A fight that truly showed what being a Ninja is- Using your head and putting your enemy in a position where the final blow is guaranteed. From the start Shikamaru had one plan- Establish a false limit his opponent thought he had combined with a lazy attitude, and make them panic with a few tricks all in order to position them for the final blow to be dealt. Just as the InoShikaCho combo is intended. Temari might have otherwise been aware of the hole, but because of how many times Shikamaru made her panic and need to reposition, she forgot as the need to "survive" (Yes it's a match where death is most likely going to be stopped) got the best of her. Putting her right in where Shikamaru wanted. The best part? The man doesn't even claim the win. Not because the others might beat him, but because he knew that those watching would see that he's what they need- Not just a strong Ninja, a SMART Ninja.
Basically everything shikamaru did showed how great Naruto can be. Virtually everything he did was replicated by other ninjas even at the very end of the series. Even obito used that kunai kite thing in his penultimate battle. The idea that he's a genius cannot be understated. His writing was genius and it played through the entire series.

He would've still lose... There's no way Shikamaru can make Temari talk to give up and he can't beat her in a single battle (with the restrictions of the arena, that is). It was just for show and to make it drag longer. But yeah, I believe it should be forbidden to warn someone during an official duel...

You can do it with you fingers too, and not only with distances ( natural light time left before the sun goes down etc ). Temari had arguably the most badass second showing (during the retrieval arc). Yeah puppet style is always cool, and Gaara is always fun and creating a mini desert is awesome. But Temari and her little weasel straight up destroyed an entire giant forest. But then after that... nothing.
After Shipuden, that anime became basicaly a Dragon Ball, with people throwing shiny balls and powers into each other, completely ignoring the "ninja" thing that anime had. But Shikamaru, this man is the last genuine in that anime XD (And yeah of course, i forgot Tenten)

I think what really earned him is Chunin rank was that he conceded. He knew that despite all his careful planning, he couldn't fight Temari on low chakra. A leader must know when to strategically retreat, especially when you're leading a squad.

I like how this fight was never fully one sided. Shikamaru did have to plan and adapt to Tamari, and her wind attacks could have hurt him if he didn't keep up a proper cover. No, killing your opponent won't land you Chunin status, hence why Shikamaru didn't bother to make Temari surrender or kill her. When Temari got captured under Shikamaru Shadow Possession Jutsu, Shikamaru know that he is now a qualified Chunin. The Chunin exam rules are kinda weird, I know, but it is what it is.

@Alvi Syahri he is from Uchiha clan. For a genjutsu user that would be enough to know that you don stand a chance, cause sharigan is OP against genjutsu. Kurenai is from Konoha and a high skilled genjutsu user she must know that.

I think what really earned him is Chunin rank was that he conceded. He knew that despite all his careful planning, he couldn't fight Temari on low chakra. A leader must know when to strategically retreat, especially when you're leading a squad.

I like how this fight was never fully one sided. Shikamaru did have to plan and adapt to Tamari, and her wind attacks could have hurt him if he didn't keep up a proper cover. And when he could not find a proper way to defeat her without wasting a lot of chakra, he ended the fight.
Honestly I think they both came away with a lot of respect for one another.
No, killing your opponent won't land you Chunin status, hence why Shikamaru didn't bother to make Temari surrender or kill her.
When Temari got captured under Shikamaru Shadow Possession Jutsu, Shikamaru know that he is now a qualified Chunin.
The Chunin exam rules are kinda weird, I know, but it is what it is.

What does killing have to do with it? He couldn't really do either by the end and it was easier to surrender. Especially since his next opponents would be OP and he probably couldn't deal with them.

Also you're allowed to just knock your opponent unconscious to get a win. That's how Neji almost got a win when the referee thought he knocked out Naruto before he did his tunnel attack.

The shadow binding jutsu is such a underrated beauty.
Back when strategies are planned into the next level. Shikamaru planned 1000 steps on how to claim the older sister of the Kazekage, automatically making his son a heir of Suna and made him the brother in law of Kazekage. This is what I call pure strategy.

He gave up because it demonstrated awareness of his limits, he'd already achieved all of his other goals, and it allowed Temari to save face.
Still to this day this is one of my favourite fights.
Love how Temari would have lost even faster without her brother shouting out to her. Honestly that is cheating, not Temaris fault, but her brother should get penalized for interfering with the fight.
