    Years ago...we bought a D800 Terex(108k lb, or a D8L/D9N size) and a D9L(135k Lb...basically a D10N)...then while putting new undercarriages on both machines, once the Terex was done, we hooked a cable to it and drug the D9L around...easy right...the 9L had very little grousers left...and the Terex had Severe Duty Grousers, 6" tall...But, once the D9L had a new undercarriage, it would easily drag the Terex around...This was 1999...so for you youngsters...The Cat "R" series... D7R, D8R, D9R, 10R and 11R were just released in 1997, and Diff Steer was still pretty new. During that time, we also had a 1050C Deere on demo...good dozer, though it was basically a Liebherr painted yellow.

    I used to work at a power plant years ago and got to run their D8K. A coworker was running their new D8R that had just been purchased. He told me that he would push twice as much material as me and told me to do my best. He didn't know how to run the new machine so it was bogging down when he had a full push. I was easily keeping up with him. After I showed him how to manually shift and when to shift during the push, it was a different story. The 8K was in bad need of an engine rebuild but I would still take it over the new 8s had it been shown the proper love. It was an oldie but a goldie!

      The d8h is one of if not the easiest to repair dozers, im 31 and have been around them my whole life with a father who had a fleet of high horse 8s and an 8k. Long gone are the days of true cat mechanics when you could easily diagnose a cat on the fly. I still own and operate 2 1969 cat d8h 46a dozers on the daily. By far the easiest and hardest working dozers I've ever owned, just remember you have to put the right guy on them to be efficient and not destroy the dozer, its not a job for anyone but the right one.

      @richardmaurer9002 Před 3 lety +4

      Myles Lenover Wrong! More rollers mean longer roller frame, for medium flotation purposes, without sacrificing undercarriage warranty. If additional floatation is needed, you get wider with the pads. How ever, Cat knocks off a percentage of undercarriage warranty for each inch of width above the standard pad recommended by Cat. This is to protect Cat against idiots like those shown in the video who will, among other things, run up on rocks or stumps on the edge of a wide pad; for it is not the distance between the lower rollers that determines the rate of wear, but the leverage of a wide pad putting twisting forces on the chain, and forcing the rollers to support the tractor on one flange of the roller. Theoretically you are right, but the addition of one roller per side without lengthening the track frame will make a negligible impact on undercarriage life , and will not lower the PSI of the tractor 1lb. , while adding a foot or so to the roller frame will make the tractor “lighter “ considerably.

      Forgot more expensive to repair and have a much shorter lifespan because 15, 20, 30, 40, years from now the electronic parts like the ECM availability will be next to or completely non existent except perhaps from electronic repair shops that do one off work but even they are limited to component replacement of what they physically see is fried but cannot as far replace processors and the boards themselves because all of that is manufacture proprietary. That’s not such a big deal when millions of ECMs are built like with cars but with equipment like this the numbers of ECM’s are in the X or XX thousands so parts to use to fix parts is very limited and lastly nothing electronic lasts forever especially if used in harsh environments

    The JD wins in speed and getting up to power, but as we see at the end the Cat wins in sheer power, once it was dug in and got traction it started pushing the JD back and the cat looks too be smaller as well, although it is almost entirely forged steel compared to the "modern" component's of the JD, just wish it was longer so we could see undeniably proof of speed vs power

    • @8ZRD11R
      @8ZRD11R Před 11 měsíci

      I think the fact the Cat lifted his blade at the end adds to it a lot more. It would have increased his traction and broken the JD's. I think the JD is likely to have more "sheer power" than the D8H. When new the latest D8Hs ran 280hp I think from memory and the JD 950 is rated up around the 270-280 mark as well. Not much difference on paper but 50 year old machines normally don't perform as new.
      Traction, determined by factors like weight, foot print, extra downward pressure on the machine, soil type and condition plus the condition of the undercarriage is far more important than power. We have all operated a machine for ages with slick tracks and then again straight after fitting new ones. As you know, it feels like you have twice the power although obviously you don't, just better grip.
      I can't really tell from the video but to my eyes it looks a little bit like the Cat is slightly downhill too? What do you think? If it is that would have given the JD an advantage.

    Once the JD lifted things changed, the operator tried lifting the blade to drop it back down on the tracks but the cat still had it off the ground. There’s no way the blade on the JD could be used to lift the cat as high as the cat’s blade can lift the JD. Make em weigh the same with the same power weight ratio and if the cat can get under the JD’s blade the design of the cat would allow it to lift the JD higher and it would be all backward momentum then.

    I can't count how many John deere winch drums I've seen collapsed?? Dozens?. . . . definitely. Not good when your winching a cat 583 boom up a hill with a double joint of 30" .500w pipe and winch drum goes "crunch". Not to good.

    950 likely only outweighs cat by maybe 4000 lbs. splitting hairs run jd at trans speed equal to 1st gear of cat and take em to the scales add weight and new pads to cat. eh find a more reliable way to push one another, so much time here to waste for to change nobody’s mind.

    If he let that cat rip he would have shoved him backwards I'm sure this was put on by John deer the 8 never even let out a puff of smoke we all know when you turn that old girl lose she smokes as soon as I saw him under the blade of the 950 I'm you got this all day I once saw a D9 do this with a 375 Komatsu back in the 80s the cat took him for a ride with the same trick get on his heels and it's all over
