Her easy high notes voice is remarkable. She usually sustains the high C longer than any other soprano in every case that she has to sing this note. Her pianissimi are so ravishing. Greetings,

Both women are amazing singers and whether or not you like one or the other, just enjoy the music. if you don't enjoy one person interpretation of it, don't watch it and take your negativity and ignorance somewhere else please!

Five years is enough time for significant vocal and artistic achievements in the career of a singer, both up and down. It's fascinating to observe the difference between this performance and the "Voice of Firestone" performance of 1963. In 1958, Price was making her European debuts in Aida, having just debuted the role in San Francisco in 1957. We can see how dramatically vital she is in the role as well as hear the earnest work of an exceptional new star. But the 1963 performance is next level. The dramatic element has been all but eliminated to showcase an overwhelming vocal achievement. The beauty, fullness, dynamic control, phrasing...everything about the vocal performance tarries on a level that you would have to go backwards to singers of another time to match. The five years between the two performances really show Price's graduation from up and coming star to full-fledged prima donna. And to think that she would continue to be able to sing this aria at this level until 1985.

It was obviously natural ability mixed with solid technique. I've actually never heard anyone do it quite as beautifully. I've just come back from a performance from the Met where the singer omitted that note and just repeated the B flat. I don't know if she was sick or what, but it angered me so much. Cuz the rest of the performance she was great. They tend to like to cast black sopranos in this role now but none of them can do the pianissimo on top like that..I've listened to all of them. We were spoiled with the musicality, beauty and EVERYTHING that Price gives in this.

I love this role because this was when her career really started to jump off, 6 years before her Met Debut she wasn't singing this role in big houses yet, but she was great in the small studio. Then the 1959-60 recordings, than the '61 Met debut, then a decade of amazing recodings/opera performances in her absolute prime. Oh Leontye, I kind of worship you.
