Genius record from Prince, incorporating lines from the movie and showcasing the duality of Batman and Joker.

This is from the Batman movie soundtrack. Prince wrote, composed, played on and produced the entire album. What you are hearing on "Bat Dance" are snippets from the actual classic Batman film. The Batman soundtrack was a huge deal when it came out (which stayed no.1 for several weeks on the charts). This song is also one of Prince's no. 1 singles. Fun track and video. And yeah, Prince was a huge Batman fan. First song he learned to play on piano was the 1960's Batman TV series theme.

This movie is one of my favorites just because of the incredible people involved. Tim Burton directed this Batman movie, and gave it that signature style of his. Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo and Nightmare Before Christmas fame wrote the score. Prince wrote/performed all the songs. As for acting, Michael Keaton will always be "my" Batman, and arguably Jack Nicholson's Joker is the best character. RIP Prince.

This 1000%. If anyone asks Michael Keaton IS Batman and Jack Nicholson of the best Joker.

The whole album is just so good, not many artists have the ability to write, produce, and play all the instruments on their tracks...the Batman soundtrack was one of 5 movie soundtracks he was the main producer and musician for. Purple Rain(won an oscar for best movie soundtrack), Under the Cherry Moon(Parade), Batman, Grafitti Bridge, and Girl 6 which was a 90s Spike Lee movie

Great reaction! I'm happy you enjoyed this. Prince's Batman Soundtrack album spawned three videos that I know of: "Batdance," "Partyman," and "Scandalous." Pleas React to the other two. (And you can thank me later for the "Scandalous" recommendation. Great ballad, plus I think you will find Prince was a whole snack in that one.)
This was the jam when it came out in 1989. "Batdance" was Prince's fourth #1 single according to Wikipedia. And as usual, Prince was pushing the envelope musically, meshing what sounds like 2-3 different songs, and incorporating elements of several songs he wrote during this time period. (IIR Prince was the first artist, or one of the first, to incorporate dialog from a film into a song, as he did with this track.) Understand, that Prince was always challenging norms, regularly throwing curve balls at his audience. And by and large he was loved for it,, because he took us in new and unexpected directions. He released a new album every year in the '80s but for one, and we could always count on him giving us a banger with each album. But I've always said the most predictable thing about Prince was his unpredictability. It made him a novelty for many, but endeared many a lifelong fan/fam to him for his risk-taking, his unconventional and experimental leanings, artistic vision, and sheer breadth of his musicality. (We also just genuinely loved--and still love--his music. )
Prince embraced the duality of the Batman/Joker trope, fusing them together in this video as a half-and-half "Gemini" character. Gemini--also his astrological sign--starts off a little wild, more of the joker in him, but toward the end of the video, the character has a crisis of conscience, listens to his inner Batman, and chooses to destroy the electric chair. Prince revisits the theme of duality, and the eternal struggle of good vs evil, throughout his music long after this era (1989). I imagine it resonated with him as he vacillated on occasion between overt sexuality/sensuality and religious piousness in his writing.

This was on the soundtrack for the first Batman movie from 1989, he did the whole soundtrack. Michael Keaton played Batman, Jack Nicholson played the Joker, and Kim Bassinger played Vickie Vale in the movie, all those voices you hear in the song are their parts in the movie. The ladies that marched out in the video represent Vickie Vale from the movie. It was a big deal , the first Batman movie, and then Prince doing the music, it was hot! 🔥🔥🔥😮

  • @tracyface69
    @tracyface69 Před rokem +14

Prince was a big Batman fan. The theme song to the show Batman was one of the first songs he learned to play as a kid. ‘Batdance’ is one of the songs from the Batman soundtrack. He provided the soundtrack for the Batman movie starring Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger. Kim played Vikki Vale in the movie. She and Prince dated for a spell during this time too. There is a companion video to this called ‘ Party Man’ that you should totally check out.

Great vid Jay!!! I love Prince and your reactions! You are so me when I watch anything Prince related! I love this video and Prince was a huge fan of Batman. The theme song was the first song he learned to play on the piano. You should definitely check out his video for Partyman Extended Version. He plays the same joker-like character in that video.
I personally think he plays a great Joker! Could have totally seen him doing great in a movie! In fact, I recently heard that a Batman comic was released with Prince’s Joker character as the villain in the story. That’s epic! Anyway, great video!

Nice to see you having fun and dancing to this track, it's actually quite a strange and innovative one.
Back in 1989, it was a major hit, despite being so out of the ordinary. You could even hear it in the ambiance soundtracks in the supermarkets, yet being the absolute opposite to easy listening.
I love the fact that he used actual dialogues, and samples from the other songs on the same album ( the future, or Electric Chair. pssst, you're gonna love the live version for this one) for their rhythm, as if they were some kind of drums or bass parts. This is brilliant.
I had never seen the video until this very year. I'm not that fond of the choreography, but I love the parts were you can see him manipulating the keyboards and all technical stuff. Frankly , the whole video could have been only him running from one side to the other, manipulating those buttons, and a longer butt-kicking guitar or bass solo, and that would have been perfect.
side note: he's absolutely stunning with longer hair 😍 ( yes, he's absolutely stunning no matter the hairstyle, I know, but...)

To be fair, 3 of the songs were already written. He just needed to change some lyrics. But still, he had to re-produce them to fit the style. Still an accomplishment! I couldn't write a letter in 2 weeks! Lol the greatest, pure and simple

Great reaction video! The 60s Batman theme song was the first song he taught himself to play on the guitar, according to him. So he jumped at the opportunity to do this soundtrack (plus the album before this was TOO much genius -- it went over people's heads. He needed some hits and he got em!)

Ya the first Batman movie prince did the soundtrack. I believe all of it. Or at least 95%. Glade you enjoyed the video and song. It’s kinda a fun song, and it was so cool for its time. Love the movie sampling throughout the song. It all works for it well. I remember watching my cousins doing dance recital to this song. They dressed in the half suits and all. Like 30 girls all dressed in the joker Batman half suit. Switching sides depending the character being portrayed in the dance.

It's a shame Prince got so overshadowed by MJ (and blacklisted by the corporate media machine). Prince could play 37 instruments, arraigned & produced all of his tracks and could still sing & dance with the best of them while rocking out with is guitar and wearing 10 inch platform heel boots lol.
