Your Boxing Footwork - 5 Things to Know and Try

- www.myboxingco... - In this video you are going to learn some very simple principles about your boxing footwork and your boxing stance.
However, when considered in the right way, these principles will enable you to be adventurous and versatile in making the trade-off between power-based fighting and being mobility based fighting.
There are 5 things that we cover about the boxing stance:
1. The relative position of your feet
2. The angle of the front foot
3. The posture of the front foot (up or flat)
4. The posture of the rear foot (up or flat)
5. The angle of the rear foot.
Two of these things are absolute, in my opinion non-negotiable, if you want to maximise the effectiveness of your boxing footwork.
The other three of these things give you the ability to vary your stance depending upon the type of boxing style that you want to adopt.
And bear in mind, versatility is a huge advantage to the boxer, and that versatility can show itself by change style from minute-to-minute and even second-to-second.
So, think about these five boxing footwork things. Experiment and try out new configurations to see how things feel and what they do for you.
Cheers
Fran

I'm finally learning, it's not how hard you punch, it's how well you move!
Boxing training is such a chore until your feet start to figure it out, then practice gets a lot more fun when your feet do what your brain wants them too
I agree with all of the above. I tell my guys, out the feet in the right place and the hands will follow. What's the point in punching hard when you can pivot away or can't balance etc
Exactly!!! All the focus has always been on the hands but it should be put instead on the foundation(feet)
Came for the technique, stayed because of the pep talk! Great mindset, coach!
Thank you pal
Awesome content!
Foot work is probably the most neglected aspect of fighting. The vast majority of fans doesnt have any understanding of it. I hope your videos help educating as many people as possible.
Thank you
Hope your doing well through this pandemic Fran sands. As always great videos 🙂
Thank you, hope all is good with you too
To be a better coach when all this settles, being already a hell of a coach... I think you reached your goal just by stating that, Fran. Stay safe, youre necessary.
Thank you pal
Thankyou Coach. These Were Very Useful . The Commen Mistakes we Make Have Huge Affects on our Performace
The foot work video is a great tool for every boxer, but the best part of the video for me are the last 2 minutes, those words are a tool that almost any person could use today boxer or non boxer. Fantastic work 👏

I agree on not breaking guidlines...but most importantly I want to thank you for what you do. My 17 year old son is on his way to overcoming thyroid cancer completely. His vocal cords were paralyzed in the thyroidectamy 2 years ago. He has limitations to his breathing But because of your videos I am able to help him learn boxing which he loves. This is one of the reasons why his health is exponentially improving as he has a outlet to better his physical being. He is constantly improving his cardio and can now go so many more rounds when we spare at parks with head gear and all. My knowledge is very basic but through the gift of your experience we have come along way. You have created an opportunity for us to better our lives. I thank you for this. From Des Moines, Iowa, US, much love....
Thank you so much for your inspirational contribution Julio. Please pass on my very best wishes to your son, he sounds to me like the kind of young man who will let nothing stand in his way - exactly the kind of kid who in my experience does great things and the kind of kid I love to work with. Keep doing what you are doing sir.
you're an absolute gem mate! ive been a sports coach and teacher for years and you are such an amazingly natural coach and communicator with a big heart and great message. love your passion too and example you set .sending big aroha from Aotearoa (new zealand!) and best wishes to you and your whanau (family) where i work with at risk youth. people like you are champions for the amazing mahi (work) you do for communtiy. nga mihi nui (big thanks) joe. p.s. my boss here is a scouser too!

9 minute lesson, will take a lifetime to master! Pure gold here Fran 👍✊!
Cheers pal👍
Fran, thanks again for your explanations, clear as always! Take care and stay healthy because I still want to enjoy your coaching work. At my age of 74 I'm still coaching boxing and kickboxing techniques twice a week at a sportclub in the Netherlands.
Thank you Coach, always nice to have a fellow coach contribute. Keep doing your great work sir, it's needed.
Thanks so much for your efforts to help us how to move & use our feet & body skillfully
You're great Frank, thank you
BONSOIR coach vous explique très bien vous exercices MERCI yassine d Algérie
Coach, the diagram on the floor. Have you done a video on different ranges and stances? I seen a glimpse. Can you do example with diagram? Long Med Short ranges stance?
The very best coach on CZcams
Thank you, that's really kind.
One of the very best, is Fran!
Thank you pal
Fran, I was boxing this morning and baking tonight! Trying to get better at both.
Sorted Mick :-) 👍
Fran, I love your channel. Excellent no nonsense and easy to understand approach for the beginner and even experienced fighter.
Having been involved in the game for most of my life I can honestly say that this is the most important topic. I actually suplimented my boxing with karate for years and the reason was that karate footwork on the balls of your feet is paramount to the in-out style of fighting they have. Keep it up bud
Thanks mate. Know a few lads who crossed from Karate to boxing and you're right, very complementary footwork and they really stood out.
Thankyou very much for your videos Fran you've been a great motivator for me
Class message Fran.
Thanks Paul
Fair play coach, your a sound bloke there, I pray we can all get back to it proper soon, this bleedin lockdown has been absolutely miserable yea? Vids are always class👍cheers.
Cheers Clint, hope so mate.
Excellent as always.
I had the same confusion today about the position of the front foot (2nd element demonstrated). What a coincidence that you shared a video about it. It solved my problem. Thanks, bro.
Perfect timing ;-)
Thank you
Thank you coach!!!
Hi coach! To comment on another video you posted in the past about the front foot pointing forward. I believe I have seen someone explain that it allows faster forward movement, particularly when jabbing. The stance is seen much in fencing. I do agree with you however, that the loss of balance is significant.
Thanks
In my combat sports gym, they pretty much only give boxing/Muey Thai cardio lessons. These videos are more useful to me. The reason I go there is because of the serious jiu-jitsu they teach there. Which I go to at least 3 times a week. But I train myself striking with the heavy bag there. These videos help with my footwork, which is useful because my bjj professor knows that fights start on their feet and for warming up makes us do shoulder touching boxing spars.
Great philosophy
Thank you Cosch, amazing speech at the end!!
Good to see you Fran!
Brilliant stuff as ever, thank you.
Thank you
Thanks for Amazing advice always
Always welcome
Thank you for the footwork basics. As a beginner I am appreciating the fundamentals. Stay safe. 👍😎🇦🇺

