  • We have been hunting through the lull and it has been tough, but we do have some hunts to show you and we offer a few words of encouragement and maybe even advice for Thanksgiving week. I have been looking forward to this coming week all season. Hunt safe and good luck.

    I targeted a specific buck last year. (First time) collected info, and last Saturday I put myself in its path. No harvest, but put eyes on him and had about 40 minutes of heaven watching him cross the field beyond bow range. Exhilarating. Thanks for all the inspiration. I dreamt big- 👍 and will continue.

    Sorry about your hunt Carson. Props to you for doing everything in your power to recover that deer. It was a cool hunt and I thought it was neat watching him come to your grunts and stand there lip curling before rubbing that tree. Better luck to you in the future. You can pursue in Iowa by law as long as you have a blood trail and you leave your bow at the fence. You might have to call the game warden though with a tough landowner. I had a neighbor on my southern Iowa farm deny access. I didn't have to ask him, by law, but I did out of courtesy and he said no. Rather than cause a rift, I just let it go. It wasn't my deer and I am not sure it was hit hard enough to die anyway, so no big deal. But it was telling for him to deny access. He was kind of a jackass though.

    I pulled a camera just b4 u were looking @ that fawn. I had the perfect SE wind to do this & the same forked horn buck i spotted SE of me on my way out 2 mile bike ride but i wasnt hunting so i didnt have to drag my cargo cart . Almost 2 weeks up in a 🌳 & all that camera had on it was thar buck. One week b4 that 1/2 mile away that same buck bedded for a while 12 yards away under me. The Ghost with a big track hasnt shown himself to anyone or my camera. I have a 30 mile drive to another area come Friday morning in central MN. My area got blown out b4 i got to my 🌳 from a bowhunter who trampled through my area & he sure was shocked to see me @ the base of my tree packing up when he showed himself. It’s important on public land to work with others & let them know what your plans r. I won't be hunting that particular spot but i showed him a better way to access his area so he won't be walking early in the afternoon upwind of bedding. There is standing corn just SW of my area on private land. They mowed the 15 outside rows of it last week. So I'm going to setup close to bedding but a couple hundred yards from that 😅 corn far south from thst other hunter. I really need to shoot a doe & close to 🏡 the doe herd bedding off by houses on private land r nothing u can rely on. Corn is king this time of year. Thanks alot for the updates. Carsen as an Individual unarmed shooter of the wounded animal CAN NOT be prohibited from pursuing a wounded animal onto neighboring property with the intent to recover the animal. If faced with this again call the local game warden. There is nothing wrong with being a good and understanding neighbor and waiting until dark so as not to ruin another hunter's sit but 7 days later is unacceptable. Great channel by the way. I've read your articles for years Bill! Happy Holidays to you all!!

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci

      Technically, that is not true. He still has to be able to show proof that the deer went into the neighbor's land in the first place. Carsen was not able to do that because the blood trail dried up and ended before it got to the fence. It was only a hunch on Carsen's part where the deer went, but no actual proof. Also, not all states have the same law when it comes to crossing property lines.

    Question: you’re about to start riding or walking to an area you’re planning to hunt. You get a pic from cell camera that your target is on camera by your stand. What do you do? Give it 30 minutes… and go on in, hunt somewhere else, wait until daylight then walk in…. Appreciate some guidance as this has happened twice this year. Thanks in advance.

Or, as you state, you could go in after daylight and use your binos, but that doesn't mean you will see him before he sees you. Personally, I would just hunt somewhere else and save that spot. Good luck.

    IMHO the property owner not allowing Carsen to follow up on his buck is Bull$hit. The excuse of other hunters in the area doesn't fly, no reason not to allow Carsen to follow up in the dark if the true reason was "other hunters". I'm sure the "other hunters" would want Carsen to follow up on a mortally hit deer.......Why waste the animal in that situation?

I shot one of our other target bucks already during bow season. It’s a funny thing feeling like if the deer I’ve been hunting all year gave me a shot I wouldn’t take it now. Another wrinkle, the deer is most likely 4 and will most likely have another big growth year ahead if he survives.

      Their Verdigre and Zone 7 work well in the middle of the season and their heaviest stuff (Coldfjall) works well late season. These garments are not windproof, but they are super quiet and super comfortable. If it is really windy, you need a shell to keep the wind from blowing your heat away - but that is the case with any quiet Berber style outerwear. Bibs are key to staying warm late season. Full leg zips so you can carry and easily put it on at the tree. I really like the stuff. It blends well too. Here is the link to their site: codeofsilence.com/ Good luck.

    What if you're hunting big rugged country and you can't find any acorns and theirs no agriculture close by what should I focus on? It's big hardwoods with thick over grown fields.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci

      Daniel, I am not sure. You need to find a local biologist and ask them what kinds of local browse the deer prefer. That situation sounds really tough - without any concentrated food sources. I believe in that situation I would be hunting travel funnels and hoping for the best. Good luck.

      That's exactly how I set up for the opener of gun season here in Pennsylvania. I feel like I'm in the perfect spot to catch a buck traveling through. I love hunting benches and white oaks if the acorns are producing.

      But, keep in mind that Carsen had lost the blood trail short of that landowner's line and there was no actual proof that the buck even went in there. It was more Carson's hunch since he didn't find it anywhere else.

    Hey Bill, what is your thoughts on hunting with or around cattle? Do they wreck too much cover? Im looking at getting cattle, looks like you got rid of them! Your marketing is working, I now want a Hoyt setorri!

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I hear you on that Hoyt recurve. Cody loves that bow! Now I want one too! Who wouldn't if they shot a giant with three drop tines with it! I grew up hunting around cattle, but that was because there were cattle in nearly every woods back then. I do think that cows and deer don't really mix that well. The cattle eat just about anything edible in the timber and that isn't necessarily good for the deer. Also, deer don't like to occupy the same localized areas with the cattle herd - so when the cows move into an area, the deer there move out until the cows leave. As mentioned, they will live in the same farms together, but the whole time I am sure the deer are wishing the cows weren't there! Good luck.

      I live in mountains and I personally have watched cows go over 20 acres to run deer out of there pasture area. So I can say from my experiences cows and deer do not go together.

      Not without a blood trail leading into the neighbor's farm. In Iowa, you can't just go randomly searching someone's farm because you think your deer ran there. You need proof that it is hit and in there in order for the law to be on your side.

    You don't need permission from a land owner in Iowa to go after your deer.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci

      You do if you can't prove you are on an active trail. For example, you can't just show up and start walking around someone's farm without a very defendable reason. If you lose the blood trail somewhere and you think the deer may be on the neighbor's land, I don't believe that gives you the legal right to walk that farm. In that case, I would call the game warden to find out what you should do. I bet he says, "You need permission." Happy Thanksgiving.

    Nope what sucks young man is you had a open chipshot at less than 20 yards and you totally gut shot that buck for really no reason other than you did it your finger on the trigger . Trespass laws are there to keep people from just marching in and ruining someone else's hunt or just not being where they are not supposed to be. Ways to avoid this is to practice don't make bad shots keep gear up and do not hunt close to property boundaries you know will be problematic at best . The owner did what was best for his hunters and even retrieved your deer for you .End of story .One day you may own hunting land yourself and understand this .Maybe not .Just some critical words for you to ruminate on that you will find true.
