Nami has always had such a strong connection with the other women we meet throughout the story, and I love how they’ve incorporated that here with Kaya.

Man, the fact Usopp calls Luffy his other-other best friend really goes to show just how lonely and alone he is. It's pretty sad if you think about it - he literally latched onto Luffy so hard just because he paid attention to him. Oh lord, I'm gonna tear up if I keep thinking down those lines.
Also, I really like Sham and Buchi in this. Their characters have great chemistry. Sham, especially, I never liked in the anime but in this? Love her. Sassy bitch that she is. Also, the whole Nami/Kaya dynamic is so good. Nami just collecting a group of girl friends since she never had the chance to have that experience as a kid is so wholesome. And Kaya is a queen. Ugh, Syrup village in the anime is great but has a lot of ehhh to it, but I love the live action version. It's very different but a lot of fun.
This is something I love about this adaption: seeing Koby and Helmeppo together throughout this whole first season. We didn't really get much of them prior to their glow ups later on in the manga. So, seeing them gradually warm up to each other, as well as Garp becoming more of a mentor towards Koby, is a very welcome edition.
That first sail of Merry with "We Are" playing at the background score is so perfect!
Honestly they made Usopp’s design so cool in the live action I love it

They really killed off the only person Kaya had left who could watch over her. Merry wasn’t even a butler in this, he was her lawyer. She’s beyond alone now 😭
While that’s true it also gives strength to Kaya that now she’s strong and independent now to look after herself
I mean, if they do more seasons and ever revisit her for a few reaction shots, like her receiving the first/second etc. bounty posters for the Strawhats, they could just make him alive again and he randomly mentions that the was left down there for way too long until he got rescued xD

The whole Kuro hunting Kaya scenes give me 'Ready Or Not' vibes, it's like they made this episode a horror-thriller movie
This show was surprisingly good finished the show yesterday and I have to say despite minor nit picks it was really good I’m happy to say Netflix finally broke the curse, I just hope season 2 will still have oda involved in the story bc if he doesn’t it will cause issues for the show moving forward.

I love that they've already built the story assuming there will be future seasons - mentioning Baroque Works, putting references to future pirates that will be met, etc. It's smart of them.
IMO it’s the actor villains who really carry the whole show, they really portrayed the villain characters very well, they’re all amazing

He's still active. He is/was above Sengoku. Sengoku talked to him when he stepped down from Fleet Admiral and told him to take the a less important role like Garp did.

That's what I want from the Live Action, something different, idk why some people really want it to be fully the same, The Kuro horror vibes was amazing and really better it feels like horror movies.

33:19 FYI, Kong is the World Government Commander-in-Chief, and Fleet Admiral before Sengoku. He appears after the end of Summit War Saga, where both Kong and Sengoku are discussing about the next Fleet Admiral.
The Garp/Koby storyline was something that the showrunner added. Oda was against it at first but they managed to convince him otherwise.
I feel like the inclusion of the golden-goose spoiler (Garp) is for intrigue for the series & as a fail-safe in case this doesn't end up taking off from here - just like how the Scott Pilgrim movie maybe could have been two movies, but went with one in the end (and it didn't do well in theaters at all)

Ngl, this live action adaptation has really got me back in the mood to watch one piece.
I stopped watching not long after the timeskip, and just never really felt any inclination to return.
I think i might've just start from the beginning again and see if i can get further this time...
any chance they're trying up the importance with the luffy/coby and roger/garp parallel with this adaptation? the direct interactions are happening more and the tension seems to be building.
In my mind, I feel like they're doing that as a fail safe of intrigue in case the series doesn't take off from here.....

I don't know offhand whether Oda knew all along that Garp was going to be Luffy's grandpa, but for reference, at this point in the manga Garp hadn't even shown up yet. Once he *did* show up, it was like 7 irl years of manga before the reveal. One of the biggest advantages that this show has, is that they have access to all 25-26 years of story right off the bat, and can choose to foreshadow and pace things accordingly.
Honestly? I've tried to get into One Piece a handful of times and my ADHD just couldnt do it, but for some reason the live action is really clicking for me. I think its the casting all the actors are so charming I cant help but connect with every character so quickly. The pacing helps with my adhd too. Makes me want to try the anime again 👍🏻

I would say, Mackenyu's sword play is really good maybe because of training extensively on his past roles like Rurouni Kenshin which is if you watch it, you will in awe on their sword fights

I think they include the fact taht Kuro caused his own problems himself really well without shoving it in our face; the things he hates most about assisting Kaya; her isolation and helplessness are thing he caused with her illness. A crew that he cannot trust? Well, it's pretty obvious that he controls his crew members with fear. By being the strongest and most ruthless. That means that to become captian, you'd just have to be _stronger_ and _more ruthless._ And you'd prove that? By killing Kuro. Either that or they just were so afraid and tired of his abuse that they lashed out.
Point is, Luffy would never have these issues in the first place.

