I’m glad you’re doing some advertising to support your channel. Thumbs up 👍 to Sam and Scrappy industries
And to you advancing the channel.😊
Apparently you make enough money through CZcams to buy all that old stuff and buildings, so why all that commercial shit?
40 years of logging experiences has taught me that dealing with daytime problems at night...turns into total disaster. Save it for the morning. There's a difference between scratching your ass and tearing it all to hell.
Nothing better on a Saturday Morning than another DC Video with Matt. (No more Saturday cartoons like in the good old days.)
Sunday morning here (1am) 😊
Saturday evening here
That's funny
Are you saying Matt is today's Elmer Fudd?
You beat me too this comment! I was thinking dam I feel like a little boy again watching cartoons! 😂 That’s it Matt. You are adult cartoons!
If you decide to completely restore this old lad, it's going to be a masterpiece of history. The D8 (even at it's age) makes the Komatsu look like a toy tractor.
🤦♂️Totally different class of machines.
Thanks for encouraging us to attend the show. My dad and I went for the first time and stayed open to close. I also really appreciate you taking the time to converse with your subscribers. Dad really wanted to shake your hand, and I think it was quite special that you allowed that to happen. You're a real one, Matt.
Glad you could make it!!
The D8 is a BEAST!
...so is your blues rock.
A new blade edge and and some TLC and she's a sexy beast!
@@klk2270 thank you very much!
Automatic thumbs up to the hardest working man on CZcams! Have a great weekend Matt👍
“Shut It Off And Start It Again”. It never gets old watching an old Monster like that start up.
Thanks for including us on this adventure.
You have come a long way from working in your basement shop. You do a great job of editing your videos. A lot of people don’t realize what is involved in producing what you do. Setting up shots, selecting clips, aligning the sequence, and culling the dead time out. But , still making it interesting. And you do it. Love your work 👍
It's Amazing that this old warrior just keeps on going. My hat's off to Matt for having the talent to fix that old hunk of USA iron!!
I had some serious adrenaline rush when seeing the D8 wanting to go downhill. Also good reminder never stand near cables, cause when they snap they can cut right trough you.
Anyone else immediately hit like as soon as the video starts playing?
A comment on your starting procedure. When the main engine fires off, immediately put it to idle and allow it to idle for at least 30 seconds preferably 1 minute before you rev it up to allow oil pressure to build and stabilize. You have a great friend in Sam! Take care of that guy and thanks for referring me to his channel. I really like his and yours. Love those old machines.
that intro song is still wholesome goodness.. GJ to the Semi-Supervillains
Try listening at 2x speed
Agree. They are on most music streaming services and on a couple of my play lists now.
Boy, that Caterpillar entrance sure.Sounds good running.Almost like it's a new engine
A little piece of history: I live in Michigan. When I was about 11 my uncle was providing sand for the construction upgrade of parts of the main thoroughfare from Lansing to Grayling. US 27 was undergoing the new "limited access" highway upgrading. My uncle had a 100 acre farm within about 1/2 mile of the projected new road so he assembled bull dozers and earth movers and started to excavate sand from his property. I believe it was the sand that they used to mix the concrete. After the new "Expressway" was completed past his farm he put rubber tires on one of his D-8's so he could pull a gondola from an earth mover up the new concrete road loaded with the clean sand to the next staging area. As the staging area got further away he changed the gear ratios inside that D-8 so it could travel faster. I was staying at the farm for a week during the summer of about 1961 or 1962 and went with my Aunt when she took my Uncle out to the area where he was excavating the sand. When we got there we were all surprised by one of the dozers parked in a small lake of very clear and clean standing water. Over night the place where he was removing sand had filled up with water. I came back later that day and swam in 2 1/2 feet of water. It was warm and clean and just beautiful. Just as clear as a swimming pool but with a sandy bottom. For the next 50 some years my Dad's entire family came out to that little lake for our yearly 4th of July family gettogether. Covid 19 was the end of the reunions. The lake is still there to this day. ben/ michigan
Glad it was just a fueling issue. My heart sank when I saw it run real ragged and then die after you spent all that money on the turbo rebuild. The Area Diesel Service video on that was AWESOME, by the way.
You need to get an exhaust stack on that thing. Inhaling unburnt hydrocarbons can't be good for you.. Love this channel.
In any disaster, it is a good idea to have someone who is fresh to the problem. It helps avoid putting a 45 into the block...
You need an exhaust pipe and hat on that beautiful beast and stop eating diesel fumes . CHEERS FROM AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 👍
In a throw away world we are living in, it’s nice to see these you breathing life back into these old pieces of iron. Continued success
The music at the start is food for the soul.
Nothing like having a great friend like Sam! Love both of your channels. Glad you fixed the fuel problem, and that old kitty is a butt kicker😊
SAM IS THE BEST
Its always good to see a young person able to work on this old technology..
