What's WRONG With The Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach?!

  • So what's wrong with the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and does it break down as often as reports suggest? Or is it a load of nonsense which has been exaggerated for clicks? Join Scott in this video as he talks through the complex ride that is the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach breaking down why you'll sometimes see this roller coaster stopped at 50ft and sometimes 200ft, why a ride being stopped is not always a break down, why wheel compounds have such a big impact on daily operations and so much more!

    Former Ride Op from 2001 here.
    There now being 3 different speed wheels is new to me, as are the wheel checks during operating hours (they used to be done when we were doing the block checks at 7am).
    When I was there, they had just introduced the "fast wheels" for use on windier days. As it takes time to change the wheels, BPB decided to outfit 1 train with those wheels, and the other 2 would remain on the original compound wheels, hence there would never be a 3 train service ever again.
    This way, they could ensure The Big One could be run on most days - Nice days would be 2 trains, and windier days would be the faster single train, though there were days when it could not be run at all due to the wind.
    There are 2 other reasons for e-stops on The Big One that you forgot to mention.
    1 is when the wind suddenly changes speed and/or direction that could cause a train to valley. Providing the train is still on the Lift hill, the computers are able to stop the lift.
    The other reason is to do with the computers... Yes, computers. The Big One has 2. Both receive the same data from all sensors and have to agree on the data. If they do not agree, it is known as a handshake failure, and the ride will e-stop. This is designed that way and is not a fault, but a safety measure. For example, 1 computer may think train 1 has passed the mid-course block brakes so train 2 can leave the lift, but the other computer may disagree, so for safety, the e-stop system activates.
    I do agree that BPB need to be more open and honest about e-stops when they happen. Even back in 2001, they just wouldn't be honest.

      I thought the fast and slow wheels became a thing in the 90s?
      I believe there’s a number of reasons 3 train ops were scrapped in 2001, shame really but it is what it is. An efficient 2 train service would be fine.
      I’ve never heard of the lift hill automatically cutting out due to high winds before, but I’ve seen a few people say that today.

    • @danpmbo
      @danpmbo Před 2 měsíci

      Former charge hand of the ride here, there is no sensor that stops the train at the top of 'A block' laymen's terms the lift hill, due to wind.
      for it to stop at the top of 'A block' it's usually sensors at bbcs1 or 2 laymen's 'mid course break run' would have to be flagged 'occupied' in order for the ride to automatically stop the train there this was a regular occurrence during 3 train operations rarely seen or triggered by that situation today.
      During normal running 3 trains when the train on a block reaches 3 quarters up the lift hill and the train Infront was not clear the lift would auto slow to a crawl for around 15 seconds ten or 12 anti roll back clicks if the train in front cleared block before the end of that cycle the train on the lift would be auto released, if it didnt clear for whatever reason be valley or estop in block break then the train would stop at the top of the lift hill and the dl40's would examine whats gone on and where the trains are, once complete and the dl40's have timed out the operators can then clear the offending block reset the breaks and carry on normal operation. There is definitely no wind shut down sensor!

    When Shockwave at Drayton opened in 1994 it had 3 different hardness polyurethane wheel sets, the harder the compound the faster the car used to go round (also made it very noisy), the fastest the trains completed the track in its first year was 28 seconds (from leaving hill back to braking section). This used to give just under 1 and half minutes to load the second train in the station. After the first season the trains had to run on softer compound polyurethane due to noise complaints from its first season.

    Not a ride tech by any degree, but as a past contracting engineer working proudly at the pleasure beach, both in and out of season, it gave me a prime view of the Big One all year round.
    To hear all these people complaining about it breaking down again, is just utter nonsense!! They are only trying to headline themselves!
    A good few years ago on a dark illuminations night, on a luckily quiet night, I was absolutely honoured to get 3 rounds on the Big One, one after another!
    Stunning view especially during the illuminations, with pitch black backdrop of the sea.

    Really interesting. I’d be interested to know what the various “compounds” are and how different formulations affect the ride experience.
    Wheels are generally polyurethane (PU) but PU is such a versatile material. PU is a thermoset created by the reaction between polyols and isocyanates. The choice of polyol and isocyanate - not to mention catalysts or other additives - can massively change the PU’s characteristics. PU can be a solid compound like rollercoaster wheels, a rigid foam like insulating panel board (used a lot in theming and rock work because it’s easy to sculpt), and also as the foam in cushions and mattresses.
    I, for one, would be really interested in seeing a video on this one day.

