    On my second Newfie Berner Cross... I've got him so he never needs a lead though it took a little work. No drool with the Bernese' s longer muzzle. People gasp with delight when they meet him and he's a total charmer. BUT I had to be firm with him in adolescence, I think it's important to say.

    Two of my most loved breeds. The Newfoundland I confess is my all-time favorite breed. Among so many other factors I love the shape of their big beautiful heads and also the shape and beauty of their eyes. However, the Bernese Mountain is maybe the most handsome breed of them all. But I love all dogs. I think I'm practically a dog myself in human form.

    I've had three Newfies. The little female(140#) was smart, fast, and loved to swim all day. The little male(145#) was a character but not particularly smart. The big male (165#) was absolutely fearless and loved to fish all afternoon. They all considered themselves lap dogs and would climb on whenever given an opportunity(like when I fell asleep). Very affectionate, goofy, and loyal dogs. Good Luck, Rick

      Hey Richard! (Nice name! ;) ) is there any difference between Newfoundland Males and females besides size, and what are they? Like do females drool less then males and or shed less? We are building a lake house and would love a Newfie for our kids around the lake water in case they need help, I love their calm family manner, we think they are beautiful dogs. My wife’s only hesitation is literally just hair on everything in the house and carpet and clothes, and the drool factor. Thanks for the info!

      @@richardhislop-harvestthena4882 Good questions and thinking. Newfies very widely in intelligence and personality. Our three came from a kennel that bred for good personality and tight mouths(to limit drooling). All three of ours were protective of my wife and son.
      All newfies shed like crazy in spring and fall. They shed a bit the rest of the time. They have to be groomed at least weekly or they develop mats in their fur which can become painful and infected. I put in a central vacuum with a grooming attachment to help handle it but, you still have to spend a couple hours with a rake(heavy duty comb) every two weeks. I still find newfie hair 12 years after the last one passed
      Most newfies are natural life guards. It is great for kids except when they want to swim and the dog won't let them. The newfies are also sensitive to their diets. Some popular dog foods do not give adequate nutrition and can cause health problems and change the color of their fur. With popularity has come rampant breeding of Newfies and congenital problems such as hip displacia are common.
      I wanted to get another but when I contacted the son of our old breeders, he had given up the kennel and there were no more available. They are great dogs, natural baby sitters, but they require a lot of care(we thought that they were worth it but, you may not). Good Luck, Rick

    Nice break down of 2 of my most favorite breeds. Have a couple or three questions, in your opinion. 1) How do either breed work as service animals? I know that they are not long lived as other breeds so that could be a factor. 2) You mentioned hot weather. How much hot outdoor temperatures can they handle for how long? 3) As I unfortunately live in a "warm" climate, can either breed get a spring haircut and have full hair by the time cold weather hits? Example: In the Summer it easily gets to 110° F and in the winter it can drop down to -25° F. I know, crazy temp swings. Thanks, great info!

      @@assistancepaws362 A service dog really takes a dog with a very strong personality, when my berner SD passed away I adopted my male newf in hopes of making him my new SD but he just didn't have the self confidence but he is still my best bud and his snuggles are the best. My new SD is a 3.5 yr old female saint bernard, I blew my leg apart in Iraq so I need a larger breed to help me up. Bernese mountain dogs make great SD because they are extremely smart, mine did so much for me. However the bernese has a demon they can't shake, they have a very high rate of contracting this rare cancer. My berner was likely from a puppy mill and I rescued her from being put down as a puppy. A berner mix will probably be my next after my saint passes. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out if you have anymore questions.

    As a former owner of a BMD and a current owner of 2 Newfie's (we've had 4) I want to point out another potential difference. BMD can be quite skittish or stand-offish of strangers. Our guy developed this as he got older to a really extreme behaviour issue. We learned that BMD's would haul the cart with the farmer to sell his goods, and the farmer would often put the money in the dog's collar and send him home. He was taught to avoid strangers on his journey. This was relayed to us by a dog trainer. Whereas Newfie's pretty much love everyone. Both very trainable and we've had certified water rescue, and therapy Newf's.

    What would you consider to be intense physical exercise? I like to go on long but low-mid intensity walks, around 3-4 hours, a couple of times a week. Would that be too much for a Newfie or a Berner to be doing consistently, do you think?

    • @patricklarocque1550
      @patricklarocque1550 Před 2 lety +1

      Way too much for a Newfie - shorter but more frequent would be the way, unless it involves water, which would not be as hard on the joints.Low and slow is the way of he Bernese, but they will take a 5 k walk with no problem. Just be aware that when they have enough, those are big dogs to move…

      I had a Newfoundland for almost 13 years. She was a Canine Friend or Pat dog so was %100 reliable with people. We always said she would show ant burglar where the valuables were. A visit from a strang looking man wanting to trim our trees showed us another side. Sh growled for the first and only time in her life and stood firmly between us until he left. It turned out the police were looking for him as he had abused some elderly people. I think they would guard if there was a need.

    I believe you have the guard dog incorrect. I have had 5 Newfs , one at a time. Yes , moat of the time they will block rather than be ready to attack. I had a female, she was over size at 165lbs. NOT overweight. My wife ran child. The dog was an outside dog. All the kids would greet her Mea in the morning and Mea would go lay down so she had a great view of them when the kids were outside. One day a teenager boy came to 4’ chain link fence. My wife has no idea of where Mea came from or the boy. Mea had her front paws on the top of the fence and was barking at the boy. This is much more of an attack profile than a block. Mea was a wonderful Newfoundland.

    What is defined as "extreme activity" ? I mean, if you think about a Chihuahua or Pomeranian pulling carts (never going to happen), for that kind of dog it's almost certainly extreme, so you'd get a Newf or Berner to make the extreme unextreme. I'm stumped; What could be above this extremity-removed task where extremity is replaced?