Reminds me of some Australian guys who were building WWI airplanes from the original plans... Seemed funny when one of them said " we can't ask any of the pilots how to fly them, their all gone....
8:23 when the winch snapped, it startled me.
Never gets old watching these old beasts come to life and do what they were made for. Always makes me smile to see them start up and roar to life.
During the intro I see a stack of logs. Are you planning on getting or building a bandsaw mill?
Great outcome, I have a rule that if I am tired and stressed and a job is going wrong then its time to secure the job and wait till morning. So glad to see you do the same. Thanks for another great video.
My question is …. WHY aren’t you over one million subscribers? You create great content. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Great channel but he shouldn't be advertising those scamming games.
@@martymartin2894there's not a free to play game out there worth a damn at all without some kind of micro transaction that I've ever found.....
In Vietnam, we used the same Cat to build Air Force bases from the ground up. A C-130 could cary 1 Cat + all the attachments. We would air drop them from 10', there were parachutes, and they were to slow the Cat's down and slow their descent. These were work horses that rarely let us down.
At 13:25 after messing around with winching it at night, breaking cables, slamming a tree, and then tinkering on a fuel line, the 'ole D8 was like "Oh, you want me up the hill? I mean, I can do that. Here?! That what you want? I got it. Okay. Here I go. No problem, right? Yeah. Done! Here I am!"
Old equipment never wants to die.
They were designed and made to perform.
Am glad that tree caught the dozer. I could imagine it rolling down the hill. It's good to see it running and working again.
Matt its great that your friend Sam came to the rescue HE'S An ACE mechanic love his channel too you are blessed to have a friend like him hope by the end of the video that she is running like it did right after the TURBO Install!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
This will help me get through night shift thank you Matt hello from Australia
Funny how older machines as long as look after them just keep going. While new stuff brakes down every month.
Diesel Creek is never boring!
That little Scrappy fella sure is a good friend. Glad you got’r back Matt. Cheers🎉
That rebuilt turbo makes that old monster sound really healthy.
My uncle ran heavy equiptment his entire life , he ended up with a collapsed lung when he was in his early 50's. He passed at 58 years of age. I'm reasonably sure it was from breathing smoke from the engines he was running, you may want to consider putting a stack on your exhaust.
God Matt, I could just lay down and close my eyes and just listen to that D8 working in the distance with that turbo whine.
I have not driven a Dozer but spent time, years, cultivating with steel tracks. I was told you do far more damage with slack tracks than tight ones. Your D8 has more power than grip. If you don't edit out some of your scary bits, they will be classed as horror movies. Brilliant and told as it happened, thank you
Man! Had it not been for that tree, no doubt your next video would have been "The Saga of Diesel Creek V2.0." Nice job on the at least temporary fix for the fuel pressure. That D8 is truly a beast. Maybe someone can donate a new wear edge for the blade.
Ya how matt extracts d8 out of diesel creek
I definitely notice the cutting edge
@@jaygraham5407the gap in the cutting edge kind of reminds me of Alfred E. Newman.
OMG! Careful the Champ! We don't won't to be reading your obituary in the local newspaper any time soon! LOL!
My Dad worked rode construction in the late 40's and early 50's. He always said the cable dozers could do a much finer grade than the hydralic dozers because you had better control with a cable. Don't know if it's true but let us know if thats your opinion. 👍
Wire on the outside of the lower pulley guard
"I don't see why the Discovery channel needs to fake all the drama..." I agree. It's one of the key reasons I watch your channel and not those shows. When drama does happen on yours, it's real and relatable.
I#d prefer Diesel Creek and Camarata Shenanigans every time over Orange county choppers and stuff. .. But "The Brits "Wheeler Dealers" I really loved! Luckily I can watch (the old ones) here on YT. (Not a fan of the new Format though, and without the Master Wrencher Ed China it aint the same anyways)
It was nice meeting you and talking to you today at the steam show Matt. I was the young feller driving around with my dad in that brown CJ5. I’m 17 I also collect wheel horse tractors and you were the one that kinda inspired me to start collecting and fixing antique tractors a couple years ago. Love your videos man I look forward to them every Sunday
Hey Joe, its Dom haha
Hey bud! Super glad to hear that! Keep doing what you’re doing!!
Matt, the reduction through the blade shives is 8:1! To raise the blade 1" you have to shorten the cable 8".
Me too, Matt !! Keep 'em coming ol' Buddy !!
I remember my dad telling me years ago back in the 60s that a local guy would use a D9 to plow snow on the local roads in big storms over the winter. Back then the township didn't have the equipment big enough to move the heavy snow. He'd tell me that one push down the road would open both lanes. I'd have love to have seen it!
