Swapping The Miata From a Getrag 260 to a ZF 5-Speed Transmission

  • FAQ: The original reason I went with the KMiata Getrag 260 kit over the ZF kit was so I could keep the Miata differential, since the Getrag 5-Speed has wider ratios. Now that I'm swapping over to the V8Roadsters Getrag G80 differential, with much taller ratios available (down to 3.23), I wanted to get the ZF 5-speed in there since it's newer, stronger, and shifts better. I went with the 5-Speed over the 6-Speed due to the mounting being easier, the transmission is lighter, much easier to find, and about 1/4 the cost. Also - for those asking about the vibration please watch the last 30 seconds of the video.

      There was nothing wrong with the Getrag; and I'd still prefer those ratios. But yes the ZF shifts real nice.

    From your recent videos on the vibration issue I was very surprised to hear you say that you thought it was in the driveline, not the transmission. Now you swapped this in but taking it up to speed to see how bad it vibrated wasn’t the first thing you did. It is as if you didn’t want the transmission to be the cause.
    Glad to hear it is fixed though. You are an inspiration to a lot of guys who want to tinker with their cars.

    hey Greg, I forgot to Inform you I did a spectrum analysis on the audio from one of the vibration videos, and I found the vibration is the same frequency as the driveshaft. The only thing you hadn't touched was the diff, correct? I believe the vibration may have been caused by the diff pinion.

    hi greg i think its your adapter, from the transmisson to the driveshaft, you cut that alinement tap off, i'm pretty sure bmw has put it there for a reason, to keep the driveshaft true to the transmisson output flange :) aaaaand big big fan from denmark :)

    Any chance the engine/tranny/diff mount bushings are causing the vibration? I believe I saw somewhere that if the bushings have different densities you can develop a weird harmonic/vibration. The bushing densities for all the drivetrain mounts should be the same?

    What oil are you using on the ZF ? in currently swapping my miata and the gearbox makes noises, reading online people say its because of the Oil, some people recommend to use ATF oil. wanted to hear from you experience.

    how far does the drive shaft stick out of the transmission? and if you want to see if the drive shaft is the vibration problem...get a hose clamp and put it around the drive shaft near the diff yoke. try it in the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions to see if the vibration minimizes or goes away...💪

    Just got my zf 5 speed with 175k miles on it and the previous owner just had the detents professionally redone. Im considering redoing all the seals. Think this is something i can tackle myself or should i take it to a shop?

      3600lbs and 400lbs of torque, and I'm sure it takes some abuse to break it. I'm not too worried, the diff I removed was intended for 110ft-lbs of torque and I haven't broken it yet 😆

      It's a 5 but the quality really goes to trash as it gets darker and it tries to compensate

      Flywheel is custom on this setup already, otherwise I would definitely go twin disc for the revs and holding power (like my previous setup)

      @@Frog_man007 IRP now offers the adapter plate to run their BMW shifter in a Miata, that's the setup I'm on now. The Miata 6-speed can handle that level of torque as long as it's not abused, I would give that a try. It's cheaper and easier to keep the Mazda setup in place, and a much better shifting experience IMO. But at the point of breaking 6-speeds, the BMW setup is a good option

      @@MRTuning704 6 gears aren't really necessary, I can always go to the ZF 6-Speed if I change my mind. People are drag launching ZF's at 1000whp without issue 🙂