    This is really interesting, Scott. Geat video. I'm sure the Big One is reliable. Sadly, the one trip we did to Pleasure Beach was during that really hot spell in July 2022 and the Big One was closed cos of the heat for most of the 2 days we were at the park. We waited almost 2 hours on the first morning to ride, zero communication from anyone while the train went around a few times and was parked on the lift hill for ages. We did get to ride once, sadly it really was so dull and forceless it felt disappointing after the long wait with no shade in that heat. Still it was good to ride and it's nice to see an iconic ride like this still going strong. Hope it has plenty more years.

As you've pointed out, the ride is 30 years old, and located in an area known for some unpredictable weather. I agree that it probably needs a new computerised system to be implemented to help minimise any unexpected stoppages.

If it detects wind at a certain speed and direction, the big one will also stop the train if it's on the lift hill as if the wind is a certain speed and direction the train cannot make it to the mid brake run and will roll back causing the park a massive headache. New track feels different but OK too me.
      I miss the smoothness on the sweeping helix return where it's like picking one of those supermarket trolleys with wheels that don't turn together! .
      Compare that to the return section on the Vekoma Millennium as it passes the twist at Fantasy Island ( Scott has just done a vlog on this) which I think is the most exhilarating finish of any steel coaster in UK imo .

    I’m no expert but I would assume the ride stops because the computer that controls the ride because it has detected a fault somewhere so stops the ride to prevent injury to both the ride and its passengers.
    I also think because of the rides location and its exposure to the elements, maybe the elements play havoc with the sensors triggering false alarms.
    Could be one of a billion things but all in all, it’s still in good condition and has plenty more life in it!
    It could also be a software fault

    • @yourexperienceguide
      @yourexperienceguide  Před 2 měsíci +1

  • @SilverWolvesScarletForestSnow

    See what I do not get is when they first looked into retracking it, why didn't they look into reprofiling it to make it more wind resistant? They could have potentially made it taller too with a reprofiled lift hill and fixed the terrible first drop that breaks your neck if you sit on the back. At the very least couldn't they have put some sort of booster system to get it over the bit where it can valley? They've done nothing but retrack it and the end result is it's a 50:50 chance to if it's going to be operating or not when you go. For me that is unacceptable for a ride....... Like how you can never go on Valhalla unless it's a very hot day.... well we have about 3 days of the year where it's nice enough then lol. If all that would cost too much or isn't possible because the manufacture don't exist any more or whatever, then build something new, whack a 300ft B&M there to replace it and reclaim the UKs tallest coaster stat.

    • @yourexperienceguide
      @yourexperienceguide  Před měsícem

      Retracking is/was about replacing worn track sections that are becoming beyond repair, and not safe for use.
      When it comes to doing the turnaround they should definitely consider lowering it or changing the profile to help it stay open more on windy days.
      First drop is excellent and should be left well alone.

    Not much you can do about how people react to the block checks
    As for the wheel checks, I think it would help if they were performed without guests aboard any of the trains. Leaving a loaded train 50ft up a lift hill only adds fuel to the fire with these sensationalist articles, the publications would care less if the train was clear of guests as they can't throw around the "guests stranded" line and whatnot. Plus, the ride being checked by maintenance in operating hours could rub guests aboard the ride the wrong way, no matter what the staff tell them there and then. I totally understand how one could perceive this to be very sketchy. It's also just a bit of a needless inconvenience to the people onboard, especially if they haven't been warned prior that these checks will delay how soon they are able to leave the ride

The ride was closed the previous day due to really bad weather and was closed most of the Saturday, think it opened at 3pm, but boy those engineers were all over that ride the whole day, they basically spent the entire day trying to get that ride going for night time and a busy day for the park. they could have easily gave up and just went na, we cant do this today, to much resource etc, but they didnt. YT gives you 3 strikes before they remove your channel so if someone (of any age) doesn’t learn their lesson after three times then they’ll face the consequences.
      I’m all for sharing others content but you can’t just steal it, you need to ask permission beforehand and go about it the right way because money, earnings impact, time and effort taken into account to create the content for someone to then just lift it with zero effort involved and expect zero consequence is naive