Out of Jamaica 🇯🇲 just now watching the rebuilding of the turbo by area diesel services, those guys are awesome experts they are great to look at in action
Keep doing your best it is a experience week after week Matt I am so grateful for the knowledge you share with us,keep up the amazing work you are doing
Awesome.
Couldn't have put it better myself, mate.
I will be in Falmouth, Jamaica December 1st, coming in on a cruise ship. Any suggestions on what I can do I use a Powered wheelchair.
@@keithjenkins109 Best to coordinate with the cruise line beforehand.
You have got yourself a fantastic, powerful dozer. She is really nimble for her age and deserves a lot of TLC. Thank you for posting, much appreciated from the UK.
when the D8 died , that was defo a Ruh Rho moment .. glad Matt got it back on flat ground
Looks like the engine is running better after doing some work.
That is so cool to see that vintage tractor running and working after all those years.
Another fantastic video, thanks for taking the extra time to record, edit and upload these to share your journey. Glad to see the D8 pushing well after the cliffhanger (ridge-hanger) at the end of the last episode.
Use a cutting torch to melt the end of the cable. Was taught this hack over 40 years ago. Works great!!!
That old girl is a beauty , congrats on saving it
That tiny tree saved the day 🤣🤣
I love that new turbo sound 👌
I''m glad you explained that cable clamp termination/use. I was about to tell Chris (LetsDig18) that his dragline cable was wrong because it just had the clamp on the loose tail but you clarified that.
The difference between terminating to a clamp or a thimble.
Boy that ole D 8 is An Animal ! man good to see it hard at work !!!
I had to put my fingers in my ears and repeat MMMNNNMMM MMMNNNMMM when you spoke about Gold Rush - Don't spoil it Matt, I love that show!....and yours of course
This would have been an ideal time to use Christine, the grader . It would have been nice to see her in action again after you'd pulled up the top soil. Really enjoy these videos and appreciate the time spent on making. We don't have anything like this in Scotland
Got my coffee, my cat and Matt! great way to start a Saturday!
Hey, same!
Great video Matt it was good to meet you at the show
Nice to the old girl with a shiny blade once again. I’m sure when you take her to The Steam Show there will be a few old timers there just chomping at the bit to help you get her running right as rain.
Oh BOY! I thought sure there was going to be a future recovery video when the cable broke off from the D8 Dozer but good ole nature saved the day again, this time we can thank a Tree, Thanks Tree! for all you do. 😀
wow... first ten minutes of this video has me holding my breath and sitting on the edge of my seat!!
10mins in this is your best video yet Matt. What you would give for an extra pair of hands!!
A little fresh grease wouldn't hurt Matt😂😂
Grew up with draglines& D9&D8 cable operated.Ifeel your pain.Great to see doing things i cant anymore.
Hang in there, son!
Your video introduction really puts the size of your new garage in perspective when you compare it to the shed you built with the shipping containers. Fantastic space. No more working on the ground. Plenty of room. Out of the weather. I can see why you're always smiling now!
Love the sound of that new Turbo spooling up!
My grandpa used to use these machines building roads in Saskatchewan. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching you getting these machines going again and help me imagine what my grandpa had to go through building roads in the middle of nowhere. Thank you.
Gotta get yourself a big ole snatch block for your Komatsu in case you get that D8 stuck again ! Less strain on the Komatsu and a slower pull with more power !
Glad to see the old girl back in action...now to get that blade fixed up !
That monster runs beautifully. What a cool dozer.
Added the fishing app - Thanks Matt- phew sure thought for a minute the d8 was sliding off the hill.
What a beauty she is and appreciate that you take us along as you fix her.
It’s been a while since I had a mechanical project and every time I watch one of your video’s makes me want to get my hands dirty again. Thanks again for continuing to be a regular guy -
Matt you are now truly a Cat Skinner with your cable 8 operator ability. Perfect grade is not easy by cable system.
Wow! you had the turbo rebuilt and were so proud of it, then in your last shot your hauling the old girl down the road without any cover on the exhaust, spinning that new/rebuilt turbo with no oil going to bearings. One of the first things I learned as a young buck mechanic working on Cat tractors, is when you hall a machine with a turbocharger was to close up the exhaust stack. Here's hoping you don't lose another bearing.
She looks happy pushing dirt again. Have you given her a name? Awesome to see her work. Like a fine wine. You handle it like you have been running her for years. It will be nice to see her restored. Thank you for what you do Matt. Cheers.
He's already got a machine named Christine, so seems to me there is only one logical name for a dozer, sure it was a D9 in the movie, but Wikipedia says it was a D7 in the novel, so D8 splits the difference.
@@jaytalbot1146 what movie are you talking about
@@tncountryboy06Christine. A car movie. Good one.
@@bgood2010 Christine was a car in a 1983 movie, a 1958 Plymouth Fury roughly the same vintage as the grader.
