 9hours of driving lessons and need to pass for an exam on a terrain and one on the road. In other words you will get close to €1000 just to get the license... Pretty much the reason why I would like to start with this one xD Not so powerfull of course as the 690 or 1290, but pretty cheap for the performance and quality it still has.

In Bermuda we can only have a 50cc when we're 16 and a 125 or higher when we're 18. It really sucks when your 16 even kits are illegal but we still do them.

Here in Brazil we can only ride any bike after 18....no matter what cilinder.. we perform just 1 test with a 125cc and if we pass we can ride any cilinder bike! kkkkkk... funny isn it?
Anyways its not what usually happens..
We ride any bike.. no matter how old we are..
