    9:35 hey Scott, you were in around the Barrio Martha Quesada, a big backpacker neighborhood if I'm not mistaken. Lots of city history in that part of Managua. It's said Howard Hughes lived nearby at the Intercontinental. Guy Lombardo even wrote a song "Managua, Nicaragua's a beautiful town..." 😅

    My cousin lives in that high rise building and it's really nice. The surrounding neighborhood is nice as well.

      Hey, hook us up with a tour! Yeah, it's a great area. Lots of nice condos on the street, too.

    Ah, Carretera Masaya where neighborhoods such as Los Robles, Villa Fontana, Viejo Santo Domingo, Las Colinas, El Cortijo de la Sierra dot along the highway...

    I went to this Convention Center on June 2022, due to a 'Fairy about Environment' school tour in when it where showing things like Recycling, Light Polution, etc.
    I bought a few stuff from that fairy, it was one of my best moments of 2022 there.
    It was raining heavily at that day, like around from 1 PM until 3:30 PM

    Are any of the lakes inside of managua good for fishing and/or swimming?

    How long of a walk between the Hilton and the Intercontinental Hotel? As for crossing the street, designated cross walks or cross at your own risk?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It's like "across the street", but realistically it's a huge highway and it probably takes ten minutes. Even though you could probably scream from one to the other. These are big hotels so even "across the street" takes a few minutes. But when you are there, they look right at each other. It's almost as close as two large hotels could be.
      As for crossing the street, why not both! LOL There are definitely crosswalks, but it's definitely scary, lol. People try not to hit you, they are courteous. But it's hectic and it's not a super easy crossing. I've done it, but it's the kind of crossing where I turn off the camera while doing it.

    I'm impressed that you're able to record openly in Managua. I have walked those streets so many times that I've lost count, but I don't do so with a camera or phone out where people can see them and make me more of a target for theft.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog

      Right, and hopefully people understand that I'm trying to show that walking isn't as dangerous as people think and that I'm clear that doing so alone, not paying attention, with a camera is foolish :)

      @@ScottAlanMillerVlog I agree completely that walking around the streets of Managua isn't as dangerous as many think--as long as they understand what factors make doing so more dangerous and avoid doing these things. For example, I've learned that certain neighborhoods are more dangerous than others, and so it's best to avoid these neighborhoods. I've learned that walking around at night (especially late at night) is far more dangerous. I've learned that wearing jewelry or nice watches or carrying a nice camera or cell phone or having a wallet that shows in your pants is a good way to draw unwanted attention. I've learned that it's much safer to walk around during the days and times when most people are at work then it is to do the same on the days when most people are off work and are drinking or doing drugs (cuando andan de vago). And I've learned that you can get a good sense for if you walking in a safe area or not by the presence (or absence) of women and children in the street. When you see them out, you know that it's safe, but if the street is vacant and quiet: watch your back.

      Exactly. And really that applies to all cities. That's kind of a universal thing. If you were in NYC, the same applies. Women and children on the street, you are safe. Never flash jewelry or fancy products in public. I actually wonder why jewelry exists (beyond the cheap fake stuff) because you can't use it in any situation where you'd want to. It's so dumb.

      @@ScottAlanMillerVlog Large cities from all over the world share this; I agree. The reason that I highlighted Managua is to set it apart from other cities in Nicaragua (not from other large cities around the world). When I'm in Nicaragua, I walk everywhere at all hours. My experience doing so has taught me that I can get away with a lot more in smaller more rural cities/towns than I can in the capital. The locals from smaller towns that I talk to concur. They all understand that the risk of being mugged in significantly higher in Managua. Something I found funny is that there is no consensus from locals in Managua about which barrio is the most dangerous. Those living within dangerous barrios often argue that this is untrue. My guess is that this stems from them naturally avoiding times and activities that would lend themselves to danger. Most know to be inside by dark and to wake up early and get all of their errands/work done in the morning. I've explored even the most dangerous parts of Managua on morning walks, and never had a problem. I wouldn't recommend trying to do the same around midnight. In contrast, I could walk around Moyogalpa (on Ometepe) as late as I wanted without ever feeling like I was in danger, and the same goes for the rural areas around Condega. The rural people would tease me by saying "You walk like you're from Managua", because I'd stare straight ahead and walk quickly and with purpose. Managua is a beautiful vibrant city that I enjoy exploring on foot. People should just be aware that it's riskier to do so (under certain circumstances) when compared to the rest of Nicaragua.

    We drove by Managua and the city has plenty of big buildings and office spaces. The city in my opinion seemed fairly empty and buildings seem to be hardly occupied. Has that been your experience Scott?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I think that it is safe to say that about the entire country. Even SJDS is full of abandoned buildings, lots, homes, etc. There was a building craze and since then both expats have left and the population has decreased. The demand for homes and office space have declined since the peak leaving empty stuff all over. Offices are empty the world over these days as well.
