- With the sequel "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" coming out on Netflix this week, we wanted to revisit the original "Beverly Hills Cop" from 1984 to see how it holds up 40 years later. This is the movie that made Eddie Murphy a global superstar, and it was a huge box office hit. But what do Christy and Alonso think of it today? (Hint: They don't agree with each other!) Murphy stars as a Detroit police detective who travels to Beverly Hills to solve his best friend's murder. Fish-out-of-water antics ensue. Directed by Martin Brest, written by Daniel Petrie Jr. Co-starring Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox, Lisa Eilbacher, Steven Berkoff and Bronson Pinchot in a scene-stealing supporting performance. For people that weren't around yet it must be hard to imagine how big of a super star Eddie Murphy was.
I'm of that age and yes yes, he was a humongous star back then. I couldn't understand why he took those horrific roles like Pluto Nash and Norbit

I have to tell you what Beverly Hills Cop means to me, a black male.
Because Hollywood rarely takes chances, the conventional thinking up to this point was that black actors COULD NOT be leading Men or open movies nationwide. That all changed after Beverly Hills Cop became the highest grossing movie ($235 million) of 1984.
And also in 1984, the two best selling albums were Michael Jackson's: Thriller, and later on that year, Prince's Purple Rain.
Those accomplishments that year were dreams my parents never thought could happen. But I wish I could have appreciated them more when I was a kid in 1984 than I do today.

Thriller wasn't even in the top 50 of bestselling albums in 1984 as far as I can tell.
(I had to check because since it was released in 1982, it would be wild if it also was nr.1 in 1984.)
“Disturbing the peace? I got thrown out of a fucking window, what’s the charge for getting thrown out of a moving car, huh? Jaywalking” I love this movie.
That is absolutely my favourite line from that original movie. I think it's because it's so shocking that they did that.
Hmm. I don't usually disagree much with Alonso, but I don't agree with him on this movie having the amount of homophobia that he sees.
For being a film from the 80's (particularly an action film) it's remarkably progressive in the way it handles male relationships. For instance throughout the movie either Axel or another male character tells another, "I love you", with complete sincerity and earnesty without the movie making it awkward or try to play it for laughs, especially since it's an action comedy. That always stood out to me. It was something unusual and intentional from a mainstream action movie during Ronald Reagans 80's.
Funny how Alanso didn't pick up on that.
I highly recommend Trading Places. I love how it combines Capitalism and Christmas in the 80's. To this day, Trading Places is my favorite Christmas movie!

The joke was not about AIDS. It was “herpes simplex 10”. Ramone was very clear about that.
If if that dude can't handle herpes jokes he probably shouldn't be reviewing movies from the 80s.

It’s weird to see Alonso object so strongly to the homophobia in this movie to where he won’t rate the film but he doesn’t seem equally offended by the blatant homophobia in John Hughes films which he’s a big fan of

Often times, and I hate to 'go there' but must, white male gays are *some* of THEE MOST bigoted/biased citizens that there are. I've seen it a LOT throughout the years.
Be it flat-out racism &/or implicit biases,, this is how a significant segment (not all) of that community operates.

Saw this for the first time last year and thought Murphy was incredibly charismatic. So refreshing after growing up with him in his Dr Doolittle and Donkey phase

This is a gay revenge movie where Axel is out to get the guys who killed the love of if his life, Mikey, the one that got away.
Nobody will convince me that's not true.
That's why Axel doesn't give a F about the women anywhere, even in th strip club, and why the scene with Mikey is so heartbreakingly sincere.
That is an intriguing theory!
Alonso's criticism is so interesting to me. I really dont want to argue with his opinion, I appreciate him making it, also I TOTALLY see what he's getting at, watching the film recently the joke stood out as something a bit too raw, especially for now. But given the context of the time, and lets be honest Murphys other output around that time (stand up/48 hrs) I think you would be looking for something to complain about to not like the film for this one scene alone.
Again to Alonso's credit he did say he also thought there was nothing in the movie, but I really do think a -ve view of this movie boils down to "do you like Eddie Murphy?" Which if not, fair enough.
I put Alfonso distaste for the movie down to the fact he doesnt like Eddie, which if you're particularly sensitive to homophobia and have seen Delirious is totally understandable (especially as thats where the REAL aids jokes are).
I dont want to speak for Alfonso and i'm probably off the mark, but I write all this to avoid the very defensive retort of "he doesnt get a joke" and to be more empathetic, and maybe talk about the real issues surrounding Eddie and how people see him.
FWIW I love the movie and as a black man, Eddie was inspiring to me growing up, but I recognise he's had problematic qualities