Absolutely tremendous words at the end Fran, thank you sir
Fantastic! Thanks. I appreciated it when you distinguished between non-negotiable skills and variables. That's a nice touch because your'e teaching boxing as a science and and art form. I liked it when you talked about trying things out to find your personal style. You're an amazing teacher.
Thanks David, appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment

I flat my moving direction foot, and the opposit foot of my moving direction is not flat, because if i keep my rear foot always not flat,it will sour very fast
I really enjoy your videos, and I don't even train boxing. Thanks a lot for your effort!
😀 Thank you
Tanks for that one, Fran. I love the mindset. Keep going !
Thanks Alex, hope you are well pal
Thank you for making another video again. :-)
Greetings, Coach! When will you do a video on eliminating angles? As you saw, Lomachenko lost to a well prepared Lopez.
Keep an eye out tomorrow😉🥊
Coach can you make a video on how to change stance when getting inside? Thank you
Coach, You seem like the mma of pure boxing, I love it. But I wonder if you can explain mike Tyson’s footing with peek a boo, I notice he switches stances but before he does he stays squared but it’s his footing that throws me off in one drill I see if his his feet both look like they’re pointing towards the opposition and this confused the hell out of me. Would love a video on it!
Will give it a go Andrew. Lots of people have a range of views on the Tyson thing, but will try and make time to put mine out there, Thanks for the ask.
Fran Sands thank you so much! I appreciate the knowledge you put out!
Coach I got a question
LOPEZ vs LOMA
who you got?
Good
Coach can you make a dedicated video talking about the stance at 5:20 ?
I'm talking about the one where the rear foot is pointing at probably 120 - 135 degree. Does the front and rear heel alignment still holds true in that position because for me it's a big uncomfortable when my rear leg's toe is pointing backwords.
Thanks. Will put some thought into that, good suggestion
Don't be sorry for being awesome!!
Hope you have been doing well during the pandemic, Coach. Stay safe!
Thank you, you too👍
I wanna trained by you personally man. I'm such a fan. I want to be one of the GOATs :(
Coach any name of pro boxers or even amateur boxers that fight at the stance that you talked about at 5:20 ?
This will really help me in understanding this stance deeply.
In the amateurs - Mario Kindelan of Cuba...wonderful fighter 👍
@@myboxingcoach Thanks a lot coach!
I was able to find the fight where he uses this stance mentioned by you against Amir Khan.
Here's the link in case someone needs, I'm sharing the link with the time stamp where you can see the stance mentioned clearly:

Love the video fran great ideas and message 🙏🏻
Thanks mate, and thanks for taking the time to comment
Fran Sands my first CZcams comment ever :)
@@londonlefthook Cheers bud, that's a bit of an honour for me then ;-)
@@londonlefthook Just subbed your channel, will keep an eye on that, well done for putting some good stuff out there mate.
Fran Sands nice one thanks fran 🙏🏻
Fran. Most beginners start coached to fight 1 way. Is it prudent to learn boxing as a 12yr old both left n right stance over a year with elementary. I think ok. Thoughts please?
No harm. I like to get them to a competent level in their 'natural' stance, and them encourage them to try the other stance if they like. Most want to for the challenge.
what a great video, what do u recommend for drilling these pointers in!?
Thanks pal. Across all of them really, it's a set of principles that can guide any drill you do
If you have any knowledge of the cross guard such as the one used by archie moore, could you make a video on this topic please? There is very little information out there on it.
Old School. I'll put some thinking into that, although it's not a defence I coach to be hinest...I have always been curious though :-)
Speed > strength or Strength > Speed
Should i be on the balls of my rear feet even when i throw my lead hooks or upercuts?
Thank you so much!
I think so, that's what I coach. The foot will flatten from time to time, but as a principle stay up I think.
Where is your Gym located?
Liverpool, UK
One of your recommended channels, World Class Boxing, says to plant the backfoot to have power. They tech having the backfoot planted the majority of the time. You say to never do it. Comments?
Mobility is more important in the amateurs compared to the pros. Those videos that Tom covers looks at great pro fighters and the pro game favours power over mobility in general. If you looked at great amateurs my view is that it is a different story.
@@myboxingcoach That's a very important detail, I suppose others would intuitively know that, but I had no idea when I was watching your video. What you're teaching is for amateurs like me. Makes sense.
Such a shame that you're not able to coach your students. I can't wait for full training to restart, either.
Do you know a lad called Shaun barbarakis
Yes. I was his coach for a long time. You boxed him?
I love you one day I’m going to meet you 💪🏾
7:10 so I train mma and martial art since I was 6 Iam 16 year old
My boxing need to be more correctedc
Would u like to take and train me in your gym for free??
I want be fighter thats my only dream in this life And I am training everyday day
I watched most of your videos
Maybe all of your footwork videos and studied em
Becz I am really interested in em
So would u like to build me up coach ?
Sadly I broke my foot and now I can't practice this :(
Sorry to hear that, put it on a list, your foot will be healed soon enough👍