But I was writing about another movie, Wikipedia says:
"Killdozer! is a 1974 made for TV science-fiction horror movie, adapted from a 1944 novella of the same name by Theodore Sturgeon"
"the bulldozer (a Caterpillar D9 in the movie, a Caterpillar D7 in the novella)" (so a D8 splits the difference)
Of course there was also a bulldozer in the Christine move, but less said about that the better.
@@jaytalbot1146 In Christine it was a septic tank truck named Petunia that smashed her up, not a dozer at all.
I love it when things go sideways you don’t complain you just get it sorted. Nothings ever to big of a deal. As always great content. This machine is a beast I really cannot wait to see what you end up doing with this beauty!
Damn when the little one dug in on that stump I got so hyped. My tractor is small but it is mighty.
You have a sweet running CAT. As soon as you get all the gremlins worked out of it, the ole kitty will still give you years of fun and run, all you have to do find a sand box big enough to play in😊, and maybe even find yourself a paying job somewhere to show the world old doesn’t mean useless. Thanks for the update young man.
That old timer can push yards! Very impressive!
Little Komatsu did the best it could. We should be proud.
We see it but I can smell it too. Too many years on sites to forget that mix of fresh dirt and diesel fumes. Love it.
Will you be showing us how the track tensioner works?
Thats a really big job to repair the tensioner on this old iron. Breaking the track means pressing out a pin to separate the rail. Clint over at C&C just did a tensioner and the pin press they used is a monster and it had its work cut out to get the pin out out a track that was in better shape than these. It will be interesting to see Matt take a run at getting them apart and replacing the seals.
Nice video, thanks! Nothing sounds better than an older slow turning Caterpillar working.
Yes on Goldrush! Same with Weather Channel's Highway Trough Hell. Hyped up. Lovin' the D8!
I just happen upon you video . In my early years my Father owned a strip mining company back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I spent many of day's riding on the the D8 with him. He would start the pony engine let it warm up then my job was to engage the leaver to start the main motor . If you was sitting in the operators seat the area to the right he had a wooden wire spool that was what I sat on . I miss my dad and your video brought back so many memories, Thank you !
good to see the old kitty back at work :) Actually surprised how clean she runs - they did a really good job on that turbo.
I love the sound that the tracks make as it passes over the sprockets. As a lover of tanks and over tracked machinery. I think it's just really cool. But I also remember Matt saying that the track was a bit loose, so that might not be good. In any case, great video Matt! It kept me on the edge of my seat a bit there! Also that turbo sounds beautiful along with that engine :D
It's funny, Matt, in the last video when you were pushing that brush pile at first I thought to myself that D8 really should not be struggling that much to push that pile. I realize it's a hefty pile of brush, but man.. that thing should be a beast with pushing power that is what it's made to do. I hope it's something easy for you to take care of, 3 minutes in and ready for a fun filled 40 more! Thanks man for all the hard work you share with us!
edit: that is a pretty darn bright headlamp!!
That thing plopping the blade down has to be one of the most satisfying things to hear,
This great old machinery was engineered with slide rules…no computers, calculators, CAD drawings…etc. AND it’s still running 👍🏼 and running strong.
I realize your current D8 exhaust system provides a great visual engine performance indicator, but a short stack could increase the operator comfort. I have found an appropriately sized truck drive shaft makes a durable exhaust stack. The only downside side is that it needs to be supported at the top to prevent breaking the exhaust elbow on the whistle. Keep up the good work Matt!!!
Yeah, I'm concerned Matt isn't looking after his hearing too well & will pay for this in later years (I have a degree of tinnitus & hearing loss from a mixture of running chainsaws, racing motorcycles & shooting - this despite using hearing protection in all cases).
It is not only his hearing i'm concerned about. Constant Inhalation of exhaust fumes is very bad for your well being. Your lungs get filled with a million nano particles that go deep in and payback over time. i'm certain he is feeling pretty nasty after shoveling that dirt layer.
@@recolaq Yeah, I've mentioned him not having exhaust evacuation in the shop & it's already starting to look stained with black diesel particulate - can't be doing his lungs any good at all.
I messed up my lungs for more than a year by wearing inadequate dust protection when clearing 150 years of grime from the roof space in my house. Still not 100% five years on.
It’s in the works.
@@GARDENER42Check his ears and you will see noise suppression devices.
You're right. Usually, nothing gets better trying to work through the night.

Nice to see her come back to life.
Matt's proven that one can never have too many dozers 😊
Side note: just realized that the opening song is somewhat reminiscent of 'Can't you see' by The Marshall Tucker Band.
Thanks for a great vid!
Well, that was fun! Thanks for the extra time and effort on this video. I'm sure most of us can now read you with a piece of equipment. You are "all in" on this old dozer!