What people seem to forget is that Eddie Murphy was only 22 years old when he made this movie. Twenty-two, can you believe that? And he wasn´t a "brat" making teen movies, he carried this film almost all by himself. I still think it´s one of the funniest films ever. Sure it has some problems when you watch it now, but it was made 40 years ago and it´s better than most action films today.

I did not know this part was written for Sylvester Stallone. If Sylvester Stallone accepted the part, I think Beverly Hills Cop would not have the same tone or be as successful.

lol, you know, Crazy Frog used to be in the Computer Animation message boards. When I went into animation, the young animators would share it, I'd imagine someone bought it, and then they like reissued it into a game. But it used to be a little animation video to show off good skill sets in 2001..... but yeah, Alonso is right, not much is going on.
Making white people feel uncomfortable was the JOKE! It was the brilliance of Eddie Murphy.
Also, where was the AIDS joke? It was about herpes.. Did I miss it?

Can't remember much about this one, except my mom's only comment as we walked out of the theater circa 1984: "They said the "F" word 57 times" (or however many times it was).
I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago. Maybe it's just watching it with fresh eyes and the fact that there's been adequate time between when it was made and now (I tend to love a lot of cheesy 80's movies that I probably wouldn't had I been alive back when they came out), but I absolutely loved this movie. The whole thing is just so exceedingly charming thanks largely in part to Murphy's performance. The score is so bouncy and fun. I just think for a sort of light action comedy it's just extremely well made.

Agree with Alonso on The Golden Child. "I just want some chips" is everything great about his persona and career in a single 30 sec clip.
Yes, this movie was written for Sylvester Stallone, but Sylvester Stallone had a falling out with the producers because he wanted to remove all of the comedic elements from the script.
That's when the producers parted ways with Sylvester Stallone. So Sylvester Stallone took the script for Beverly hills cop, rewrote it and produced it as a movie called COBRA.
So hard to imagine anyone but Eddie Murphy in this role, but definitely not Stallone!
Murphy had some run in the 80s he did 48 Hrs, Trading Places, BHC, BHC 2 and Coming to America the only misfire in the middle was Golden Child
Golden Child was fantastic in my book.
I agree w/ Christy's assessment and I still enjoyed it, just like I do "Fletch" which is Chevy's movie to do bits in with a typical 80's bad guy plot around it. Alonso may have picked at it too much.
The soundtrack was great. The movie overall was just good dumb fun, but for me the part I remember most fondly is the semi chase at the beginning.
Such an exciting way to start the movie!

Funny. Fun. Tight storytelling. Great characters. Great performances. Every character means something and has a moment.

I still enjoy it. I saw it when I was 11 back in 1985 with my mom and dad and Eddie was amazing. Forget the fact that Axel is too young to be a police detective (He would have been a patrolman at best) or that Axel wouldn't have been a cop to begin with because his past is full of red flags, it is just a lot of fun. Now Beverly Hills Cop II and III? Not so much. Hopefully, Axel F will return the fun.