I've honestly been really enjoying the series! I think one of my favorite moments of the episode was the instrumental of We Are playing right after they get the Going Merry, sailing for the first time.
I'm hoping this does well enough to get a second season. I would love to see the Alabasta arc adapted
Yeah, i think this show was great and better than I expected so i truly hope for a second season because once they get to the grandline, the story gets better and the world get bigger. This show did its best as a prologue but man seeing alabasta would be a treat. I mean with that cliffhanger at the end of the last episode made me scream and it would be a crime if they didn’t do a second season 😂
I'm thinking the reason they revealed Garp's and Luffy's relationship is because they know they won't get to post Ennies Lobby for the live action

When you really think about, it makes sense for Garp to care about his grandson enough to try to stop him from getting a bounty, AND it develops Koby and Helmeppos training arc.
Seeing how they're not afraid to kill off characters, if we ever reach the Arabasta arc that means Pell might actually stay dead.
I'm SO CLOSE to the final episode (halfway through episode 7) the kuro fight was much better in this than the manga/anime imo

I heard that this was supposed to be a 10 episodes show, but they had to cut it to 8 episodes so i think there are stuff being cut and others feels fast paced so if that’s true i think i can forgive them when it comes to pacing and cutting stuff. But it’s still a good adaptation imo despite the interesting cuts and changes.
I love that Garp has a completely different accent from Luffy showing how much he neglected him growing up~

It is kinda funny the more you think about if someone watches the Anime and is not at the moment were Luffy meets Garp in the Anime then he gets completely spoiled by the Live Action :D
But its not a bad spoiler as it does not ruin the story at all. It just takes the surprise to another point in the story. The surprise in the Anime is then gone but the surprise itself was not ruined.
One thing I wish had been done differently: put zoro's flashback during his fight with Mihawk.
Another thing: give Ussop a slightly bigger role in the arc.

Besides getting lost from the well (in the mansion's literal back yard) to the mansion, ending up by Luffy who was escorted from the front of the mansion far along the path by then; Zoro also got lost in the mansion… he and Luffy split up at the very front of the mansion, we then see Zoro wandering around for a while just to end up, literally right back where he started at the front entrance to the mansion, where he ended up fighting the meowban (brothers) {siblings?}…
You guys missed the easter egg of the song 'We Are' instrumental when they launched the Merry, it was such a beautiful homage using that song.
5:31 As somebody who practiced Kendo for a few years, and who has three other practitioners in the family...while they're wearing the bogu, they're not actually practicing Kendo. It's not a fighting system, or even really a martial art. It's a sport, more like modern fencing. Landing points on your opponent mostly involves striking with the proper part of the blade, kiai timing and accuracy, and footwork / technique. If any of those steps are wrong, you won't score a point.
For example, if your strike didn't have the proper fumikomi (foot stomp), or you stomped too soon or too late, even if you landed the blow you'd receive zero points. Your kiai (shout) also needs to call your target area. For example, if you go to strike the opponent's wrist guard (kote), but your opponent moves and the strike hits their head (men), you won't score.
Imo the naming of Going Merry in LA is much more meaningful than in the anime

To help put into perspective how popular One Piece is in Japan, I myself live in Kumamoto, the city Oda is from. We literally have golden, life-size statues of all of the Strawhat crew that people make pilgrimages to. Like... EVERYONE knows One Piece. It's bonkers popular here.

this might be a hot take, but it always felt wrong to me that Oda left some characters alive in the manga when they're supposed to be dead due to a fatal wound, like Merry for example
considering things have to go through oda for approval, i think we can fairly assume oda too might've thought he should've just written off merry to make kuro more of a bigger threat before his fight with Luffy
Makes sense that this has more of the violence like in the manga, since its an adaptation of the manga and not the anime. Also as for the sandals. theyre not allowed on netflix sets due to safety regulations etc
33:16 Kong is the World Government Commander-in-Chief. He was the previous Fleet Admiral of the Marines at the time of the Battle in Edd War twenty-seven years ago. Some time after Gol D. Roger's execution twenty-four years ago, he was promoted while Sengoku succeeded him as Fleet Admiral.
Tbh all of Zoro's fighting scenes are SO good throughout the series. Looks neat and clean.
