Interesting conversation about “no brown in town”. My understanding was that it referred specifically to brown leather shoes being for the country and black leather for in town.

  • @jeremyschipp

I would absolutely wear R.M Williams boots with a suit

Best segment yet! Enjoyable back-and-forth banter and insights, excellent topic and certainly some things to learns and consider. Look forward to the next one. I like that Austin and Chris are opposites in many ways yet seamlessly makes their viewpoints mesh.

  • @DaddySantaClaus

I love wearing my brown Donegal tweed suit in London.

  • @southern428

I'm living on the edge, Brown suit with boots 😅

The chemistry between Austin and Chris is so watchable, it's addictive. Surely sartorial history has been all about the breaking with convention and rules? Think about it; compare a well dressed gent from 1800 with his equivalent of 2023. The rules discussed here are a lot more nuanced and I too have broken most of them at some time or other. For me, as I suspect for most, it all comes down to aesthetic balance in the eye of the beholder - personal style. If to break `the rules' is likely to draw unfavourable attention or comment from others, that is where I, personally, draw the line - says he who embraced the colourful young men's fashions in the latter 1960s!😲 Today, my dress sense avoids fashion extremes (mutton dressing as lamb) and although I like to embrace sometimes bold colours, I am a much more conscious - and derive huge pleasure - in co-ordinating everything in detail. I take a lot of inspiration from these Rampley & Co videos and am now a happy customer. All said and done, what a dull sartorial world it would be if all men dressed alike and no one broke `the rules’.

I thought "no brown in town' referred to shoe color.

  • @khalarete2188

    Here's a rule I would not break:

  • @zorankojcic

Another great video, gents! Loved it! I was wondering, as you mentioned black is more formal color in terms of suits, what do you guys think of wearing a black suit during the day, as in a business suit?

i personally don't think black and navy looks nice. or any very dark colours with black. there is little contrast and to me it looks off. the only exception I make is for dark greys, because they act as a gradient transitioning into black.

  • @gentlemaninjapan1994

Different countries have different rules, people shouldn't really wear black here because it's for mourning. Really dark charcoal is the equivalent and worn by nearly everyone daily 😅

  • @Molach101

I often wonder if the "no black & navy" thing is quite specific to the USA, like "no brown in town" is to England & the City of London. If I imagine a stereotypical London city gent he's probably clad in black & navy head to toe. I've honestly never heard of "no black & navy together" as a rule here in the UK. I personally enjoy breaking the "no black & brown together" rule myself & I especially like pairing black with light warm neutrals like beige, tan, cream etc

  • @williamkazak469

I don't wear black except shoes. Navy is dark enough and black shoes are fine with navy. I do not wear a brown suit. I wear blazers now. No need for a suit in my current life. Brown suit???

  • @perryrobert8429

How about the rule of not wearing same colour of your hair above the shoes ? Always found that drastic

  • @brianmarks4121

Convention vs rule. I suggest there is a distiction.

  • @JRehak1962

Black and Blue - I first thought of the two characters from the movie "Dinner Rush" and how their demise came about. As regards clothing, I was instructed no solid blue jackets with black pants, and vice versa, no solid black jacket with blue pants.

  • @flyoverstateresident2890

    Tony Llama goes with everything.

  • @chrisberentson9602

Don't wear black tie before 6pm. Tell me I'm wrong

  • @RayLRhodes

I notice Austin is breaking a rule; he is allowing his tie to show below the button.