Perhaps you missed our Axel F review.
But Axel expressing genuine love for Billy and Taggert during the climax, where he literally says "I love you Billy", isn't something worth mentioning? This type of male affection isn't even shown today but sure lets omit that and focus on all the thing this movie does wrong with homophobia. Alanso literally has the weakest glass chin under all that beard.
BHC is a fantastic film, Murphy is naturally funny. I wish they made more films like it these days.
So what's interesting for me is that I actually didn't see the first one till I was I wanna say maybe 10/11. I saw the second one however when I was 8/9 (because it's directed by Tony Scott it just visually looks the best). I watch the original every once and. while and it's just Eddie firing on all cylinders. Everything he'd done before that got him ready to just take charge and run with it. It was also the blue print for how to make an action comedy have a balanced tone (because if you look at something like "48 Hrs" Eddie is the reason that thing can be even considered a comedy). You have the moments where it needs to be serious and the action is well staged and you also got a lot of jokes/bits that still hold up to this day. Outside of Axel Foley favorite character is Billy. The moment where Judge Reinhold is asking John Ashton if he’s seen “Butch Cassidy and Sundance” I was like “oh shut up Billy” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It finally happened, Alonso is cancelled.

Watched this yesterday for the first time. Really enjoyed it quite a bit. Eddie absolutely made this movie though. If Stallone had starred in it, it wouldn’t be nearly as well regarded.
can you also review the first bad boys from 1995 Michael bay' first film. you like it right it was visually coherent and you could tell what was going on right and the plot also made sense its the best in the franchise.

As much as I enjoy Beverly Hills Cop 2, I always thought the comedy became secondary to the action. Not nearly as funny.

I heard john landis was one of the directors they wanted but he didn't like the script but eddie was the one who made the movie work, so he did the third one cause he thought the script for that one was bad too but I have eddie in it so we can make this work right?

His SNL skits IIRC were hilarious. Mr Robinson’s Neighborhood. Haven’t felt any urge to rewatch this now or even 10 or 20 years ago not really feeling it for Axel F I guess I’m old and get off my lawn.
First and foremost, congratulations on hitting 30,000 subscribers. Second, I am in total agreement with Alonso. I had never seen this picture until February of this year. I had missed it for various reasons. I felt ambivalent towards the story because I had seen so many different variations of this trope and story in the last 30+ years. It felt very much been there, done that. Also, the punchlines are anticlimactic to me because I had heard the joking dialogue spoken incessantly and impersonated badly in social situations. I may have my 80s kid card revoked with this next statement, but, I don't understand the love for this movie. One last thing! Like Alonso's shirt states, I, too, miss R.E.M.

40th Anniversary of Purple Rain coming up. That was a definite moment in time. A tiny androgynous black man became the Venn diagram centerpoint for pretty much every cross-section of society. I'd love to see you guys tackle that one.
Alonzo is correct. This movie is about a blue collar policeman in gritty Detroit going to the chic rich Beverly Hills and him reacting to different btw the two cultures. It’s not my favorite Murphy movie during the 80s. Trading Places and Coming to America are by far funnier than this one.

To answer Christy's question at around 10:40, he is not going to work in the role anymore, and the movie is going to bomb. It may get tons of viewers on Netflix because 1) the Beverly Hills Cop brand name, and 2) people will be bored on week nights and have nothing better to do so they will check it out and maybe turn it off. Typical case of cash grab from a popular established brand name that nobody is going to care about in a few years and most may even forget was made. Coming 2 America anyone?
The original Beverly Hills Cop is one of those strange anomalies that I can admit is a cinematic classic without being a very good movie.
I feel like it's very pathetic when people that are older than me are woke. You literally grew up in this era, and you can't handle herpes joke? You really shouldn't be reviewing these movies. Stick to your safe space movies

The guy changes the dialogue in scene to something different to trash the film. The is the dumbest film review I've ever watched. Why does CZcams recommend garbage?
I watched this for the first-time about 3 months. I thought it was fine, but I didn't really see what was so special about it. Siskel and Ebert reviewed the film back in 1984 and both gave it a thumbs down -- pointing out that the plot was bland and Murphy was trying to make humor out of nothing. This movie actually earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
