    3 thoughts...
    1. So many tackles around the neck
2, Those Phil Bennett sidesteps are beyond genius
    3. The sheer pace of Gareth Edwards - blimey.
Not just try of the century - they could play this game for the next 500 years and not come close.

All Blacks dangerous tackling around the neck would have got stopped today. Barbarians were so tough didn't sway their passing. Acceleration by Edwards at the end. Amazing, pure sport.

The commentator was indeed fabulous - as a fly-half for Cardiff, Wales, the Barbarians and British Lions. Not forgetting a season in Ireland with Bective.
I have always been a great fan of Gareth, but I would not like to decide on whether he was better than the commentator.

And that final pass to a wonderfully anticipative Edwards was like the perfect baton change in an Olympics relay final.

There will never be a better try than this one! I read in the Telegraph a few years ago that when Phil B picked up the ball to dance around the All Blacks, Gareth Edwards was thinking "just kick it off the park!". It's just as well he didn't. What a score!

I was there, on the West Terrace towards which Edwards was running. We were so far away from the beginning of the movement we did not really appreciate quite how superb it all was as they ran towards us. I have watched this many times over the years and there are still moments when you are sure that someone is going to drop the ball. What I also notice is how many of the All Black tackles would these days be judged to be illegally high. It was a different game then...

What a great try, considering many facts, no professional players or coaches back then, fields we not a perfect, boots had nails holding small sprigs, high tackle were not called back then unless they were coat-hangers, running from your goal line was unheard of back then and only executed recently, no video referee, forward passes were still against the law back then and still are now Wayne Barnes! I was only an 8 year old kid back when this outstanding TEAM try was scored and there are many amazing tries scored each year, this try would be in the top tries of the year in todays standard, especially considering all the above facts this makes it an even more an amazing try. Great to watch, as it brings back so many great memories. Cheers Bryce

No disrespect to All Black great Sid Going but I thought Gareth Edwards was the best half back in the world during the 1970s and one of the greats ever. Great passer, tactical kicker, and runner. He was the key to the Lions 1971 and 1974 series wins against the ABs and Boks. Had he made himself available for the Lions 77 tour of NZ then the series result may have been different.
